Re: Best value recruits
BM, interesting thread you have going but as I remember you were not a fan of battle - turning circle of queen mary etc.
This recruiting caper not that easy. Be interesting to do a thread on the bad selections - Brad Howard taken pick 26? when not expected to be drafted and Frost who was dropped off Bulldogs list of 65? taken by our first pick.
These are two of the less obvious ones never the less it cost us a first and second pick

Played 1 game for zero possessions.
Cayd Beetham who was pick 9 in 1999 after we recruited Tony Francis from the filth with pick 7.
Beetham who only played 30 odd games for the saints always thought he was too good for the wooden spooners.
Francis faired worse only playing a handful of games in Saints colours.

Ben Walton at #16 in 1997...Freebird wrote: ↑Thu 04 Aug 2022 6:00pm BM, interesting thread you have going but as I remember you were not a fan of battle - turning circle of queen mary etc.

#20 Dean Soloman
#25 Nick Stevens
#31 Simon Black
#43 Adam Goodes
Our best pick - Matty Carr at #7 in the rookie draft... hung around just long enough to be traded when starting to look good and went on to have a good career at Freo.
The worst of it, first 2 players of the PSD...
Jamie Shannon to Melbourne
Joel Smith to Hawthorn
Ouch

Re: Best value recruits
Very happy when we snared Battle with pick 39 at the time
Bargain
Every players has weaknesses - but their strengths are what counts
Battle
Brave, good hands, elite endurance, good kick
Weakness
Agility, below knees
Overall
Very good player

I wasn’t around to see Eric Guy, but my Dad thought he was the toughest ever. A few other old timers agreed.
Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

Re: Best value recruits
I was in the Saints rooms at half at Glenferrie oval with my old man in the early 60 against those hawk pricks and that absolute filthy mongrel Brendon Edwards.happy feet wrote: ↑Thu 04 Aug 2022 10:07pmI wasn’t around to see Eric Guy, but my Dad thought he was the toughest ever. Saints were just starting to come good with a young coach named Allan Jeans.
The hawks had monstered the saints and half the players were getting pain killing injections. The docs approached Guy with their needles. I remember clearly he waving them away and telling them to f*** off.
I was also at the JO the day he shirtfronted Bobby Skilton. I thought he had killed him.
There is no doubt in my mind that Guy was by far the toughest Saint and one of the toughest men to play the game.
Baker was not in the same league and was more of a sniper. Loved both of them though.

Re: Best value recruits
Baker was ridiculously tough - he did some scary brave things
He also did some shameful things
Thing about Baker - he was only 5’10 and 80kg

Re: Best value recruits
I can see Paton and Battle being mainstays in our B&F top 10 for many years to come. Excellent value for picks 39 and 46D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Thu 04 Aug 2022 10:04am
Paton & Battle whilst reasonable picks do not fit the criteria IMO when compared with Wilkie, Marshall, Sinclair, Membrey etc.

He was born in StKilda in the 1920’s.
My old man that is.

Re: Best value recruits
Not sure how you measure toughness, but Ian Stewart was the toughest player I've seen-didn't go around flattening blokes, just totally fearless and put his head where others didn't- and won the ball more times than not

Apparently put other parts of his anatomy where he should not and that’s why Yabbie wanted him gone!

Re: Best value recruits
No it wouldn’t. There’s hundreds of threads on that topic. That was the point of this thread.
Jack Steele for a future second rounder was a good pick up. I think Windhager and Owens will be in the same category.

Re: Best value recruits
Met him at a 40th a few years ago. Over a few beers he talked about his love for the club and didn't have a bad word to say about Alves either. Actually mentioned he offered to go down and do goal kicking training ( around the time they hired Dixon) . Some there were keen but Dixon was bought in and everyone else was hands off. Best kick for goal i saw since pluggerterry smith rules wrote: ↑Sun 07 Aug 2022 2:39pmAh you stole my thunder
