Great Year From Steven King

Post: # 650396Post The Saintsational Man »

This is a bloke who hasn't been able to string together a 20 game season since 2002 and he played 22 games for us this year, out of a possible 25.

Everyone thought he was done and he's come out and been solid for us all year.

18.5 Hitouts per game
11 Disposals per game
2.7 tackles per game

While those numbers aren't awesome, they are solid.

It was good to have a solid ruckman in the team for once.

Well done Kingo you big cu*t.

Agree, a great onfield leader who doesn't stop trying until the final siren. Probably our best recruit for the season.

I have a new respector for King, but is he not out of contract now?
Does anyone know if he has expressed a desire to continue with the Saints?

Great pick up

He played 22 matches this season, the last time he played that many matches was in 2002.

And it was his best season since 2004

Adam Schneider has also been solid however a little disappointing. He is actually a fantastic leader, often encouraging blokes who have just been beaten in a contest or given away a big free kick.

Dempster has been the biggest surprise. I rated him as a stopper when we got him however his run out of defence and the occasional long goal really proved his worth. Shattered he probably won't be playing until 2010.

Charlie, well he's been what we expected. Good for depth, doesn't do much wrong but really doesn't add much to the side.

Kingy's been great this year and hopefully on the back of a full season this year there's a bit of improvement in him yet. Since he's beent here his attitude has been great and he's been a good leader aound the place too.

I love his physicality and the way he flies the flag. He dropped Robbie Campbell pretty good after he roughed up Nick.

Has been a very handy recruit, it's just a shame we had to take Charlie Gardiner with him.

He's been surprisingly durable, has learnt to work with our midfielders and he's easily the strongest player at the club. Compare his build to our other past ruckmen (Kosi, Rix, Blake, M.Clarke, Ackland) and it's damn obvious why Geelong have got the edge over the rest of the competition. He and BJ are the only two players at the club capable of putting anyone over 60kgs on their arse.

mmm hes going to be our main ruckman and it doesn't look like mg will be able to replace him. i'd like to see king work on his kicking skills though, if he can take contested marks and kick goals, maybe not as much pressure wil b on roo and kosi

Would be nice if he could mark over his head....hitting the ball to a contest does little....

Kingy has been very consistent this year, and has been our best ruckman since Everitt IMO. If he can keep his body in decent condition, he could play for another 2-3 years.

I agree I'v really come to like Kingy he has been a really good contributor to our team. He is a very experienced ruckmen that has defiantly been our best/most consistent recruit for this year.

And I think we should all give him credit for his choice in partners with the lovely Danielle Atkin!

Does this mean J.L-H can get bumped off for official mascot?

He's been the best ruckman we've had for a long time and would love him next year.

Without him it may have been a horror story for the midfield.

Ok... it was a bad joke.

Proved to be a great inclusion. His presence alone seemed to help guide the less experienced players in the right direction.

Good job, Kingy :)

One of those recycled player punts that has really come off. I'm a huge fan of King. He really knows how to use his size and physical presence at centre bounces and stoppages. So good to see a bid bastard in a Saints jumper exerting some physical authority on the contest. Really thrilled with his commitment, the fact that he played most of the year and the mature presence he brings on the field. Great pick-up.

It was good to see Kingy go well in the red white and black this year.

Hopefully he can back up again next year and help nurse in Ben McEvoy who will be a player in the years to come.

Took me a while to be won over, but King has done well for us and he's had a solid year..

It is interesting to note however, that he has been seen to have a great year, where Kosi, our no.2 ruck, has better numbers at pretty much every level, yet half the forum is calling for his head...

Does it merely come down to difference in pay??... Some of the posters in this thread lauding king, are the same ones saying Kosi is useless... Go figure?!!....

King has much better numbers in the ruck, which is what he's there for.
Kosi average hit-outs for 2008 = 5.6
King average hit-outs for 2008 = 18.6

King 6th on the list of total hit-outs for 2008.

Kosi kicked 30 goals to King's 5 and took 146 marks to King's 70.
Kosi had 22 more total disposals.
King laid 60 tackles to Kosi 49.
