Starting 22 and the rest

Post: # 1938570Post older saint »

Not too long now until Round 1 and with it the boring gap time between cricket and footy thought may as well start the best 22 debate coming into Rnd 1. Also looking at the rest of the list and my mug in the stand view.

B: Webster, Howard, Highmore
HB: Sinclair, Wilkie, Clark
C: Hill, Crouch, Billings
HF: Higgins, Membrey, Gresham
F: Butler, King, Marshall
Foll: Ryder, Steel, Jones

Int: Hannebery, Ross, Byrnes, Battle

Emerg: Sharman, Connolly, McKenzie, Bytel

Geary - Missed a lot of footy needs games. Also IMO not in best 22 automatically
Paton - see Geary - Webster has his role in above.
Kent -Behind Butler, Higgins and Gresham
Long - to me Forward pressure player his best chance but behind Butler, Gresham, Higgins and perhaps Kent
Allison - Needs to develop this year and push for a game by mid season
Wood - Could take Battle's spot. Apparently running well and does have X factor . Problem is gap between bad and good like day and night
Campbell - Back up ruck for Ryder and Marshall
Joyce - Back up KPP defence
Coffield - INJ
Wanganeen Milera - Rookie unseen
Windhager - Rookie Unseen
Owens - Rookie Unseen
Adams - Rookie unseen
Peris - rookie unseen
Kyle - rookie unseen.
Heath - Rookie development ruckman- wouldn't expect to see at Senior level 2022 ( hope not means rucks not injured)

Reality is Hannebery wont be fit, and always a smokey pops up for round 1 and senior player misses due to late starts, form etc.

I would have McKenzie instead of Ross.
Ross is prone to picking wrong option when he gets the ball.
DMack may not get the ball as much as Seb, but he will make fewer errors.
i.e. DMack will not cost us any goals and create turnovers to the extent that Ross would.

I'd prefer Sharman, Connolly and Bytel in the team ahead of Ross, and ahead of Battle also if he doesn't show something early on.

It will all be determined by who performs best in the practice games

Webster's 2021 was good but nothing on Paton's 2020. I think there's room for both given teams are running a few small fwds and some mids are now floating forward and dominating.

I think recently there was in interview with Ratten where he said Billing’s was going to be a permanent hff

Saynta, you're not one for hyperbole when it comes to recruits, so you must be mighty impressed with Hayes. Keen to see him in action.

Surely time has come when Ross is no longer a lock for starting 22.
McKenzie has earned a wing spot, Hill WILL play halfback again, opposite Sinclair.
Billings high half forward, Clark other wing alternating with Hannebery (if fit).
Battle third tall, Wilkie getting best opposition forward, Howard second best.
Bytel likely on the bench, Byrnes a handy medical sub.
I prefer 2 small forwards with a hybrid type for balance, allowing Marshall to be number 1 ruck where he plays his best footy.

Right now, Byrnes is a much better player than Bytel.

Bytel's last game was pretty good but I am not disagreeing with you.
