Seven Years Ago Today

Post: # 1899749Post Beno88 »

Saturday 3rd May - 1:45pm - MCG

Hawthorn 27.13.175
St Kilda 4.6.30

A putrid, freezing, wet afternoon. Hawthorn were at the peak of their powers, and we'd just begun an 18 game streak where we'd win just one game.

It was the biggest defeat I've ever witnessed, and the fifth worst in club history. In context, it was arguably St Kilda's worst ever performance when you consider it was a side including Riewoldt, Hayes, Montagna, Steven, Dempster, Schneider, Geary & Gwilt. And the conditions shouldn't have seen 20 goals kicked between two sides, let alone 27 by one.

It's probably best summed up by the fact Ryan Schoenmakers kicked as many goals as our entire team.

I remember walking out of the MCG that day thinking how small and pathetic our club had become. They wiped us away as if we were nothing, and their supporters were as smug as always. It felt as though we'd never beat Hawthorn again.

So regardless of how bad Hawthorn were on Saturday, or who they had out, how sweet it is seven years on to belt them, and to have won 4 of our last 5 against them. I don't like saying I hate anything, but I ******* hate Hawthorn.

(It was) Seven years ago today...
Sergeant Richo taught the team to play....
They were playing to a new game style...
Long bombs to make the forwards smile...
So may I introduce to you....
The team that's caused you all these tears...
Sergeant Richo's Lowly Saints Club Team..

We're Sergeant Richo''s Lowly Football club...
We aim to move the football slow...
Sergeant Richo''s Lowly Football club...
Sit back and let the four points go...
Sergeant Richo''s Lowly, Sergeant Richo''s Lowly...
Sergeant Richo''s Lowly Football club...

It's pleasing to coach here...
I'm certainly no dill...
You're such a great supporter base...
We'd like to play at home each game...
We'd love to play at home...

I don't really want to give and go...
I prefer to move the ball real slow....
That the ball will be delivered long...
And I wont believe the game plans wrong...
So let me introduce to you....
Pick one the only "Paddy Mac"....
And Sergeant Richo's Lowly football club....

It was a bad afternoon.

Didn't Geary break his leg or arm?

Dislocated elbow I think it was. And it was his 100th game.

When are we gonna belt a struggling team by over 100? Only when that happens will we be serious contenders.

Dunno about contenders, but 69 points with 19 more shots is pretty good.

Nothing could be as bad as enduring "THAT" loss to Collingwood in 79.
