I'm just having a look at the employees the club has hired in a Sales, Business Development roles. Some well qualified chaps in there - all have Football/Sports/Media backgrounds.

Need someone out of left field who is an absolute hunter. There's alot of smart cookies down at RSEA but they haven't been able to reduce the debt, so I'd be doing a cleanout of the sales team.

The following paragraphs confirm my contention that on-field success is a major factor in increasing club revenues:

"The 2019 premier, Richmond, came a clear second on the revenue ladder. Similar to West Coast, the club’s on-field success has driven financial growth. Victoria’s other large clubs occupy the next six spots. While these clubs’ position on the 2019 AFL ladder varied throughout the year, all teams in this group are financially supported by large membership bases. Although Collingwood posted a significant revenue decline over 2018-19, this result was due to the club’s transition out of the pokies and gaming market, rather than a decrease in core revenue. Collingwood’s average home-game attendance grew by 16.9% in 2019. Carlton’s encouraging list and improved play brought Blues fans back to home games in droves, with a remarkable 47.1% increase in average attendance during the 2019 season. While I don't have an issue with suggestions that St Kilda should find additional sources of revenue, and I don't doubt that the club's Brains Trust is working hard to come up with new ideas, decisions by the club's Board and senior management to improve the player list in order for the team to achieve success indicate that they believe it to be crucial for the team to become a serious finals contender.

Why not, kennett has pocketed $$$$$ from state pokies / casino then hypocritically ran beyond blue another personal income source. Hawthorn have 80 mil in the bank.

That's the only recipe for a financially successful AFL football club.

The big clubs have a diverse investment portfolio and revenue streams.

Large membership numbers alone do not create anywhere near enough revenue to sustain an AFL club. And many of the memberships sold by those clubs are $5 packages for dogs and cats and unborn humans for for the sole purpose of artificially inflating the membership numbers to improve the clubs bargaining power for primetime TV slots and fixtures and advertising and sponsorship deals.

It's a new paradigm, what worked in the past may not work during a recession/depression.

It was interesting to hear the President defend suggestions we would be $20 million in debt by the end of 2020, and what was even more interesting about his spirited defence was a complete lack of assurance that he was working hard to create ideas for revenue generation to sustain the club.

I know someone who owns a massive private company that is a huge Saints fan/benefactor - COVID has stuffed that business though.

They could wipe a lot of debt themselves if they wanted to!
