Oscar Clavarino

Post: # 1902769Post Wayne42 »

Is Oscar Clavarino going to make it as an AFL player or will he get delisted.

He was pick #35 in the 2017 Draft, he is 21 years old,196cm and 85kg but hasn't played a game.

Jordan Butts for Adelaide was picked up in the 2018 Rookie Draft at pick #39, he is 21years old, 195cm and was 80kg, but is now over 90kg, he has played 11 games for the Crows, as a Key Defender.

Is it because Oscar is undersized weight wise or is it because he isn't good enough which means another wasted pick by the Saints or
his development at the Saints has been poor, especially in comparison to Butts.

it's a familiar tale, unfortunately.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Unfortunately I think Oscar is another failed draft choice by the club, he is simply not strong or skilled enough to play a key defensive role.

Our trading has been pretty good but in the last 10 years, our drafting has been terrible.

Not sure he will make it, like a lot of others.

He seems to be going pretty well at Sandy this season.

His strength is he has got very good hands and reads the ball well in flight.

Is it worth trying him forward?
He's had a couple of runs there for Sandy.

196cm guys who catch it well don't come around everyday, I hope they can develop him.

The problem Clav had early was durability and also holding his ground.
I get the feeling when Wilkie came along and now that we have Highmore, Clav went down the order.
Even Battle, Webster and Coffield are ahead, as far as the third tall defender goes. Is he capable of building his body into being a KPD, not sure.
Unless he is mobile enough to lead and mark effectively, I dont see much hope for him as a forward target.

Why is it ok for other clubs to have players in the 2nds for 4 or 5 yrs. Have a look at Collier Dawkins. High draft pick just played his 3rd game

.....
Durability ?
You mean he is good for the first effort, not so much the second, third...?
-or his tank is small? Runs out of puff?
-or his body is fragile? Prone to injury?
- Mental?

Holding his ground?
-Rag dolled, bumped off his line easily?

Are all these marks he is taking contested or cheapies? Collecting kick-outs from behinds?

Correct. We play them to early and they are exposed and thrown to the wolves give them time to develop and their a wasted pick and not up to it.

He has been injury prone Shane or he was in his early development, he got close to selection a few times only to be set back by injury.
As an intercept defender he depends on an uncontested run at the ball in order to be effective, typically as a loose defender or as third tall off his man.
In the VFL, the opportunity to intercept mark is greater than in the AFL due to less pace and skill in the game.
As a forward, he will need to be able to present and receive the ball as a target, with a 194-200cm, 90-100kg key defender on your ass, this is not an easy thing to do.
He needs this season in the VFL for mine and a big uninterrupted off season to develop more strength. Im.not sure his speed and agility is a strength.

Who was he going to get in ahead of??

N.Brown
J.Carlisle
J.Battle (who performed well in ‘19 as a KD)
C.Wilkie
D.Howard

All players have performed well as Key Defenders

Clavarino is more a 2nd defender, not enough agility or run that Wilkie/Highmore/Coffield can play in that 3rd role.

Really, it’s just a matter of better players in front of him!

Carlisle can’t even get a run as a key back

He was brilliant in the intra club game in 2018, but unfortunately badly busted his ankle in the final minute of that game.
He's never really recovered from that. Maybe difficult mentally.

Maybe he’s a slow burn?

He a third round pick key position player. Never really expected him to come straight in.

Its more about what they show at VFL level. Clavarino is good when the ball is kicked high on top of his opponent, because he has long reach and reads the ball well in the air. Ask him go physically one on one or defend a strong leading opponent and he gets found out very quickly.

Sadly for Clavarino he just doesnt have the physique to make it at the top level. Whether thats just genetics or he simply hasnt worked hard enough to develop his body I dont know?

Joyce is older, fitter and stronger than Clavarino at this stage

Put him on the Tom McDonald red meat diet..(or that Port Adelade player full forward dude, with standard Ned Kelly-meets-Colonel Sanders beard.

He becomes a strong red-blooded meat eating beast..
..and a fantastic utility for us?

Or he grows a beard and plays in the seconds.

We should be able to stash him on the rookie list for another two years, unless the league put some stipulations on those players being dumped onto the rookie list at the end of last year. If he was still on the senior list, I'd say he'd be very little chance of getting another contract. The fact he's not may help him, unless the club has completely given up on him.

Seems just a matter of finding his competitive advantage in this side. Oscar has always been a defender (?) and I guess Coff is ahead at the moment, however maybe as a tall fwd pocket or whatever that position is now.

It seems like Clav doesn't have the athleticism to be a rebounding third tall and he doesn't have the strength/physicality to be a key defender. Maybe he could fill in for Wilkie but we have Highmore, Joyce and even Coffield vying for that spot.

Joyce looked like a T-34 tank in those games..stood up like a concrete beast. Wasn't exactly a ballerina skill wise I guess.

Wasn't he picked at CHB in the 2017 TAC team of the year? With B Paton, Coff and Hunter Clark.

Starting, hey. Not interchange.

I wonder if Mr 'They're hurting, trust me' can shed some light on his journey

2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn
