What role does Ratts have in deterring the list?

Post: # 1903762Post shanegrambeau »

How much is Ratts’s fault that we have such a broken team at the moment?

Our list isn’t great, arguable not even ‘good’. But how much can we hold Ratts responsible?

I would say very little, no?

I agree. I think he can coach and is the right person for job - at least for now.

The list is not good. That’s not his fault. We stuffed some high end draft picks and traded away too many picks for not much in return. It can’t be sheeted home to him.

Funny thing is most of us supporters seemed pretty happy with our list last year and then after adding Higgins and Crouch were very very happy

Unfortunately we have been crunched badly in areas we could least afford to be hit

Not being able to replace Carlisle as a 200cm intercepting CHB has been catastrophic

Injuries and issues with ruck/forwards - Roma/Paddy even more so

Webster has done ok but Paton was one of the best lock down defenders in the league ....... gone

Gresh as a dynamic clearance mid ...... gone

Zac Jones ditto

Gifting games to old, overhill, past their prime, slow warriors has got to stop ..... doesn't matter what experience they bring because at the moment even that ain't helping and its clearly adding nothing to the playing group

Clavarino & Connolly have to come in to bring a fresh aspect - time to see what they can do

I would even try Coff forward - fairly sure he kicked 5 one TAC game playing for Northern

Try Long forward as well and tell him to run around and cause havoc

The playing group needs to be invigorated and the coaches need to earn their money and get inventive and not die wondering ...... and not half way through a game ....... from the first bounce against North

As mentioned on another post

Our list is very good up to player 13-16 but after that it’s a black hole. The lack of 27-32 year old leaders is killing us. They should have been

Jake Carlisle
Jack Steven
Dylan Roberton
Ben McEvoy
Dan Hannebery

Plus the many number of picks wasted 2008-2015...guys picked in those years are guns at other clubs now.

Every team has injuries, some more than us!

Funny, with a worse list it was always Richo’s fault??

We get pasted by 120 points
With Crouch, Steele, Ross, Ryder, Membrey, King, Howard, Battle, Hill, Higgins, Butler, Clark, Wilkie, Billings, Sinclair

That is not a group of AFL players that should go down by 120

And there’s no accountability?!

I remember us going down to the hawks by 140 odd in 2014
But we had 4 first year players in the team, we starting a full rebuild and Hawthorn were in the middle of a 3 peat

We won a final last year, and also beat that same team during the H&A by 7 goals. That same team is now the premiership favourite.

I think we are a good team in terms of talent.

Why they stopped trying last night half way through the first quarter, and did so against Richmond, Port and Essendon as well, is a question that I, and many others would like to know the answer to.

Good post
You’re right no one could foresee the injuries but it does show we have overrated our list or at least we thought we had the depth to get away with injuries....facts are we don’t
I’m sure they expected not to have to rely on McKernan but here we are....
It also shows losing picks an$ not bringing kids through means we now pay a list gap price...
So it’s mini re build time ......we need to get back in the draft accept we are 2-3 years at least off challenging with this current core coming through (Clarke Coffield Bytel Byrnes Paton King Marshall etc)...... not necessarily Billings or Steele
We need to find some midfield class with run and imo bring B King in (we need him or Max at CHF and FF)
We are also a FB short imo and genuine ruck options to support Marshall
There’s a lot to do

We didn't stop trying half way through the first quarter yesterday as fairly sure we had over 10 inside 50s in the 2nd half of that quarter

It was only after the gumby nerd ump gave the 50m in the last 30 secs of the first quarter after Bruce had elbowed our defender in the throat .... followed by the 2-3 Dog goal free kicks paid to start the 2nd it was then we stopped playing

1 goal down to over 5 goals down in the blink of an eye = Saints players hearts bursting from their chests and running down Spencer St to be run over by the no. 96 tram .

Some of the most humiliating thrashings in club history this season and it's not even half over.

Coming after a finals year.

Coaches are demonstrating an inability to get between the players' ears.

Injuries are an excuse for honourable losses, not dishonourable ones.

The Dogs bat deep with a quality midfield and they have finals experience all over the ground, mature players, and a very good coaching set up. They have been in awesome form this year

Even though it was close in the early part of that first quarter, you could sense that it was going to be a tough ask to beat them

They were more inaccurate than us and had double the inside 50's early in the game. Then that rubbish free from a bloke who is keen on paying early frees to the Dogs in front of goal to 'get one back' for his fraternity ...Good on you fucknuckle!!
The players felt like the world is against them (what with everything that happened against the Cats and all our injuries...and Paddy taking leave) and it's hard to keep motivated when things aren't going right.

I switched over to the other match on Foxtel midway through that second quarter. I knew it wasn't going to be our day

What's the difference if you lose by 50 or you lose by 110? The problem is that you have fans who have made the effort to attend the game and you can't dish up that s*** to your members and supporters

This encapsulates our problems.

No CHB and no CHF without Carlisle/Marshall. It means we are bereft of any structure around which to build.

Maybe Battle CHB and Coffield forward. Coff’s too small for CHF, but he is a nice mark and a smart footballer despite recent form.

No Gresham/Jones equals very little dash and flair in the guts.

Maybe Clark into midfield to add some creativity. Is Higgins fit enough to run through the middle? Even Butler. He’s got plenty of leg speed that he’s not using because he’s not getting a sniff of it up forward.

It’s all just shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic I guess as the season is going down and in fact is already sunk.

But we can at least try to address the obvious issues as best we can.

We will find out Thursday night.

He clearly wants Coffield and Long in the starting 22 but got to the end of his tether with them.

He has given Hill a hall pass and I bet he has wondered about the wisdom of that recently.

Others will go this week. This week's selection non negotiable won't be intrinsic talent and reputations or structure it will be attitude shown in the floggings we have been handed. I hope for some surprises. President has given the green light to be ruthless rather than pragmatic - pick for the longer term, pick to embarrass and see what the big heads are made of, fight back, if they can.

Hip hip f***** hooray. Finally someone gets it! We are not a top 4 team and we certainly don't have the quality depth or the money or the resources of the rich clubs

Whether we are challenging for a top 8 spot or whether we are building for the future this should always be the policy.

Why does the club get players who have retired and delisted by other clubs?
They believe they can see something that other clubs cannot, and they mistakenly think their coaches can magically extract the best from a player.

You know which ones I mean.

More than 10 inside 50s for 1.1.7. Hmm. Maybe that's why we stopped. Bit of a momentum killer. I have excused these performances before myself, but at the end of the day we fielded a side which we believed would be competitive and fell very short.

Losses by 111 points must never be accepted. I remember 1979, 1985, 1986, 2000, 2001 and 2014 very well, and I don't want to sit back, watch some players get rich while my football team and it's supporters get humiliated. Three losses by 75 points + in the first ten matches is a real 1985 job and I don't want the next twelve matches to follow in the same vein.

Not exactly. They didn't earn that finals berth. They got in because Essendon were suspended from finals. We earned our finals berth.

Ratten will be gone by the end of 2022 at this rate.

Who are all these players who wanted to come to us because of the coach?
