Last quarter fade outs

Post: # 1353811Post White Winmar »

OTC showed a ladder based on last quarter "wins". PA were first with 11 wins and 2 losses. We were 17th with 2 wins and 11 losses. Even Melbourne is ahead of us on this score. Fitness and conditioning staff, please explain. That is an abysmal and unacceptable record.

Yea good point,
Some really poor coaching going on there at the minute.
That's more than obvious ...
Maybe a low altitude training might hit the spot...WTF....

Let's break it down

Rd 1 - Gold Coast - 3.3 to 7.1 - Lost by 21pts - Lost Game
Rd 2 - Richmond - 1.3 to 2.3 - Lost by 6pts - Lost Game
Rd 3 - GWS - 6.2 to 2.5 - Won by 21pts - Won Game
Rd 4 - Essendon - 4.4 to 4.6 - Lost by 2pts - Lost Game
Rd 5 - Sydney - 3.3 to 2.0 - Won by 9pts - Lost Game
Rd 6 - Collingwood - 3.2 to 5.3 - Lost by 13pts - Lost Game
Rd 7 - Carlton - 1.3 to 5.3 - Lost by 30pts - Won Game
Rd 8 - Adelaide - 1.4 to 3.3 - Lost by 11pts - Lost Game
Rd 9 - WB - 4.2 to 6.1 - Lost by 13pts - Lost Game
Rd 10 - North -1.2 to 2.5 - Lost by 9pts - Lost Game
Rd 11 - WC - 2.4 to 5.3 - Lost by 17pts - Lost Game
Rd 13 -Melbourne - 1.2 to 3.4 - Lost by 14pts - Won Game
Rd 14 - Richmond - 1.2 to 2.4 - Lost by 8pts - Lost Game

Last Quarter Scoring Shots

For - 31.36 for a total of 67 Scoring Shots - over 13 games played we average 5.15 Scoring Shots in the Last Quarter
Against - 45.41 for a total of 86 Scoring Shots - over 13 games opposition teams average 6.61 Scoring Shots in the Last Quarter

Difference is 14.5 or 19 Scoring Shots - average is that opposition teams have 1.45 more Scoring Shots than us during the Last Quarter

Last Quarter Margin

For 31.36 = 222pts
Against - 45.41 = 311pts

Difference is 14.5 = 89pts

The average over 13 games is that we are being outscored by 6.87pts in the Last Quarters

So we are being outscored by just over 1 goal on average.

It might be fitness, but usually it is a sign that the team is no good. The teams from 1979 to 1989 rarely won last quarters, with blow outs more often the order of the day. It reflects the high number of new players being played in order to find elusive success. Generally, the first quarter is even, but things deteriorate from there. Alas, watching the game on Sunday was as though we were back in the 80s. I couldn't find one player who convincingly beat his opponent on the night.

Against - 48.41 for a total of 89 Scoring Shots - over 13 games opposition teams average 6.84 Scoring Shots in the Last Quarter

Difference is 17.5 or 22 Scoring Shots - average is that opposition teams have 1.69 more Scoring Shots than us during the Last Quarter

Last Quarter Margin

For 31.36 = 222pts
Against - 48.41 = 329pts

We have won 2 and lost 11 lasr quarters. We have won 3 games and lost 10 games. not much in it. As perfectionist said some sides who arent good enough fade in the last.

I think we are looking for an 'easy out'.
If its just fitness hey we can fix that .
It ignores our first quarter effort against the roos and our second quarter effort against the tiges.
We just ain't good enough and our players don't look hard enough to me .
All round issues. Can't put it down to one simple thing .
We need about 7 good to very good players who are 23-27. We have none !

It perhaps reflects that the players ARE genuinely putting in for 3 quarters and get knackered. Compare that with Melbourne who often seem to have heaps left in junk time. When they can sustain it for the whole game we'll start to be competitive.

Armo and Jack Steven are very good and in that age bracket aren't they?

Both good - Id say 'very good' is a stretch.

Although it is the AFL - where the media calls everyone a 'Champion' :D :D

I would suggest Steven is very good- Armo is probably below that and just a good player at this stage. What more does Jack need to become very good in you opinion? His disposal has improved under pressure, he's getting more ball despite getting opposition attention and he's working hard. He must rate pretty high in the AFL rankings ATM?

Surprisingly Essendon are the best performers in quarter 4 this year.

I wonder why that might be?

Having a lot of players under 30-40 games doesn't help... Having small forwards that don't run through the middle doesn't help... Having below average skills doesn't help... It means that we have to work twice as hard to compete against good sides... Chasing arse all game long & turning it over when we get it.

Would it have anything to do with the fitness guy we got from the bulldogs which they faded badly in the 2nd half in nearly every game last year?

An alarming statistic. I hate to say it, but it's a little too reminiscent of the Twatson - Blight era. Argh...

We need some special juice!

I notice the Hells Angels opened a clubhouse down at Seaford last week?

Coincidence? Great opportunity . We all know the Bandido's clubhouse in Brunswick was a source of the Bombers last quarter 'come from behind' victories.

Now it seems the only 'coming from behind' will be what happens to Doc Reid in prison.

Mark Fine on SEN did a little editorial on our High Performance Manager Bill Davoren a week or so ago.
He talked about the Bulldogs perceived fitness issues in the four years prior to joining us and similar statistics to the ones posted above since he joined us.

Not to say it's all his fault but I wouldn't think this is going unnoticed.

That is my worry- uncompetitive and a lot of huffing and puffing players compared to their opponents after a contest.

I agree on the first point. It's actually a good point.

Disagree on your second point about small forwards though. That's where the game is heading. By 2015, teams will be made up of 21 small forwards. We're just ahead of the curve but just you wait, other teams will catch up to us and we will lose that advantage just like we did with the press and collapse back footy etc etc.

I think the most alarming stat in our final quarters is that we've scored just one goal on six occasions.

To put that in perspective, across the other 39 quarters for the year we've scored one goal just five times.

Further to that, we've been outscored by 119 points in final quarters this year. Compared to 50 points in first quarters, 33 points in third quarters, and we've outscored our opposition by 12 in second quarters.

Unfortunately young, inexperienced sides rarely put four quarters together.
