The Zebras have shown signs of inconsistency throughout the season, but have maintained a top four position. Coach Simon McPhee has found it difficult to pinpoint why the team hasn’t put forward the coherent performances that he would expect.

“I guess we need to find a balance in both our playing group as well as how we approach the game with training sessions. In the end, it is up to the ability of the players to be strong enough in the mind to play out the whole game.”

McPhee was able to take a lot from their unanticipated result against Werribee on Sunday.

“At the end of every game we evaluate our performance on the ground and also what we did in the coaches’ box. Even more so when you have a significant loss like we did to Werribee.

“I think the boys were competitive most of the game, but I was disappointed that they let Werribee get away from them in the last quarter and pretty much stopped fighting.”

Despite that result, the Zebras have upheld their top four ranking for a reason and that is due to several very talented players.

“A few of our most consistent players other than last week’s performance would have to be Adam Cockie, Myke Cook, Michael Sikora, Hamish Shepheard and our Captain Beau Dowler.”

A win this weekend for Sandringham could shake up the top half of the competition, with Bendigo and Werribee going head to head as well.

“Casey has the best win loss ratio in the competition, which highlights exactly how tough they will be to compete against.

“I couldn’t tell you who was playing who in other games, my attention lies with our next opponent and how they have been performing,” McPhee said.

Despite the loss, there were positive signs for the Saints with a number of young draft picks showcasing their talent.

St Kilda 2011 draftee Jay Lever, who at 200cm is equal tallest at the club, played his first game for the seniors and impressed coach Simon McPhee.

Playing in defense, Lever held his own against seasoned bodies such as former Geelong premiership player Nathan Ablett.

How has Dowler gone this season? Is he worth thinking about for next season?

I meant Ledger can't get into game , Archer is a unit but pace of game worries him

Ledger, Crocker having shockers. Ledger doesn't look interested.
Archer had work/strapping put on thigh at qtr time. Think copped cork at some stage. Been thrown into 2nd ruck as Shepheard went down with shoulder injury.

Dunell a class act off backline. Curren destroying Tom Couch from Scorps.

Wilkes doing very well considering conditions & being doubled teamed bit.

Wilkes is AFL standard and Polo and Farren are good players and look better than the rest. Marigliani is a good player at VFL level and shame he isn't listed. Ledger hasn't done much, Dunell seems to get a bit but not very noticeable. Archer is looking dangerous with out doing much and Shenton started great then has disappeared out of the game a bit.

By the way the stream is ABC 1 on free to air.

i'm not sure it's good that wilkes is playing well as a forward. i'm sure he's a good bloke but he's very unlikely to replace kosi and either way he isn't part of the next saints premiership side. given that he hasn't worked out as a defender, i'd kinda rather he just went back to perth quietly.

If Kosi gets hurt or suspended he is an automatic in. if Roos calf doesn't come up should play. Still young enough to have an over lap after Kos and Roo and Offers a more mobile target than Kosi. maybe Kosi could be a ruck and they could let him have another run at the forward post.

i'd rather see stanley in for kosi, in either of those spots. also sounds like dunell could be close to a game and while not as tall, that's another spot in the forward line. i just don't see what we gain from playing wilkes unless we're going to win the flag this year, which we aren't.

Dunnell doesn't look outstanding today. Shenton Cocky and Marigliani are the only ones looking any good this quarter.
