2nd half stats

Post: # 2023836Post WellardSaint »

Crouch was on track, early on, to have a 30+ possie game.

In the 2nd half, how many touches did these guys have
-Sincs
- Steele
-Crouch
- Byrnes
- Wood
- Windy
- NWM

Sinclair had 11 touches in the second half and Wood had 20

What's interesting is where they got their possessions

Both spent 80-90% of the time in the defensive half of the ground. Their heat map shows them both deep in defence at times.

That's not accidental. It's part of the plan. It's what the coach demands

The emphasis to defend means we lack the focus or the energy to score.

Steele and Crouch had 5 and 9 respectively in the third quarter. Zero touches in the last

Both spent 70% in our defensive half for the majority of the third quarter where they got their possessions

Sinclair only had 1 centre bounce attendance in the 3rd quarter. He tried again in the last with 3 attendances for 1 centre clearance

Owens only had 1 centre bounce attendance in the last quarter. He got the centre clearance. Not sure why he wasn't in there for the other centre bounces

All I know is that the heat maps of the guys considered to be our best distributors is very concerning for the third and fourth quarters. They weren't pushing forward

Nas and Hill spent 80% of the time in defence. Sincs spent 90% time in the defensive half

Must be hard as a coaching group when your relying on crouch ,sinclair , steele and owens to dominate games just to have a chance at winning games of footy each week.and effectively playing 3-4 players short because players like byrnes, gresham, hill and higgins give u sfa every .week .just saying

The ball lived in the back half

So you’d expect players to win most of the footy there

We could not win a clearance therefore lost field position

Carlton dominated stoppage

One thing I noticed in the 1st quarter was that Jack Steele did not come off the ground. Crouch did for 2 minutes before the quarter time siren, but Jack Steele stayed on. Is that normal practice? Is that spending all your petrol tickets too early?

Cripps and Docherty and Newman did have breaks in Q1. We kicked all 3 of our first quarter goals while Cripps was off the ground.

Second quarter was a very good quarter for us. We played safe footy and we were the more effective going forward.

It wasn’t our best quarter of the year and it wasn’t flash footy - just solid. We were clean and direct and we took contested marks.

Carlton in the 2nd quarter were sloppy. They fumbled the footy a lot even when there was no heat on them.I don’t think their big blokes took any contested marks either.

In other words, it wasn’t so much St Kilda being good as much as Carlton not turning up in the first half. In the second half they found their mojo. The played attacking footy and they had to after trailing by 22 points at half time.

It was pretty even in the third quarter and the usual suspects in Gresham, King and Higgins let us down with converting opportunities

As a team we laid 51 tackles in the 1st half …only 28 in total for the second half (21 in Q3 and ONLY 7 in Q4)

As a team we had 211 disposals in the 1st half and just 168 in for the second half (Q3- 97 and just 71 touches for the team in the whole of the 4th quarter)

That is a team wide drop off.

I have a feeling that the go to clearance winner over the last 4 years, is everyone block their opponents and hope Marshall can take it from the ruck or follow the fall of the ball and bang it forward.
