Baker in the forward line?

Post: # 480059Post Armoooo »

Would anyone else think that this can work?
We already have some good backline options like the Fishers, Goddard, Gram, Gilbert, Maguire, Hudghton, Attard (when he recovers), Raph etc.
He is also probably not able to keep up with the best midfielders anymore but what do you reckon about him tagging the teams best half back flanker and maybe kicking a few goals for himself, he can definately kick them, we;ve seen that a few times this year and with him, Milney, Schneider and Xavier all in the forwardline we would have a great deal of pressure...
We have two talls in Roo and Kosi, and we could have four quality smalls in Xavier, Schneider, Milne and Baker. I would rather we had a third tall such as Allen or Goddard and have the three smalls in the forward line plus one at a time either in the midfield or bench...

Terrific idea.

Is actually one of the best shots at goal in our side, and is pretty creative around goal (if you've watched at training sometimes).

Would add great tackling pressure, and could push up into the midfield.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

plus he might be less liable to snot someone or do something reportable if given a different role than tagging

Could work in spells... Would certainly add terrific pressure and a different dimension, and as OWTS pointed out, is a pretty reliable shot at goal. I'm sure that opposition coaches would be a little taken aback at the move as well - which would add an element of surprise to our attacking structure!

I was just looking at some of the teams attacking back flankers and there are some pretty dangerous players in there and shutting them down could really damage their attack:
Adelaide: McLeod, Johncock
Brisbane: Lappin, Adcock & Drummond
Collingwood: Heath Shaw, Lockyer
Geelong: Mackie
Hawthorn: Hodge
Kangaroos: Sinclair
Port: P.Burgoyne
Richmond: Raines
Sydney: Kenelly, Malceski
West Coast: Waters Hurn
Bulldogs: Gilbee
If he could shut down one of those players every week he could be just as effective as shutting down on of their main midfielders not to mention he could also hurt the opposition on the score board...

Would have to play VERY deep. Occasionally has trouble negotiating the upper reaches of the average jam tin   !!

Except at Subiaco in Harvey's 350th when he nailed it from 50m in the 2nd quarter

Although I believe the wind was behind him at the time

Or you can selectively choose to remember his 2 failed attempts at goal in Tasmania during sirengate.

As he gets older, and plays less of a tagger role, I still think he would go well in a forward role.

Just what I was gonna mention :P.

However, the idea of using baker as a defensive forward is a pretty good one ,especially in todays game where the attacking half back is one of the most important players on the field.

As for sirengate you can't really hold two kicks against him when looking at his career, that was also at the end of an exjasuting match under a lot of pressure, when will he ever be in that situation again...

Good creative thinking Armooo.

Love the idea of him creating forward pressure - he'd be a menace.

However, with our midfield already short on quality bodies, we can't sacrifice one of our best five midfielders.

If we land Cousins, it could be done

That's true with Baker in the forward line our midfield does look a bit soft, but that is why I would have Birss ahead of Fiora in our starting 22, I think that would keep the team balanced...

Only guessing but he is saying is Bakes isnt a forward and we are in real trouble if he plays there. And he is right.

According to the posts lately we have
half our team moving into the forward line

Bakes and Goose for starters hey lets give max a run
the fishers at hf then gilbert can tag the running backs
move our midfielders into the backline and bring the
remaining back to run on the ball and of course milney in the ruck

Disagree with this comment. Lyon has used Baker in a more attacking role in '07, but this by no means indicates he can't run with the best midfielders.

we just picked up schneider,

if bakes plays up forward then milne would be playing reserves.
