Who should have gone 1?

Post: # 1658561Post BigMart »

When did the draft get real serious? It became seen as the only way to building a better list... not just adding a few guys onto your team

97 I reckon is when it started to really become a big thing...

Travis Johnson was #1

Was he the best player from the draft - no... a handy to good player, in his draft year was a standout... nicknamed Roller (Rolls Royce) but had heaps of ?s with attitude... as Did the 98 pick, so they scrutinised that... then came athletic traits

But how prized is the #1 pick? How many become champions vs good players vs duds... how many were even close to the best player of that draft

Also interesting is that the 2001 super draft would have 10 or more players better than most of the number #1 picks

Imo N.Riewoldt is the best ever #1 pick... how would they be ranked??

98-D.Headland
99-JFraser
00-N.Riewoldt
01-L.Hodge
02-B.Goddard
03-A.Cooney
04-B.Deledio
05-M.Murphy
06-B.Gibbs
07-M.Kruzer
08-J.Watts
09-Scully
10-Swallow
11-Patton
12-Boyd
13-Whitfield

Too early to tell yet
14-McCartin
15-Weitering
16-McGrath

Imo
There are two champions the Elite of the comp - Riewoldt, Hodge
There are two Gun players best players in their teams, excellent AFL players - Goddard, Cooney
Very good players - Deledio, Murphy (i), Gibbs, Swallow (i)
Good players in their position, good performers - Headland, Boyd, Scully, Whitfield, Patton
Good Ordinary, handy players - Watts, Fraser

Boyd was 2013, and Whitfield was 2012

Would you put Kreuzer in the last category as well?

"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

I would prefer Watts over Swallow.

No real legends after the early 2000s, list isn't as impressive as one would think.

You'd have to chuck in the mini draft aswell for accuracy

I think you're right to say that most of those numero unos on that list wouldn't be the best players from those drafts. Just goes to show.

Almost reads like you're better off with pick 2, the team with pick 1 almost always picks a quality spud, the team with pick #2 gets the chance to pick the cream. Enjoy.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Absolutely
The mini draft took two guys per year out before they even faced the 2012 & 2013 drafts and don't forget that 12 guys were taken out of their pool by Gold Coast before the 2010 draft and 10 by GWS before the 2011 draft.
Then the 2009 draft had the available age pool reduced by one third.
2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2013 drafts were all demetrioued.

Hawkins & Ablett (jnr) were father/sons in that period.

If memory serves me correct, Hawkins would have been a No.1 if not taken under father/son. He in hindsight would have been a worthy No.1. Don't remember how highly Ablett (jnr) was rated.

2004 When Richmond did what many on here would have preferred us to do (McCartin v Petracca). They overlooked 2 young Key Forwards (Franklin & Roughead) in favor of a so called midfield jet (Deledio). My didn't that work out for them.

That's simply not true about the pre listed 17yos or the mini drafts

The drafts were nowhere near a third weakened. Possibly each round of the draft weakened by few spots?

They did have access to a few 17yo players (whom they nominated and other teams could trade for) Jack Martin, Jesse Hogan, Brad Crouch....etc... Then they were able to offer turning 17yo kids a chance to go there as a 17yo, with an assured spot on their list the following year

Mav Weller for example took this opportunity. Others chose to not go as they knew they would be drafted the following year after year 12 and didn't want to move. Tom Scully is an example of this, as an u16 he was clearly a huge prospect and was always going to go very high... so he chose to go into the normal draft.
