Geez Spinner..bored during a 139 point Saints victory eh? They come along so often too ;-)

For me the ones that always stick in my mind for awesome atmosphere were

1979: After just missing the finals in 78 we knocked off the reigning premiers Hawthorn in Round 1 at Moorabbin..all was set for a great year..Id just moved to Melbourne and could witness every glorious victory...umm..we won 2 more games for the season

1980: Knocking off Essendon at Moorabbin. Jezzas first win as captain-coach after a draw the previous week v Richmond in his first game. Again hopes were high, the next week?? Flogged by South at the Lake Oval and that was the end of that

1985: Round 5 v Fitzroy at Waverley. Lost Rounds 1-3 by an average of 100 pts but broke the ice with this fantastic win. featured Plugger in the ruck in the last quarter.

The 1989 classic v Carlton at Moorabbin.

1997 Preliminary Final.

2003/2004/2005 Brisbane TD games. The TS40 goal and subsequent siren was the loudest noise Ive ever heard at a Saints game..and that spontaneous Milney chant in 05 send shivers up my spine

Other than those already said...

1995 - Round 9 vs Carlton @ Waverley.

We 16th with one win, they were 1st with one loss. They went on to win the flag only losing two games for the year but that day we smashed them 11.14.80. to 3.6.24.

1913 - Final vs Fitzroy @ MCG

After scraping into the finals we made the Final vs top side Fitzroy, who only lost two matches for the season. We went on to win by 25 points in the upset of the season, however back then, if the top side lost the final they had the right to a rematch which was then called the Grand Final. We lost that one by 13 points. With the modern system St.Kilda would be 1913 Premiers.

1991, Moorabbin. First ever game against the Crows. Final score 162 to 31. Plugger and Cuz play their first games for the year about 4 or 6 weeks into the season and Plugger kicked 12. Banger hit Plugger on the chest, laces out, about 20 seconds after the first bounce and away we went. The Crows started slowly and then backed off.

Danny hughes got a bath at FB, and got a huge send-off from the cage when dragged. It was our biggest win until the recent Brisbane shellacking and the first time I ever saw us really take a team apart. We were partying from halfway throught the second quarter and that night was a write-off. Great memory.

97 Prelim against Nth was a great game, and the 91 final against the Pussies (even though we lost it ) was a great game of footy, which we would have won if not for the thuggery of G Ablett Snr.

97 to come from 6 goals down to win.
big day in my life that one

took on half the sydney supporters .......
(had a bit of 'well suppressed anger' to release)

was protected by two mates .....

a line of sydney supporters came up to shake my hand after the siren

amazing

the win in the wet was a ripper dools ...... we needed that .....i spent the last quarter 'getting absolutely soaked '.......baying for that win

For me - 1972 Elim final against Essendon - George Young just killed em' 27 disposals, 11 marks and 6 goals - oh, and he played on a HFF!!!

1974 - vs Richmond at Waverley. We trailed by 8 goals at half-time. Had only kicked 1 goal for the game thus far - steamrolled them in the 2nd half led by the tough Glen Elliott and George Young.

1978 what a year - plenty of great games. Smashing both the eventual Grand Finalists in successive weeks towards the end of the year was just an ominous sign.

1991 vs Crows at Moorabbin. Plugger and Winmar game. Then Elim final in same year vs Cats. What a magnificent game of football.

1997 the whole season - especially the Prelim.

All the big games against the Lions at TD in 2003,04,05.

But none better than the Qf against the Crows at AAMI in 05 - a magical performance. A truely gutsy and inspiring victory. Plenty of others to mention - but would be here all day!!

We beat Essendon in both the 72 & 73 elimination finals but George Young
played in the 73 only.

Best game ever for anyone who followed the Saints in the 70's would be the last game of 1978 when we smashed the Blues at Moorabbin.

40,000 crammed in that day with qeues all the way to South Road.

Also Robbie Muir flattened Dennis Collins to make the day complete.

No problem yipper. George Young was indeed a great player for us alas only for 6 seasons. When he left at the end of 78 along with Rex Hunt, Glen Elliott, Carl Ditterich and Robbie Muir the club went backwards

Indeed. Fair chunk of talent there - 2 x crack forwards, a top ruckman, an elite midfielder and a tough, uncompromising defender. Little wonder we had a horrid 80's era.

great topic

1976 wins v Carlton at Waverley in the mud against the odds (we never used to beat them)
and v Hawthorn at Princes park with under strength team and Hawthorn at their best

1978 v Melb , the high score

1993 v. pies at vp , winmar and jumper

1991 elimination final .. yes we lost but was a fantastic game of football

1992? the devenport snap to beat the pies

1997 prelim and and the swans game

plenty more but that will do for minute

SaintBot wrote:Name the best games in St Kilda's history and mention why they are special victorys (or losses).

Here are a few that iv got, bear in mind i havnt seen most of the earlier games so im just assuming they were good matches.

1900 – Round 1 – Beat Melbourne after an after game protest to win their first game in the VFL after 48 straight losses

1913 – Preliminary Final – Beat first placed Fitzroy by 25 points to produce one of the biggest upsets in the history of football. With the current rules the Saints would’ve been premiers but in the early 1900s the first placed side could call a rematch if they lost. The next week Fitzroy and St Kilda would play again only this time Fitzroy won by 13 points

1963 - Round 1 - Beat Melbourne by 18 points with young ruckman Carl Ditterich making his amazing debut. Future stars Ian Stewart and Bob Murray also made their debuts

1965 – Semi Final – Beat Collingwood by one point

1966 – Grand Final – Beat Collingwood by one point to win their first (and to this date, only) premiership

1972 – Elimination Final – Beat Essendon by 53 points

1973 – Elimination Final – Beat Essendon by 61 points, new recruit George Young dominated with 6 goals off the half forward flank

1975 – Round 11 – Having only kicked 1 goal to 9 at half time the Saints conjured a massive comeback to win by 12 points

1976 – Round 8 – Beat Carlton by 38 points on the mud of Waverly Park

1976 – Round 12 – An undermanned St Kilda side defeated eventual premiers Hawthorn by 25 points

1978 – Round 6 – Beat Melbourne 204 to 141 breaking the record for the highest aggregate score in a single game, a record which still stands

1978 – Round 20 – Beat eventual premiers Hawthorn by 56 points

1978 – Round 22 – After losing to Carlton by 100 points in round 11, the Saints thrashed the Blues by 40 points. 35850 spectators squeezed into Moorabbin

1980 – Round 4 – Beat Essendon by 3 points, Alex Jesaulenko won his first game as captain/coach for St Kilda

1985 – Round 5 – After losses of 110, 140, 113 and 39 points to start the season the Saints won their first game against Footscray by 4 points

1989 - Round 2 - Beat Carlton by 4 points ending an 8 game losing streak against the Blues

1991 – Round 1 – Defeated two time reigning premiers Hawthorn by 25 points in front of a packed crowd of 22060 at Moorabbin

1991 – Round 7 – Beat the newly formed Adelaide Crows by 131 points, biggest win in the clubs history until round 22, 2005

1991 – Elimination Final – Lost to Geelong by 7 points, Tony Lockett kicked 9 for St Kilda and Billy Brownless kicked 8 for the Cats. One of the hardest fought finals of the 1990s

1992 – Round 12 – Beat Collingwood by 1 point after a snap by Craig Devonport late in the game after he famously copped a spray on the boundary line from coach Ken Sheldon

1992 – Elimination Final – Beat Collingwood by 8 points to advance to the Semi Finals

1993 – Round 4 – Beat Collingwood by 22 points, after the game Nicky Winmar lifted his jumper and pointed to his skin in remark to being racially abused by Collingwood fans

1994 - Round 7 - Beat Sydney by one point after being down by 48 points at three quarter time. Tony Lockett kicked 11 goals

1995 – Round 5 – On the bottom of the ladder with only one win, the Saints shocked the football world by beating Carlton, placed first with only one loss, winning by 56 points

1996 – Round 5 – Beat the Western Bulldogs (then Footscray) by 26 points. The game was played two days after St Kilda legend, Trevor Barker died of cancer at the tragically young age of 39

1997 - Round 19 - Beat Sydney by 9 points after being 16 points down at three quarter time

1997 - Preliminary Final - Beat North Melbourne by 31 points to reach the Grand Final

1998 - Round 6 - Beat West Coast by two points at Subiaco after being down by 18 points at three quarter time, Brownlow Medallist Robert Harvey was in top form, earning 34 brilliant possessions in this game

1998 - Round 10 - Beat the then second placed Sydney Swans by 101 points

2002 – Round 16 – Beat Carlton by 43 points, the St Kilda supporters started the wooden spoon remarks against the Blues as they squandered to their first wooden spoon in history

2003 - Round 11 - Beat Brisbane Lions by five points in the year of their third straight premiership

2003 – Round 18 – Beat Richmond by 80 points in Nathan Burke’s final game

2004 - Round 6 - Beat Brisbane by 1 point after unlikely hero Troy Schwarze slotted through the winning goal from 55 meters out with less than a minute to go

2004 - Round 9 - Beat West Coast by 101 points, St Kilda's forwards had a field day with Guerra (7), Gehrig (5), Milne (4), Hamill (4) and Riewoldt (2) kicking 22 goals between them

2004 – Round 10 – Beat Carlton 196 to 88, completed a ten game winning streak

2005 – Round 14 – Beat the Western Bulldogs by 18 points in an exciting contest, was the first of a 7 game winning streak

2005 – Round 18 – Beat Melbourne 176 to 88, Nick Dal Santo kicked 5 goals and gathered 25 possessions as rover in a best on ground performance

2005 – Round 22 – Beat Brisbane by a club record 139 points, Stephen Milne kicked 11 goals

2005 – Elimination Final – Beat Adelaide by 8 points, winning a seemingly impossible final

2006 – Round 11 – Beat Sydney by 2 points after a super tight contest in wet conditions at the SCG

2007 – Round 12 – Beat West Coast at Subiaco, winning another seemingly impossible game, the Saints lifted for club legend Robert Harvey’s 350th game
i think i have added everyones submission. any others?

The most entertaining game I ever went to was round 15 1995 vs Geelong at the MCG. Attacking football, skills, Ablett specky (over Sierra), Harvey late snapped goal, Winmar overhead defensive pack mark to make the game safe. Brilliant game. Would love to have it on DVD...

Saints 2.6 9.10 12.13 13.15 93
Geelong 3.3 6.3 10.4 13.7 85

my dad says:

some time between 79-82 we played the hawks at princess park, were down by a bit and looked like it was all over. it was pooring rain and fights left right and centre. we ended up winning by a good 40 points and everyone was going crazy................does anyone remember that one?

and he also says does anyone remember the time at Vic Park when we were up by 52 at half time and lost by about 10 points?
