I personally said I like him as a player, doesn't make him a great captain. Banger was an awesome player, but you'd never have made him captain.
Who was captain of the club in 2001 & 2002?
I remember those years, we were flying.

+1

Now that there's a pile on started, I recall something RTB said in his media interviews last week after the Hawks game - or maybe it was after the North game.

He said the sports guys told him Marshall needed to come off the ground and Steele was due for a rotation and "I made the call to leave them out there".

I watched the replay of the Carlton game and the coach had both in the centre at most centre bounces and stoppages in the 3rd and in the last quarter. That's too high a workload.

Steele was good with some important chase downs and tackles in the last quarter, but there was no spark. No freedom. We were hunting to defend. They were hunting the footy

Anyway...point being....coach has admitted he makes the call to do these things. Leave players out there, even though they are due for a rest.

So... It's not inconceivable that Lyon made the call once too often in Q1 and Q2 and Q3 and both Steele and Crouch had nothing left.

Righto 8-) Watch the RTB fanboys come at me and dismiss that explanation

FQF
Now he’s just too tired FMD
11 touches for the game and poor Jack needs a rest
Heard it all now…
What other batshyte weird theories you got in your Lyon kick bag?
It’s kinda twisted but funny all the same ..👍

It's obvious to all (including the commentators that Steele had a role to fulfil). That's the nature of the bloke coaching. 'Ryan Crowley' ring a bell...maybe Clint Jones ring a bell??

Only a muppet would think that Steele was hunting the footy first
The COACH stated Steele wasn’t tagging
Only a muppet doesn’t realise Steele isn’t an attacking mid - have a look at how many times he’s second to the ball????
How many tackles he lays cause he’s SECOND to the ball???

Cripps is a playmaker- night n day

Over 21 games that’s a lot of apparent constant bagging.

Stand by it he’s a liability his skills aren’t up to it.

Far different to suggesting a player isn’t trying or lazy or disinterested.

His effort is there but he simply doesn’t have the polish or smarts to be a reliable AFL standard player. He makes far too many basic errors.

My thoughts on Byrnes are based on his skill set and football smarts.

Not his effort or attitude.
still.. a bit harsh , I reckon he has done ok considering who we have to choose from

His effort is there but he simply doesn’t have the polish or smarts to be a reliable AFL standard player. He makes far too many basic errors.
who takes his place ?

Yes I understand that and that’s been the problem all season. Ideally McKenzie as his overhead wirk is beneficial to our defence.

Curly said Byrnes is no good and disposal terrible, e.g. he hardly ever kicks to a team-mate or at least to our advantage.

That's something I agree with- he can get a lot of the ball, but sometimes kicks accurately. But not enough.

Higgins disposal poor.
True, he's not reliable, and if he's not accurate now at his age, he'll never be.
Also, he can be selfish, but in his position he needs to be greedy like Milne.
Problem is, he ain't Milne 2.0.

We've seen him get 4 or 5 goals.
But he's purely a downhill skier.
I rate Butler a little higher for fwd pressure, as he chases, harrasses, keeps at it, at least doesn't drop his bundle. Higgins does. Often.

Trade Higgins. 3 yr contract? Then let him wear those ugly Zebs colours until he can learn another trick or 2.

Explain to me

1) what a captain does that’s so important?

2) what is it Steele doesn’t do?

It is the MOST OVERRATED thing in footy

Even more so than the coach!
