Watch the Bill Muhlenberg-led evangelists and Caroline Wilson-led moral brigade enjoy a collective orgasm over this decision in the next 24 hours.

I'd love to see the guy back, but I fear this will crush him.

For all the moral high ground the AFL can now take, I fear turning our backs on Ben will see him spiral into a place far worse then he's ever been.

He's done the wrong thing, but I feel for him. I hope so badly he stays fit and healthy over the next year.

Please get yourself right Benny :(

Not good enough, it'll be interesting what teams will do if their are a few at 4 - 5 wins around the round 16 mark, some might be tanking for a brownlow medalist as well as a #1

AFL kicks out Cousins for a year
November 19, 2007 05:20pm

DISGRACED West Coast player Ben Cousins has been suspended by the AFL for 12 months.

Cousins was found guilty today after a seven hour hearing in front of the AFL commission of conduct unbecoming and likely to prejudice the interest of the AFL and bringing the game into disrepute.

Cousins was sacked by West Coast last month after being arrested by West Australian police on two drug related charges, which were subsequently dropped.

The league, however, has given him an opportunity to return to football, saying he can apply for the 2008 draft to play in the 2009 season if he fulfils certain criteria.

More to come........

Indeed it is...I'm just worried he's already off-balance, and this will send him sprialling.

I hoped a new club in a new city would do wonders for his rehabilitation.

Alas, it won't be the case.

Right at this moment; screw football - I am seriously concerned about what will happen to him now. One of his best mates has died, he's lost his job and there's ongoing unrelenting scrutiny on him, too.

He might not know any other way to escape it all. Sad stuff.

Evertonfc it almost sounds like you want the guy to throw a seven so you can claim to be prophetic.

Almost.

maybe just maybe it will be his rock bottom ? from the person i know who has gone through rehab once said that you cant really heal yourself until you have hit your rock bottom for some losing ones job is rock bottom for others waking up in a gutter somwhere is rockbottom who knows i think it would be worse if he got away without any punishment then he would be inclined to think hes beaten the system again

good luck to him in his rehabilitation and, as others have said, perhaps this is what he needs to realise how perilous his drug addiction is.

i think that, ultimately, it is the performance-enhancing aspect of these party drugs that has forced the league to act

Ben Cousins uses secret entrance to face AFL hearing
November 19, 2007 06:03pm

DISGRACED Eagle Ben Cousins has been suspended by the AFL for 12 months. And he has admitted for the first time he has suffered from drug addiction.

Cousins was found guilty today after a seven hour hearing in front of the AFL commission of conduct unbecoming and likely to prejudice the interest of the AFL and bringing the game into disrepute.

Under today's ruling, Cousins cannot play or train with an AFL club for a year. He is however, able to play in lower leagues.

``Thanks to the commission for a fair hearing,'' Cousins said this evening.

``I'd like to address the fact I'm overcoming a drug addiction which is an ongoing process.

``Contrary to media reports, I'm a lot further down the track in my recovery. I would like to apologise to the AFL, players and supporters.

``I'd like to thank my family for their support. I'm bitterly disappointed that I cannot continue to play football but that's not to say I've given up hope of doing so in the future.''

Cousins was sacked by West Coast last month after being arrested by West Australian police on two drug related charges, which were subsequently dropped.

The league, however, has given him an opportunity to return to football, saying he can apply for the 2008 draft to play in the 2009 season if he fulfils certain criteria.

Earlier, Cousins drove through an underground players tunnel at Telstra Dome to arrive for his AFL Commission hearing this morning.

Cousins avoided the media and slipped through an internal entrance with his manager Ricky Nixon.

Nixon, who is managing director of Flying Start player management, has an office at Telstra Dome and is believed to have ushered Cousins in through his corporate entrance.

In an unprecedented move, security guards were placed at all entrances to AFL House.

The hearing started at 9am and is expected to continue well into this afternoon as Cousins confronts a charge of bringing the game into disrepute.

Former Hawthorn premiership player and AFL commissioner Chris Langford arrived shortly before 9am.

The destiny of the disgraced West Coast star is expected to be announced sometime tonight.

The outgoing Eagle will be joined by top QC David Grace, manager Ricky Nixon and father Bryan in a legal fight to save his career.

Cousins, 29, has prepared himself for the battle of his life, having spent the weekend relaxing at Point Lonsdale, near Queenscliff.

The coastal getaway was the perfect tonic for the Brownlow medallist after a Saturday expedition to Bridge Rd to buy a $1500 suit for today's hearing .

An eight-strong AFL Commission panel will decide Cousins' fate.

Former AFL chief executive Wayne Jackson, who ran the league from 1996 to 2003, was confident the panel would make the right decision.

"Over the years the AFL Commission has dealt with some incredibly complex matters and has come through, and I think tomorrow is just another major issue with which they've got to deal with, and they will," Mr Jackson said yesterday.

"I've been out of it for four years so I don't know how they'll approach it but they are all good, responsible, caring people and they'll do the very best they can."

Asked whether Cousins should play next year, Mr Jackson said: "Until we know the full story and all the facts it's a bit hard to make an informed judgment.

"I don't have a comment to make for public consumption."

Sports law specialist Paul Horvath said it was too difficult to say whether Cousins would be allowed to take part in the 2008 season.

But he said the dropping of all criminal charges against the footballer last week wouldn't necessarily help Cousins' chances.

"The factual problems that gave rise to the termination of his contract remain, regardless of the charges by police," Mr Horvath said.

"Even though there might have been technical problems with the police case in relation to the refusal charge, I understand the AFL weren't happy with his failure to co-operate with the authorities in terms of providing a blood test."

Mr Horvath would not be drawn on predicting today's outcome.

"It's very hard to say what may be determined in the case. As a lawyer you'd never go with a certainty one way or the other," he said.

"I'm not privy to all the points that have been listed on the charge of bringing the game into disrepute.

"He's being represented by a very skilled and experienced counsel. No doubt everything possible will be put on his behalf."

Its ironic how a player who is suffering a drug addiction illness and hasnt once tested positive to drugs, is banned for an entire season....

Yet we continue to allow all these proven recreational druggos to play the game.

It is quite ridiculous, IMO a player who steals a doctor's prescription pad to prescribe himself Valium is a dam sight worse than anything Cousins has ever done...

I agree with evertonfc in that I hope Cousins can regain his mental and physical health over the coming 12 months and get well again.

That's the toughest part of this process and would be an achievement greater than anything he did on the football field.

It takes at least twelve months to recover, so I hope Cousins uses the time to come back to full health.

Whether or not he plays footy again is an issue for this time next year.

And next year too hopefully a debate about whether pick #16 in the PSD will be enough to secure a fit and healthy Ben Cousins 8-)

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

Anyone else would have been sacked. Until he takes responsibility he's not going to recover. A long way to go yet.

Umm..I love the way people downplay guilt in drug addiction by equating the "illness" factor with catching a cold off someone on the train on the way to work. Yes its an ilness but its self-inflicted..he didnt get it by accident

He wasnt suspended for his drug use pre se..he was suspended for being found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute. If anyone thinks that hanging out with criminals, evading booze buses by swimming across rivers, numerous drunk and disorderly incidents..capped off with a proven cocaine binge in LA that may see him facing criminal charges over there...all conducted by a states highest profile player and ex captain..ISNT bringing the game into disrepute..then you need to open your eyes a touch

Oh..and..PROVEN recreational druggos?? PROVEN?? Do tell..actually dont..we dont want the board shut down thanks.

...So what are you trying to say with that line?

Although the names havnt been officially released...there have been over 20 cases of AFL players testing positive to illicit drugs. Proof there is players, playing who have taking illicit drugs.

Thats from the AFL. So im unsure what you were trying to establish with your challenge above.
