When we will ever find a Nick Daicos?

Post: # 1968605Post saintkid »

Anyone see highlights or the game between Adelaide and Collingwood? Nick Daicos is a seriously good player and in his first year too. 40 disposals, 11 intercepts and 3 goals.
He is rapidly getting to A-grade status and his brother goes alright too. They will finish top 4 and will be well placed to challenge this year for another flag.
When are we EVER going to unearth players like that?
Since the Riewoldt drafting 20 years ago, we have not had another player make such an impact from early on.
Sure he's a father-son pick but we seem to never win here and in any of the drafts since 2001.
We had our chance with Petracca (the most obvious of all) and Bontempelli and a few others. However, we've kept missing with our picks and whoever we do end up picking, the club either gets it wrong or fails to develop players drafted.

Player Development - what player development?????

We'll never draft a player of that quality, our list guru's wouldn't be able to identify a player of that calibre, let alone get him on the Saints list.

If anyone ever asks what the Saints are good at, just say incompetence. They have perfected the art and seem very reluctant to let it go.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Nah, a ‘project player’ is more our style!

No exaggeration I think we have been the WORST drafting / developing team in the last 20 years, shown by our lack of Rising Star nominations.

Certainly right there.
Many here know how strongly I feel about Lethlean's appointment. A massive error by a rudderless club with a history of a weak and indecisive board, unlike the more successful clubs.
The thought of him still being in control as our CEO next year makes me think we will be entering a very bad phase of the club's history again.

NWM; M. Windhager; and M. Owens are excellent prospects.
Rowan Marshall has developed into an excellent player, like Dmac.
Coffield and Clark are very good when not injured.

Are you serious to use these examples to justify our recruiting over the last 20 years??
Have any of those draftees made the impact Nick Daicos and others have in their first year?
I have high hopes for Windhager, Owens and NWM but we have been crying out for a player to hit the competition like Daicos has for two decades!
As The Dud stated, look at our lack of Rising Star nominations and then look at our ladder finishes since our GF losses.
Forget the 2020 result where the COVID situation and the constant relocations created competition disharmony and the finals finish flattered us.

Yeah thank God for Sinclair but the better clubs have a multitude of success stories here, unlike us.
Lethlean threw the cheque book bigtime at other players who have already tasted GF success and aren't going to lose their status in the record books when their big retirement dollars from good old St Kilda get paid out.
I actually have more respect for how North are planning towards success with a bunch of fresh-faced, hungry youngsters with time and further development/experience on their side.

Petracca was a slow burn for Melbourne. Took quite a few seasons to become the player he is now.
McCartin is also playing really good football...just not for us.

Nick Riewoldt has 3 boys. Should be ready for when our window opens.

Nick Daicos wasn't drafted. He was gifted.

Big difference and a ridiculous comparison to our recruiting. Geelong won a few premierships because they were gifted Ablett, Hawkins, and Scarlett in the same way

Shai Bolton
Byron Pickett

These guys would be lucky to get a game at Sandy.
Not good enough to tie the show laces of Butler, Kent, Higgo. Come on, let's be air dinkum...I mean fair dictum for a moment

Whether Daicos was gifted or drafted is NOT the point of this thread. It is about our poor choices overall in bringing new, young talent to the club over the last 20 years.
I reiterate again, as others have here, compare St Kilda's Rising Star nominations to the other clubs in the comp.
No wonder we have been languishing for years while other clubs are winning or challenging to add to their premiership cups.
We haven't been anywhere near a flag threat since losing in 2010. That's 12 years now and our list management is the main reason to blame!
