You said back pocket. He was a offensive defender that moved out of the midfield.

Back Pockets can’t be offensive?

Hmm…?

Chris Johnson, Wirrpanda, Enright, Johncock, Peckett.

Ben looks at home in the back pocket

We have running backs
Sinclair and Hill

We have 1 KPD Howard
We have 2 Medium Defenders Wilkie and Highmore

We don’t have a second Key Defender

Hill should never have been positioned in the backline. He couldn’t get a kick so instead of admitting that our recruiting policy was wrong and our target was not as beneficial to the team as they’d hoped, they moved him so he could get a kick. He was shifted to the backline to save face for the list manager, the COO and the club in general.

The reason we got him was so he could deliver inside 50. He hasn’t done that. As a defender, Hill misses tackles. He can’t defend and he coughs it up under pressure just as much as the other so called less skilful players. His turnovers in D50 are horrid

If anything, Ben Paton and Jimmy should both stay in defence and Hill should play on the wing.

If Webster was injury free last year would Paton have gotten a game?

Another big night defensively. Can’t think of a team he wouldn’t get a game at.

Jimmy very good again tonight. Defended well and drove us into attack on several occasions.

? = Starting line up, defense: current thinking, all fit, maybe:
HBL: Highmore, Battle, Sinclair,
FBL: Wilkie, Howard, Paton

So possibly Jimmy W starting on the bench; Hill on a wing, SInclair and Paton's side of ground....

? ? I think its a selectors dilemma, or is that conundrum.

(Be interesting who is and isn't put in cotton wool v Essendon: we seem to be keeping our cards close to chest, Mar. 18 starting 22 wise.)

I don’t think Webster is under any pressure to retain his place in the team.

All credit to Paton for his preseason and fight back from a very nasty injury.

I think Paton eventually plays up the field and is much more versatile than Jimmy.

In form both are easily best 22.

Backs will be interesting this year.

If Battle plays lock down tall defender along with Wilkie are they planning to use Howard as the zone off intercept marker? He naturally zones off at any case and Highmore is also competent at intercepting.

Paton played most of his junior years as a mid/forward.
He did not turn to defence until invited back to the TAC competition (for his over age year) where he played as a running half back.

How good is it we have pressure for spots again!?
With new recruits looking good already and emerging players like Byrnes, Bytel, Sharman and Connelly we won't have players getting games on reputation alone. This is the quickest way a team improves is when players know they're not going to just be gifted games as no one to take their place ,even when form didnt warrant them getting one. Wasnt that long ago players like Weller were running around like headless chooks but we had no one to replace them. Exciting times!!

Jimmy is a very under rated defender, who never shirks a contest and works his backside off for the team. Paton probably provides more attacking run, but I would have Jimmy in defence ahead of Hill. With Paton back he provides more of a balanced defender, so for me Hill he needs to go back playing on a wing.

That’s savage! But I love it!

I totally disagree, but brutal is the way.
And I don’t mind Shane savage! Who can forget that sneaky deft lil’ wee hand pass from a set free for a pumping goal in ‘that’ final.

Highmore best
Then Paton Hill
Then Webby
IMO
And Battle not good enough for CHB imo.,

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Pretty much nailed it in a few paragraphs.
'Saving face' is spot on.
Ratts blamed the rest of the team for Hill's underperforming, saying 'we need to look for him, give him the ball more often'.
This is disgraceful, setting one guy apart from the rest of the squad. It's the worst thing a coach can do, flagging one guy as being 'special'.

It also gives 17 teams great ammo for sledging- imagine a Pie or Cat manning the mark, telling a Saint to pass it to the Golden Child, or the Messiah...also each time Hill gets a touch, an oppo player can yell 'ka-ching'
So many ways to sledge our guys about Hill.

And lots of 40-50 yr members want answers about WTH we are doing with Hill, was he worth all the money, etc.

Makes me angry that the club thinks he deserves special treatment. I despise Hill but I despise the club more, for throwing good money at him.

Hill got a free pass from the moment he was handed the jumper.
He gets games when he needs to get dropped.
'We're not dropping Hill' said Ratts, channelling his inner Richo. Disgraceful, Ratts

Bump

Jimmy saved the day with a beautiful lunge and tackle on the little cheat Colyer which is why I thought I’d revisit this thread

If Colyer got free and Freo scored they would have been within a goal with less than a couple of minutes left

PLUS …Jimmy and Ben Paton complement each other in the backline…both actually defend too!
