Pre trading of 2nd round picks left us potentially short for securing talent and it seemed a deliberate strategy of targeting mature aged ready made players.

With the 2018 crop coming into season 2 this draft looks to be a potentially good one for us.

#4 - Max King if injury free could be a superstar of the competition.
You wouldn't trade him for Walsh, Lucosius or Rankine, perhaps his knee injury did us a favor.

# 41 – Bytel - Injured year one but reportedly talented. High hopes.

# 47 – Parker - Mature aged punt, lots of flair and physical gifts, could make it as a player.

# 54 – Hind - Has done very well to be in best 22 at the moment. Should play 50 - 100 games for the club which is a great result for a pick #54.

# 67 – Young - Worth a gamble but only given one year.

Rookie draft #3 – Wilkie - Gun player taken in the rookie draft.
Probably our best value draft pick since a similar type of player was taken @ #55 in 2003.
Should play 100 - 150 games for the club.

Who would have thought the guy the club probably ranked 4th of the mature players (based on selection) would turn out the best of the crop and a lock in the team.

If Bytel becomes a player this draft will be a beauty.

Cal Wilkie is an absolute stud.

We struck gold with Sam Fisher once, and about 15 years later struck gold again with Cal Wilkie.

He is so versatile, rock solid and complete. Genuine captain material at this rate (in circumstances similar to those which lead to Geary's captaincy, in terms of the list. I don't think he has the strength of leadership to be captain over a Hayes or Riewoldt type, to be clear).

In a normal season you have 22 players required for minimum of 22 games plus finals.
That means that on average each year you need to recruit players for 500 games.
If you only get two per draft they would each need to be 250 game players.
It is those third and fourth players contributing maybe 100 game in a career that are important.
They are the guys that form your bottom six players that run out on the last Saturday of September.
When St Kilda's last window was open they could not hide their bottom six, they were exploitable.

Agree about King and Billings.

My comparison to Geary was that when he was named captain, we didn't have a King or Billings age and profile player ready. If that were the case again (which it won't be) you'd give it to Wilkie.

This year is big to see if Billings is ready next year. If he plays like that each week he could captain next year.

King about 4 to 5 years away. Dougal apparently could be captain too, but may not be ready in the next two years.

Hi ace. I've heard it all now. Petracca as Captain. Wow. Holy Mother of God. If ever a person was an immature man child ... You do know that Melbourne thought so highly of him in that regard that they didn't even bother having a leadership group this season - just Viney and Gawn.

He will not Captain Melbourne and frankly, if he was at St Kilda - I could think of at least 3 players in our team presently (outside of Ross and Geary) who would be considerably better Captains than him.

I take your point that Petracca has and will play more games than McCartin however, they're hardly immune from dumb/unlucky high draft picks themselves in recent times (Gysberts, Trengove, Scully, Morton) but to say he's Captaincy material is inaccurate and fanciful.
