Who should wear the #4 from next year?

Post: # 478344Post Oh When the Saints »

From Baldock to Lockett to Thompson, the #4 guernsey at St Kilda has a proud and distinguished history, and is arguably our most treasured jumper number.

So who should wear it in 2008?

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

I think that Gilbert is the best option, the other options either haven't earnt it yet or have already made their jumper their own.

I didn't include Ball because he has played 100 games in the #14, and I don't know whether he would be inclined to swap jumpers, as he is making the #14 his own.

Would be a good choice though ...

I would be very surprised if he wanted to swap now, when was the last time a player played over 100 games in a number to go on and change it without changing clubs aswell?
I don't know any times when this has occured...

I chose Armo as he is a similar player to Thompson.

Gilbert deserves a low number but i think he would prefer to stay with 19 (he was born on the 19th day of whatever month he was born)

Montagna, interesting one - i think hes probably done enough to keep #11 but if hes happy to then let him go for 2

I don't think that he would want to change either just because 19 is a good looking unmber IMO...
As for Armoooo, I haven't seen enough of him and I would want to make sure that he is going ot cut it before giving him such an important number, as for Monty he is another player who I would expect to have already grown attached to his number...
Maybe Birss could go to number 2, but a lot of buzz on here seems to think that is going to King...

Gilbert is the best option.

Definate no to Montagna - has already changed once.

you forgot Paul Morwood and Joel Smith
Unfortunately between Breen and Lockett and Thompson some of the aura was removed

Should be left to Thommo to nominate. The same goes for No. 2 and Hamill.

Hey don't forget about the legendary Matthew Clarke and number 28... He was 28 right, I've forgotten about him already...

Leave it open for a year or two, see who is most deserving of it. Nobody really deserves an upgrade (and Fisher and Ball already have made their respective numbers their own). Gilbert is very close, IMO.

Give players a number and let them make their own history.

I remember when Kosi was given the No.23 by Stewie, he was interviewed and said he wanted to make his own mark, but would accept Stewie's offer. He didn't want to, but had no choice.

Let them make their own mark.

No.1 is Trevor Barker,
No.2 is Brian Mynott and Spud,
No.3 is Ross Smith and Burkie,
No.4 is Darrel Baldock,
No.5 is Ian Stewart,
No.6 is Bob Murray,
No.7 is Nicky Winmar and Lenny,
No.8 is Alan Morrow and Max,
No.9 is John McIntosh and Fraser,
No.10 is Bill Mohr, Neil Roberts, Carl Ditterich, Spider and Bakes,
No.11 is Greg Burns and joey is making a claim,
No.12 is Nick Riewoldt,
No.13 is Brian Sierakowski,
No.14 is Tony Lockett (won his Brownlow in that No.) and now Bally, etc.

There is a fair gap in most cases, except No.10, which seemed to attract a fair bit of class (except for Michael Roberts).

No.35 belongs to the one and onlyRobert Harvey Esq.
Imagine if Harves changed guernsey every second year.

Let Dal make No.26 his own, just like Roo owns No.12.

Gilbert for sure. MAybe Monty, but 11 is his own. Armo, yet to proove as number 4 is worn by established players, ala Plug. He did wear 14 too once at the start career. Gilbert, good choice and is almost established now with his run out of defence and confidence.

I voted Gilbert and I think he is the besz option because he hasn't made number 19 his own yet like other players have like Ball-14 and Montagna-11.

He is also our best young player IMO.

Judging by the number of no. 19 jumpers running around at Glenferrie today in the SS game, I'd say Sam Gilbert is going to be the next cult figure at Moorabbin, so hope he doesn't change his no.

I would give it to someone else my preference would be Andrew McQualter they gave him a life line and by giving him a respected number at the club would help his confidence and show that the club do believe in him.

The simple fact he's still on the list should be encouragement enough, if he needs a number to make him feel better then he also needs a hell of a lot more to make it.

These numbers need to be earnt or certainly given to those that have shown a lot more.

Maybe his Dad can take him to McDonalds if he makes it back into the Saint's line up.

I disagree some players need more encouragement then others Mini is one of those players Brooks was another they needed nurturing not to be called s*** and told they are hopeless.
