Paton

Post: # 1948472Post terry smith rules »

Looks so shaky.

There was a bit of play in the 3rd quarter right in front of us

He had a kick from a free/mark he looked around then kicked it 5 metres to Lienert who had someone right on his shoulder. Terrible decision

There have been other occasions in the last few games

I think Jimmy comes back and there is shuffling but the kids keep their spots.

Has played 1 good game this season, actually half a good game.

Otherwise he’s been pretty average IMO

Sheez I'm thinking it's a bit harsh, he looked like he got his game going?? Maybe need to watch the replay.

I like the fact that Ratts and his assistants are happy to play Paton in the seniors. He won’t pick up the pace of the game playing VFL. The best thing for our team is for Ben Paton to regain the form he had prior to his horrendous injury and 12 months on the sidelines.

That’s the best strategy if you rate the guy and you think that his best is going to contribute to the Saints playing deep into September

We need to give him game time and the goal is to have your best players hitting their straps at the pointy end of the year. I don’t mind if Ratts manages his senior games and rests him if Webster, Highmore, and perhaps Clark or Long can fill in down back… in fact, we should really monitor the players with another 6 day break coming up and make some changes for players that are looking a bit tired

Paton was found out a bit today without Webster in the team, he had to be more responsible for his opponent and struggled with that and got caught spectating a few times instead of finding his man.

He also turned the ball over on numerous occasions by hand and foot

Paton is definitely not at his 2020 levels and still gaining match awareness. If Webster forces anyone out next week, it mighten hurt to give Paton a weeks rest. Connolly wasnt great in the VFL he has started playing defence a bit like Hill, he has very short arms when it comes to tackling.

Paton has always been indecisive with ball in hand. He will ignore short kicking options most of the time and then take a while to unload to a long contest. Hopefully, it'll improve. He hasn't played a lot of football

Definitely struggling.

Long deserves to retain his place if Webster comes back.

Paton should be the one to go.

He's been solid, can move with the ball and has been improving week on week.

Before judging harshly, who have his opponents been?

Id put Long on Greene and play Paton as the 7th in Greene's space.

Where is green’s space?

The forward line??

If he’s playing as a 7th - where is their spare???

In our forward half?
They would either double team King or get Lachie Whitfield free
I think Whitfield would do more damage as an outnumber that Paton

The roll backs will actually be DMac and Wood

Paton has done the job on Greene before
Either he or Webster will get it.

We have taken to isolating 2 forwards in the 50 because our incessant pressure is being applied across all lines. Suddenly we have spare players everywhere on all lines.

We are running and kicking the ball better because we arent all chasing the ball and we are creating space to gain clear possession until we find an out.

We are ranked highly defensively because we have highly skilled, composed and intelligent defenders who play a team defence.

Im expecting Greene will have to come up the ground to get into the game.

Id rather let Long go with him and have Paton attack the drop of the ball.

Paton is a good defender but his strength when he was on fire, was the ability to take the ball away. Leys get him doing this again.

Not only have we been withstanding immense forward pressure in defence, we are scoring with ease.

Melbourne fed the GWS there arses today. I expect us to do similar next week. They've won one game.

Keep it simple…Webster comes back in, Long slots back as a pressure forward.
Paton is still finding his feet, watch this space on Lienert in big, high pressure/ intensity games…could be found out!

I think Jimmy comes back and there is shuffling ...
It's amazing how closely their stats match ... there's nothing in it between Webster and Paton.
They could be each other's CLONES.

So far this season, some very astute and possibly drunk, punters on here have picked up on that 3% difference in efficiency and a few 1:1 clutch contests where Paton appeared to be not sure of what to do with the ball after wining it, have resulted in turnover and easy goals, but when Paton and Jimmy get the ball, their team mates look to run and spread. The team still seem confident in their ability to get the pill.

Were Paton's mistakes any worse than Battle's or Howard's?

I'm also wondering which small forwards have ripped us apart because of these alleged failings by Paton?

I know Dylan Moore kicked 2 on him to start the game against the Hawks.

Ben Long had Rankin vs GC so I’m not sure who Paton had

He hasn’t been terrible but has looked a bit off the pace at times.

Yes, Moore received two free kicks. Paton executed a perfect tackle, pinning one arm then Moore dived forward taking Paton with him. Don't know what Paton could've done differently. The 2nd was an excellent tackle, then snap from Moore. All in the first two minutes, cannot think of anything after that. Now, yesterday...

The Suns goals and their direct opponent:

Ainsworth - Wilkie
Rankine - Lienert
Casboult - Howard
Ellis - NWM via Holman outmarking Sinclair
Holman - Howard pass
Chol - Battle
Corbett - Howard
Ainsworth - Howard, unlucky, defence in disarray after quick ball movement.
Corbett - Wilkie, a good pack mark that should have been killed

Paton will improve as he continues to pick up the pace. I see him as an important part of our Back 6.
