What is happening with Membrey?

Post: # 1858310Post shanegrambeau »

Our 188cm marvel has been rather low profile of late.
Any ideas, hypotheses?

With chat about Mr. Battle up forward I’m curious.

I think we're just not relying on him as much as we have in previous seasons, we've got a few more options up forward now.

Though to be fair the delivery into the forward line last night was trash, long bombs 95% of the time, which doesn't suit him. I assume they must have seen this as a weakness of the GC defence or something.

GC did their homework on him?
Watched lots of video to see how he sets up for a mark?
He often takes marks on a wing, not sure if he does that to evade opponents, but yeah he's been quiet

The Dud has a point, we're bombing into F50 like we used to, except now we have Winx to take marks as well as the freak Butler who breaks the hearts of defenders by kicking ridiculous goals 🤗

It’s odd...

He’s way down on goals and yet I’m not the least bit bothered or concerned about it.

Feel like bobbed you’re in the PA game when needed... is working a bit higher up the ground... dragging good defenders away.

Reckon he’ll exploit a bad much up soon

Agree. They need to lead. Even when there is no space in which to lead. I saw Ryder/Marshall/King/Membrey all flying against each other at various times last night.

Delivery into the forward line is an issue for every club, clubs can plan but opposition defences offer a fair circuit breaker. They need to play to worst case scenario, poor delivery, quality defenders, ground balls etc.

I think Members not getting as much of it is a good thing. We have won 7 games without a huge input. In the meantime, he learns and evolves to become an exceptional player that is vital to our structure.

Interestingly, a certain horse trainer who goes by the name 'Denis Pagan' had something to say about this on SEN today. He said, clubs should encourage long kicks (I immediately thought of Savage) into risky 50/50s in the forward 30 and train their crumbers specifically for these types of set-ups. He conceded that his view is probably 'too old-school' for the current way of thinking. With Butler and co....start to wonder. And Milney..how many gotchyas did he collect that way?

Exactly, as someone mentioned in another thread, the chaos kick (by Hind) into the forward line is the next best kick to hitting a forward on the tit.

The less time defenders have to set up & the more they have to defend from 15 metres the better it is for the side that is attacking.

The only type of perfection that is guaranteed is chaos.

Correct. But it only works if it’s done fast or to a reasonably even contest.

Kicking it long to a 3 on 1 doesn’t have the effect

This is true but if it's your only option, don't kick a drop punt. Any time the defence is nervous is a good time for the attacking side.

What's annoying is that we had plays where kicked it to King who had 2 players on him, straight over the head of 3 Saints players who were by themselves, who were about 40m out ! Need to lower our eyes occasionally. And if we are going to kick it to King then one of our smalls needs to be there with him to crumb as he often gets it too ground. Our entries had a bit of 2018 about them.

Good insight!! Yes, indeed, it is quite possible that the ‘King-hubris’ factor is a ball that will be played and exploited.

Opposition know that we want to ‘over-subscribe’ to the King. Defense set up and are ready to pounce!

I am being naive here but anticipating a response.

King is blown way out of proportion by the ‘eminent’ status of Mathew Lloyd. That’s o our King, I refer too.

As a consequence, opposition teams will expend- over expend- resources on him. That’s why I am so curious about Membrey.

I am sure he will arrive!

Go Membrey,

Agree. If teams are going to double team King then we need to exploit it by having that free player being used and King being used as a decoy. It should mean we can create a loose player going forward. I'm sure Ratts will work it out soon enough.

Yes I was wondering the same , seems to be used on the wing as a intercept mark and a spare in the forward line his role has definitely been altered. He is a good set shot and mark so I’m sure he will get his chance. We are winning and he is playing so it’s a win.
Go Membrey

I don't think the forward line works well with King and Membrey together in there playing deep- lucky our crumbers are doing well. Maybe King is better being up the ground around the half forward area where he can get some space and use his marking better, and let Membrey stay deep, as he is not as comfortable up the ground.

When the ball goes to Winx the little guys know his multiple opponents can't out mark him so the ball is coming to ground.
Our little guys have lead their opponents up the field then they swoop in for close shots on goal.
A very simple strategy.

If it does not work they can go to plan B - kick it to a one on one like Membrey but he will be kicking from further out.

When we get Ben, our two Kings will be able to swap between centre half forward and full forward.

Not as comfy?
He takes a few grabs out on the wing as a link player. He runs well so his opponent is usually spent and finds it hard to jump up to contest the mark

Not sure what it is about this year but the entire competition is suffering from a lack of output from the tall forwards. The leading player in the Coleman only has 24 goals after 10 games hardly colemanesque.

Maybe not so much what’s wrong with membery, but what’s the go with key forwards.

Games are shorter. Players are fresher for longer and - with four on the bench - can easily flood back lines.

Flooded back lines - no room to move - are the mortal enemy of tall forwards.

Congestion is bad enough in a normal season, let alone ones with 16 minute quarters.

This has been a problem for some years now. Who was the last to kick 100? Buddy?

Not concerned about Membrey at all. We are the highest scoring team in the comp dont forget. Team balance in the Fwd 50 has never been better since the Grant Thomas days.
