He had a really good final game in 2020 as I remember.

Never looks under pressure. Cool under pressure.

I'm sure you folks all remember what Coff n Max King were doing in the preseason before Coff did his knee.
Both guys engaged the services of a running coach, that they paid for, not the club, because they wanted extra tuition.
They were keen to improve their stamina and/or speed.

Lyon won't tolerate hesitation.
If that’s the case, then it’s odds on that Nick and JB and Hilly and maybe even Seb Ross will be among the first players to be dropped. They have to change the way they both defend…. and also the way they attack the footy from this point on
I've got a feeling Hill & Billings will be fine.

Billings to be given a position until he succeeds and Hill to be supported for his strengths, not set up with his small bodyweight and skills to lay tackles but available to get the passes and the rest of the team positioning themselves to get the best out of his quick passes under pressure - for a change.

Hill mostly found himself working in congestion because our back half was being bombarded and with our forwards pushed up the ground too far in a defensive press, there was no proper set up for him to run and link up with teammates.

Watching Geelong late in the season showed the way it was done with Isaac Smith, a similar player to Hill, absolutely killing it because of the way Geelong set up. They were far more organised, and Smith would run through the centre of the ground at top speed to receive handpasses. He then had forwards to kick it too because they all hadn't pushed up to the wings. When we pulled out of defence, we had all our remaining players clustered in this congested mess.

Not sold on Coffield. Needs far more aggression, especially in the air. Sometimes I think we want them to succeed so badly that we deflect what’s in front of us. Coffield has 2 years to prove himself otherwise I’m afraid he could be out of an AFL career

I think an issue with Coffield was in 2021 they tried to change up his style way too much. They got him to bulk up a bit and wanted him to play taller…
Reminded of when GT did this with Goddard like he could play KP. It was a bad move because the key trait in his game is running and play making.

Coffield is pretty decent in the air but that feature of his game needs to be a nice feature as opposed to an essential quality. I thought the penny had dropped for them all last year but the injury stopped us from seeing it in flight

Hopefully this is the year

Josh Battle doesn't hesitate. Loves body contact when he's spoiling. Never took a backward step when it came to the physical stuff.

I think he has a very long way to go, and I don't really see much yet, but good luck to him.

Slow to get going then a standout season & looked as though he had turned the corner then had a shocker season & then did his knee. I'm hopeful he can get back to the form of 2020 but you never know . I guess we will will find out pretty soon .

going to have a cracker of a year.
I reckon Lyon might let him play loose as a rebounding defender and set up rotations with Membrey and so he can push forward on the outside and get in range of goals.
We need to players like him and Battle and Clark to begin attacking more.
If we are going to improve it just has to be a slingshot running game and we have to attack more.

I thought that’s all we had been doing - a sling shot running game. We need far more strings to our bow

How do you play ‘loose’ as a defender?

That's an easy question to answer, you put Sharman in the backline to practice his natural leading patterns and goal kicking.

See Pies' Moore and Ds May. Flexible, with judgement. Tight then hunt the ball when situation calls for initiative. Adapt to which side has posession and where the opponent positions. Needs great athleticism and skills set.

Are you saying Moore and May don’t have opponents?

They are the same as Dougal Howard - they take the number 1 key forward

They don’t play loose

Just trying to help you understand with examples.

In need of a huge pre season. Shown he can play at the level… just needs continuity. Ross will find a nice role for him.

What I can tell you for a fact is that as the 2021 season progressed, the Head Coach took Coffield aside and told him they wanted run from him, so use your legs.

Toward the end of 2021, having invested into "use your legs", Coffield's good form had returned.

The preparation for 2022 saw the further focus on "use your legs", so kg's lost to return his pace.

Coffield is a class footballer.

Was very good in the final at the Gabba V Bulldogs.
Last 1/4 took about four intercept marks in 10 minutes.

Looked like he’d come of age as a future gun player. Classy, good mark, good disposal, reading the play well.

Everything since then has been extremely average.

Hope he can come good in 2023.

I would just like to know - how a key defender plays ‘loose’
