RIP

Terrific career but will always be best remembered for that insane moment when a miscommunication or whatever caused him to miss the bus and miss a Prelim Final. Many versions of the story abound but perhaps the truth will never be known.

I was at Moorabbin the day he kicked a goal after getting a free inthe centre ruck - must have been an 80 metre torp - it was unbelievable - can’t find a clip of it on the internet but it’s out there

That's why I can't find it ! Memory is getting a bit hazy in my old age - that was also great !!

Sidey Bottom' still brings great memories - even just the ones that were him !

I remember him vividly as a player. Especially in one game against the 'Dogs in 1979 at the Western Oval.
Val Sidey.

I'll bet he's having a beer with another of my childhood heroes, old Swamp Fox, right now.

Thanks to my fellow Saintsational members for these tributes to Sidey. I too have very fond memories of his pivotal role in that amazing team that took us on such a roller coaster ride in 1978. We certainly were seen as wearing the black cowboy hats , but the toughness of that team was backed up by genuine skills . Sidey was tough and strong , but absolutely could play.

When so many players left at the end of 78, he was one of the few who excelled in the bleak 1979.

The falling out with Jezza was a great shame, but does not detract from the memories of a bloody good footballer.

RIP .

Great player, absolute and elite player. Brutal too when he needed to be. One of my favourites.

Sadly he was also along with Perovic and Greene sold off to other clubs to keep the Saints afloat. Cats reportedly paid about $100K to the Saints for him after approaching the Saints.

He hated that 'missing the bus' story...but as no-one saw it, he was probably next best remembered for being brained by a beer can flung by a crosseyed punter aiming for the umpire!

RIP Sidey. Great memories of your talent and toughness in a torrid time.

last time I have seen him was on the bleachers at a basketball match supporting his family, a son playing for Kalgoorlie at the time at Lakeside Lightning home court. He was very vocal then too.

Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

You need to protect the ball handler to increase posession efficiency
