Far out! Phillipou soars to secure Rising Star nom
Mattaes Phillipou has received the Round 8 Rising Star, becoming the second Saint to be awarded the accolade in 2023.
By saints.com.au - Just now

Mattaes Phillipou’s electric beginning to life as a Saint has tonight been recognised with a nomination for the 2023 AFL Rising Star.

The Saints’ first-rounder pieced together 13 disposals, five score involvements and – much like Mitch Owens in his nomination game – an unreal Mark of the Year contender during yesterday’s win over North Melbourne.

Strength Through Loyalty: Become a 2023 Member as we celebrate our 150th Year
It comes off the back of an impressive body of work over the past few months, which has seen Phillipou feature in every game this season to help his side to a 6-2 record.

Forming part of the Saints’ improvised forward line following injuries to its key stocks, the 18-year-old has also run through the midfield at stages, even lining up for several centre bounces alongside the likes of Jack Steele, Brad Crouch and Seb Ross.

Phillipou has quickly endeared himself to the Saints’ faithful in his limited appearances at senior level, with his father, Sam, among the most passionate in his corner.

Sam, who played three games for Footscray in 1995, was the one to deliver Phillipou the news of this week’s Rising Star nomination, dialling in via FaceTime at Melbourne Airport while en-route back to Adelaide.

The No. 25 is the second Saint to be nominated for the AFL Rising Star this season following Mitch Owens (Round 4).

Anthony Caminiti remains the only Saint to be tried at senior level eligible for the award in 2023.

Well done. I had Amiss (3 goals), and Humphrey (influential game against good opposition) ahead of him.

I guess we do just love big marks.

Well edited. Who got the nomination again? By the time I read all of that I'd forgotten.

Hard to see how it was warranted in that particular game, so it must reflect his season so far.
Big mark helped no doubt

It’s clear the kid can play and to think he’s barely 18, which a few of the commentators have been mentioning lately.

Hopefully we can hand him a contract extension before the season is over!!

3 of the last 10 Rising Star nominations have been St Kilda players.

2022 Round 22 - Marcus Windhager
2023 Round 4 - Mitch Owens
2023 Round 8 - Mattaes Phillipou

Good to see others on here with equally low bar on their technical skills as me

I though Philippou played really well against the Kangas: while his stats were far from outstanding, I observed him working really hard and making lots of small contributions.

Well done sir!

He got interviewed on the ground straight after the final siren by Sarah Jones from FoxFooty.

He spoke really well. Future leader, no doubt. Well done Pou

Presented really well on 360 too. I thought that interview was a bit shallow from Whately and Robbo's end for what Pou would have been able to deliver. I guess they have a specific rising star interview brief.

Norf's vice-captain Jy Simpkin was fined for...
Pulling out Mattaes' GPS sender and chucking it 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️
$1500 fine...it happened in the 3rd qtr

The video is on news.com.au.
Mitch had just got a free inside F50 for a tackle+HTB, Simpkin walked behind MP n pulled out his unit, chucked it to forward pocket.
Ump paid 50 🤣😆
Childish behaviour
