Training- Friday November 25

Post: # 1988690Post Saintmike65 »

Observations :

* Focus on quick ball movement forward of centre

* absolute look of determination from Windhager and Owens

* Hill back to his elite running capacity

* King looks stronger, as does Sharman

* Coffield now as big as Jack Hayes

* Peris lightening quick but still needs work on foot skills

* Byrnes looks stronger but still great endurance

* Allison looks more confident and enjoying his footy

* Bytel lean & hungry..Lenny likes him!!

* Adams not doing much..still very skinny

* Higgins a lot trimmer & moving better because of it

* Butler impressed..probably realises he won’t be gifted games

* Ross Lyon just a casual spectator but did acknowledge to the few of us watching there’s a lot of work to do

* BJ prominent in drills along with the 3 line coaches

* Damian Carrol doing one on one with players

I would add to the above:
Heath developing as a ruck/forward. Strong mark and accurate kick.
King being very physical, strong body.
Cordy another strong body and experience in defence. An improvement on Joyce.
RTB not directly involved, casually walking around talking to coaches, fitness staff.

Who impressed you SaintMike? Let’s call it now… whose your pick of superstar from one session?

I reckon Windhager and Owens have made a pact to drive each other to become elite

Let’s not count chickens

Windhager has made and impact and looks likely

Owens a few glimpses

Beware second year blues and going the early crow

Higgins THE one if he can stay clear of head knocks..Windhager another but I wouldn’t use him as a tagger any more!

Calm down BM, it’s not a crow. Just a bit of discussion on what is otherwise a generally slow period of the year.

I promise that if you too throw out ur best guess, we won’t view it as a contract that you’ve entered into.

It’s really more another way of expressing ur impressions

I don’t think there was much mention of Sharman at all to be honest.

He came back relatively the same size which many accepted as being due to the timing of his drafting. Then I seem to recall that he wasn’t really sighted that much and he wasn’t particularly standout’ish either.

Frankly I think this post is just wrong.

The narrative that you’re perpetuating started when the King being triple teamed thing started and Membrey started the season slower and tended to push up the ground more.
A few ppl myself included felt he would be a chop out and called for his selection primarily for the structure noting his form wasn’t that great in the VFL but people were impressed with the way he played last year.

Then you and one other forumite started carrying on as though he was the worst player of all time being hyped up to Godly levels… and you’ve perpetuated that carry on for long enough that I think it’s stuck for some.

So well done.

But no I think that’s a rubbish call

Whose counting chickens?
I reckon those two are extremely determined to become the best they can be. You can see it in their application.

Whether they will be is another thing.

Both Owens and Windhager love the contested stuff, especially Owens. He is the strongest 18 year old I've seen in my time watching the Saints ( a long time ). He is a beast and will be our version of Patrick Cripps. I know that's a massive call at this stage but from what I've seen he will be a player we are going to love.

Shoot me down if you want. I don't normally make huge calls on players but I'm really confident about this guy.

just a correction, the second worst player of all time, but on Sharman, one thing is for sure, he won't be gifted as much opportunity under Ross, pretty certain Ross doesn't like to give players a "run of games" to practice their apprenticeship on an elite sporting field. So if he becomes the second coming of Buddy I will be the first to state how proud I am.

Having said that let's see how Ross 3.0 goes about it, will he repeat the coaching style of Ratts and give a player an opportunity in the same manner afforded to Jack Hayes? ...Ross 1.0 and 2.0 wouldn't have.

BM is right in not spewing out his undying love to players who have achieved nothing on an AFL field, it's a St Kilda cultural attribute that holds us back...Messiah worshiping.

Lenny likes Windhager, Owens & Bytel, so you can rest assured they will get opportunities in our midfield..as much as we love the skipper, there is a blandness about the Steele, Ross & Crouch centre bounce set up that needs an injection of a different mix.
Add Gresham and Sinclair for short bursts & we might get somewhere.
What Ross does with Zac Jones will be interesting.

I dont think people thought Sharman was the second coming of Ablett, but the point was King needed help forward with another marking option to keep the defence accountable. Sharman was really our only other option and Ratten decided to play a natural goal kicker in defence rather than forward.

Some posters often deliever over the top criticism of players and their critiques become completely unrealistic and border on ignorant. I understand footy is an subjective game, but being completely black or white with no vision or understanding that others may percieve players strengths differently becomes very tiresome.

Rehab. Won't be running for a while. Back surgery is a serious matter. Bloody tough to come back from it for anyone, let alone an AFL footballer. This is why we had to be patient with Bytel. That injury and surgery basically set him back by 2 years.

I think you on the money. Windy and Mitch are our future. They could take us where we want to go. I think they will thrive under RL. Their approach he loves.

Of the hecklers Vortex & BM, which is Stadler and which Waldorf.

Vort probably the shorter - takes a particular set against high marking talls.
