Has the club called a press conference or is this just more scuttlebutt and speculation?

It’s very sad for both players, I hope they have great support around them to cope with the transition in their lives.

For our team, it offers great opportunity for others. I think the finality will help in some way to avoid ongoing distraction. It could help galvanise the squad.

That’s an odd thing to say...

Just thinking all our current injury woes are at least happening now and not when we’re actually challenging for finals.

Not odd at all - you seem to revel in the negative aspects of the Club - Just an observation and an opinion

I might be wrong but I am sure I am not alone with that opinion

If you are a supporter I personally get the feeling that you aren't a very suppprtive one - again just an opinion

Roberton steps away from footy
Chris Vernuccio

Glenn McFarlane

St Kilda defender Dylan Roberton will step away from AFL football for the 2019 season in an effort to find an answer to the heart irregularities that have derailed his career.

But the 27-year-old hasn't given up on a return to the game, saying he wants to explore all medical options in an effort to get to the bottom of his problems.

Roberton collapsed dramatically during a game against Geelong last year and missed the rest of the 2018 season.

But he was given a medical clearance to return to football and played two JLT games this season.

But the club's review of data from an internal device in Roberton’s chest showed a period of irregularity before it activated at the conclusion of Sunday’s JLT clash in Ballarat.

He spent that night in hospital after feeling "wonky".

Roberton said he would take the time away from football to seek greater clarity to his heart irregularities, the cause of which is still unknown.

“It’s extremely frustrating because I physically feel fine, and if you exclude those two incidents, I’m as healthy as I’ve ever been,” Roberton said.

“Unfortunately, I need to listen to the professionals and take some more time out of the game.

“I still have a great desire to play at the highest level and want to make sure we look at every possibility.

“Given the club’s ability to add a player to the list, I wanted to make the call while they still had time to do so.”

St KIlda coach Alan Richardson praised Roberton's courage and his decision.

“Robbo is an incredibly selfless player, and nothing speaks more to that than his want to continue to play on and contribute to our group. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen this year,” Richardson said.

“The club, our medical staff, coaches and the players will support him through this period and with whatever comes in the future.

“Whether that’s working with the coaching staff again like he did last year, I’m sure Dylan will still play an important role for us in 2019 and be there to support his teammates.”

“We, like him, are hopeful a solution to his condition can be found and we can see him in Saints colours once again.”

Making the decision to step away for the rest of the season now will also allow the Saints to potentially add another player to their list.

I would say I’m probably more objective than most on here, which I wouldn’t call negative, and I am quite happy to not have rose coloured glasses permanately fixed to my face.

I'd be interested to know what a year out of footy will achieve, given he's practically had a year out already and feels fine. Is this some kind of retirement by stealth? If so, what does it achieve?

Still waiting nervously on Paddy.

Yes
I'd like to know if his tests have shown anything
If the doctors don't know perhaps he may have a touch of the vapours .

Roberton is sitting out the season but given the nature of his illness it is on the balance of probabilities likely he will retire.

He is a huge loss and will be extremely hard to replace. So very sorry for him but his health must come first . Clearly his collapse last year and feeling unwell after the recent Practice match is a sign of a serious heart condition. I think you can safely infer he is sitting out 2019 on the advice of his cardiologist. It is a decision that won’t have been taken lightly.

As for Paddy, five concussions in eight years speaks for itself. Apologies if I have those stats around the wrong way. Again his health and welfare has to be the number one consideration . He must retire from the game. It is that simple. Heart breaking for everyone.

I hope we can pick up the pieces as a footy club and have a real crack at improving on 2018. That is all we can hope for.

From what I've read, it seems they downloaded data from his implant, and saw an irregularity in his heartbeat, and the cardiologists might have said based on tests etc, there's a strong chance it could happen again at some stage.
As Robbo said, it's best for the club if he pulls out in time for them to grab a guy via SSP (deadline today)
rather than risk him having a recurrence.

During the year, he'll keep training at top pace, and the docs will assess how he's travelling.

Won’t be a popular opinion... Love Roberton and reckon we really felt his loss last season but I feel like he should just call it.

He’s got what, 3 years left at best?

Why put himself through all of this and the risk that comes with it for the sake of a few years.

Call it while he has his health and the club can move I’m opposed to another year or two tests, delays and ridk

Can he play at Sandy or a lower grade?
I just wonder if they monitored at a slower pace they may be able to diagnose the irregularity better

Need to look at the positives; he spent most of last year in the coaches box and will do so again this year which is as good as serving a coaching apprenticeship. If he doesn't play again, and I dare say that would have to be on the cards, keep Dylan on in a coaching role.

Roberton is our best player, he proved that last weekend, not that he had to. Its a bugger all round. He must be so frustrated. Such a fabulous talent, in his prime, feels good, but can't play.
