Rules for some and rules for others

When Long bumped Darcy the ball was at his feet and Long was actually bending over to collect

The Richmond player had his hands on the ball when Duckwood came in and bumped him in the head

Selwood, Judd, Ablett, Fyfe all handed GOOGF cards for the duration. Drawcards, press darlings. Hawkins and Fritsch, serious benefit of no doubt given. Football tribunals seem ever conflicted, muddled headed and arbitrary. A lot must go on in the background and old allegiances/prejudices weigh heavy. Many decisions defy logic and justice. Misplaced mercy randomly distributed seems to be the go. Stuff the victims of violence and fouls.

Long needed a couple of timely jolts/suspensions to get him to pull his head in.
Not sure that any lessons have been learned ... he continues to be undisciplined and selfish (giving away 50 metres, etc..).
He must be a frustrating player to coach.

Shai Bolton has probably been Richmond's best player this year ... but we preferred Long, of course.

At the risk of being obvious...
Baker vs Johnson (compare that to Rooey damaged shoulder vs Scott bros)
Hall vs Maguire

2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn

With any luck Duckhead will be a braindead muppet eating through a straw by the time he is forty.

Will then have plenty of time to reflect on all those head high frees he induced.
Might buy him a washable bib inscribed with "Karma".

Look I hate Selwood as much as the next man... personally I reckon he’s one big step towards the game being ruined the way that people can’t really go hard at the contest without others drawing frees...

But geeeeeeeez that was a bit much

I guess Justin Longmuir and Damien Hardwick, don’t know anything about football, tackling & technique? Last night on Fox360
both said Selwood was not at fault and had nothing to answer for.
Hardwick said it was the poor technique of his young player that caused the hit, and he had spoken to the player about it. Longmuir agreed and said players are taught nowadays not to approach a contest in the manner the Richmond player did.

The problem is that umps pay frees to players ducking their head and moving into the opposition player.
Longmuir and Hardwick were saying it is dangerous and should not be rewarded by umps. Selwood did not endanger himself by turning his body stepping over the football.
He still knew his hip would hit the head of the Richmond player - I think Selwood's act was dangerous while accepting the Richmond player should not of led with his head.
Umpires should not encourage players to lead with their head by paying them the free unless the opposition player purposely forces his momentum towards the player with his head down.
Umps, by paying these frees will see another broken neck.

Daryl Baldock used to say "never put your head somewhere where your bum will fit".
Selwood did exactly that. Turned his body to protect the head and won the footy in the process.
If you go up for a mark and raise your leg with a bent knee (not an outstretched leg like Toby Greene) and a player runs head first into your knee, should they get a free kick?

Take the players involved and the bias out of the equation and look at the actions. No free kick there at all.

Yes, exactly (let's be unbiased for a moment).
And Selwood didn't collect him with his shoulder and/or hip - Selwood had turned sideways (as you've mentioned) and his opponent's head went into his rib cage, which is much softer and more of a shock-absorber (also Selwood could have just as easily bruised his own ribs or even broken a rib in the process).
Selwood's focus was on the ball - and there was no deliberate attempt to hurt his opponent - that was obvious even in slow motion.

Except the Richmond player clearly got to the ball first and had his hands on the ball first

Free kick everyday of week at the very very minimum

Selwoods action was no different to that of Longs except Darcy didnt have his hands on the ball unlike the Richmond player who did ..... unfortunately for Long the ball was kicked off the ground away from him before he could pick it up ..... even then the MRP still would have nailed him

Selwoods hit to the Tiger players head was reckless knowing the Richmond player was standing over the ball and it could have broken his neck

Long 3 weeks

Duckwood a kiss on the dick

My gripe is not so much with Selwood but umps who pay frees to players ducking their head and moving it into stagnant opposition players..
This encourages head ducking....many afl players are recklessly attacking the contest for a free and the umps are rewarding this reckless action.

+1

Well said. All these idiots saying it's the correct way to approach a contest are forgetting that this wasn't a contest to win the footy. The Richmond bloke already had his hands on the ball

If a player is late to a contest then any contact high should be a free. If the player late to the contest is risking injury to the player who already has his hands on the footy it should be reportable.

The AFL is full of it and takes us for fools. Aussie rules has always been about "putting your head over the footy" but not at the risk of someone breaking your neck
