Ratten wanted mid-season determination...
...about future contract....
....prior to the start of Season 22.
he was played..
Tough?
He* tried to push the club to give him a determination..pre-season by demanding that the club tell him mid-season..(demanding? Asking??)
Bassat and co. are seasoned campaigners...
They say, 'Sure Brett, whatever mate..."
Brett (his manager) had signed their (Bassat and co.) 'get-out-of-jail' pass right there and then.
Rationale: If he's gonna push us to tell him early, then all bets are off.
What can we be expected to do.
I've seen this scenario play out at work too. People ask some testy questions at times, half-expecting a 'No', but they get what they think is a signal of acquiescence, and so go ahead and burn their own career at the place. The authorities don't want a confrontation (and St Kilda doesn't want a press story) so they 'play dumb' and comply.
Risky strategy but it gives them more leverage in the end.
Now the bit about giving Ratts a chance to talk them out of it, was also a calculated test IMO.
*bet it was his manager, and not Ratten but do no know obviously
The press reaction has all been about poor Ratss, and of course we love him ten times more than 'you know who'...
But, if you push people to give you approval before those people feel they have had a reasonable time to judge - watch the f out! And Read the tea leaves with a microscope!

Not an entirely unsuccessful strategy by Ratten if true. Got himself an extra 6 months pay.

Re: Ratten wanted mid-season determination...
If ever a bloke had poor body-language, it was Ratts in the second half of the season. I wouldn't see that look inspiring the players- a look of exhaustion and defeat. I think Bassat as a high-powered businessman would look at that and not be impressed, and if one of his execs or managers moped around looking that way, it would be pick your act up, or clear your desk out.

He was played? How, by getting resigned and then sacked? Sounds like a pretty brilliant strategic move if you are possibly going to get the boot anyway to be able to be resigned and then have to get a payout for the new contract.
You don’t think it’s more likely that the club resigned him, had buyers remorse and then decided to make the call and wear the financial loss? I don’t think bassat was really playing 4d chess with this one like you may think!

Re: Ratten wanted mid-season determination...
I would say all parties agrred that the new contract could be terminated at any stage with a maximum payout being 6 months hence Ratten was well aware that if the team missed finals he was likely stuffed ....... it was a non negotiable
Fast forward ..... he got stuffed and he knew the writing was on the wall ...... just a matter of when and the strategic process of doing it
Well played by the Club

it does seem ... that
at 8-3 , it was set up for Ratts
the 3-8 that followed
sealed his fate

Re: Ratten wanted mid-season determination...
I wouldn’t be letting the club off that lightly. In all likelihood, they would have probably given him a 3 month payout anyway but still.
They should have waited until the end of the year. There was no rush to do anything and there were a few worrying signs.
“It’s looking good Brett. Let’s have this conversation at the end of the season”.

Re: Ratten wanted mid-season determination...
You forgetting that if Ratten was pushing mid season for a new contract and the club held him off and we did make finals then he could have done a Lyon and said thanks but I am going elsewhere for more money cause you showed no faith in my abilities when we were 8-3
Now good chance he would stayed on anyway but we know at least 3 clubs have signed up new coaches ..... GWS Essendon & North at seasons end
Just imagine if we finished Top 4 .... we hadn't signed him .... and Essendon came knocking with big bucks and he left .... the Media would have ripped us apart for not signing him when we were 8-3
It seems we can't win either way

Rumour is Matt Finnis pushed to have stability and didn’t want this bouncing round end of year
Thank **** he’s gone

Damage done though. Until we have an administration that demands success and a playing group that bleeds for the guernsey, St. Kilda will just be a sh*tty football club.

2020 was tough, in a Noosa bubble.
Cuddles got the best out of a rabble by being the good daddy to all the stressed out players.
2021 showed us where the list really stood.
This yr, the only exciting wins were vs Tigers n Cats.
Full of skill.
Hawks win? They didn't turn up, they were off the boil.
Dockers Rd 2? Sean Darcy did an ankle, did us a favour.
Our backline breathed a sigh of relief.
I was at that game, Dockers had us on toast until Darcy went down.
Other games showed our true colours.
We were never gonna be top 4
A real Sainter will pledge allegiance to the ❤ and despise the Pies, the Blues, and the Injectors.

Ratts like all prevous coaches won't come out and say anything for a while. most of our ex coaches hate us. never heard from Richo. probably means the saints were correct in getting rid of him.

As said he probably knew the game was up once we missed finals .... so really he has no out as it was likely made clear to him when he extended his contract

Re: Ratten wanted mid-season determination...
Yep
But the media types ignored the words Bassat said. 'Ratts told us pre-season he wanted confirmation so...."
It fits the media narrative (and Barrett types) in particular, to pile on St Kilda whenever the opportunity presents. So now we are crud. Look at Barrett after that review on Sunday Footy Show following our Bulldogs loss, all incredulous that Ratts was re-signed.
I guess we'll never know. Ratts will eventually publish a book, and I'm sure that there will be more scuttlebut - and some of it will be fair, some will be muck for muck's sake.
I guess they can't write a clause in the contract: "Thou shall not write bad stuff about the Saints in book after retirement" lol
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!
