Priority Pick

Post: # 1743859Post rodgerfox »

Surely given two posters have indicated from ITK sources that the club believes our issues relate to our talent (or lack there of) - we will need to ask for a Priority Pick?

Is that for the lack of talent in the coaches or for the players?

How the hell will we get a priority pick when we almost made finals last 2 years? We have just had one bad season!!! If Brisbane, Carlton or Gold Coast weren't given one after years of shitful how do we get one?

Carlton and Brisbane both have stars on their list.

Since 2011, the last time we played finals (which is the same year Carlton last played, here are the stats between us, Carlton and Brisbane (I left out the Suns because obviously they were a brand new club so their stats are skewed)....
Saints Blues Lions
Average %90.8 89.6 78.2
Average Wins Per Season8.37.65.9
Total Wins 66.0 61.0 47.0

So we're averaging less than 1 win per season on average during the same period as Carlton, and only 1.2 better Percentage on average.

We've only had 5 more wins than them since we both last played finals.

Now look at the lists going forward...

Brisbane have Zorko, Beams, Rich, Martin, Cameron and Christenson. Then they have Hipwood, Rayner, McStay, McCluggae and Andrews coming through - plus a bunch of Lewis Taylors, Mitch Robinson's etc.

Carlton are worse off, but have Kreuzer, Murphy, Docherty, Ed Curnow. Then they have legitimate superstars in C Curnow and Cripps already there, before we've had a chance to determine whether any of the other dozens of young guys they've brought in will be any good.

Then there's us....a club that apparently internally, have conceded that our list is simply no good. We have Carlisle. Then we have Gresham. Then we have a couple of of kids that look like they'll be good...hopefully.

I genuinely think that based on that, we are by far the most in need of a priority pick if anyone is. A priority pick is less about what you achieved in the past, but more about you out of the s***. And given that our list is no good after building it for 5 years - we are absolutely going to need it.

Yes Roger, agree. No good applying the medicine after the patient is terminal; and the Saint's breathing is shallow right now, like its list. In the unlikely event that the self interest response from the other clubs was put aside and the Saints was approved as a world heritage listed priority pick basket case, would not the AFL decision makers demand a sound business plan and a credible (to the AFL) crew to implement it plus a pound or two of flesh. But perhaps the Club does need external involvement/expertise to get it out of the bloody minded rut it seems to be in i.e. next season will be better Charlie Brown [repeat]. And of course there is the stigma of charity.....one of the pounds of flesh could be that we would become the interstate away draw specialists. But what doesn't kill a club can only make it....(?). If I had the casting vote I would suffer the stigma, the club being held by the hand management/coaching wise and an unfair draw if it meant we could play finals in two years - the priority pick would be just the cream, finals the cake.

Good grief. We have as much chance and/or justification of getting a priority pick as we have of making the finals this year. Close thread.

We don't need a priority pick, we need to get the picks we have right.

We need a recruitment department that is not impressed by under 18 performance but can spot talent and determination that will develop into elite AFL players.
Playing under 18s is way different to AFL.

Dustin Martin, Paddy Dangerfield, Nat Fyfe and other superstars are not only talented they believe they can impose their will on a game.
All would be Brownlow medallists ooze with determination.

They are also highly skilled.
Their kicks hits the target, their handballs under pressure hit the target, they have always done so even as juniors.

Koby Stevens early retirement due to extraordinary circumstances - is that grounds for a priority pick?

2nd or 3rd rounder - due to his age experience and that he was first choice 22?

Ok I am deluded but is it worth enquiring?

Have there been any other best 22 players that have retired at such an early age due to concussion related issues?

I agree with this. We should get a priority pick for players that are forced to retire early such as Stevens and Dempster last year.

Dempster was 33.

Do Adelaide get one for Curtly Hampton?

Hawks for Cyril?

Tiges for Shaun Hampson?

Dogs for Clay Smith?

Dempster was too old and his future impact was negligible

Melbourne got special compensation for Troy Broadbridge who lost his life in the 2004 tsunami but I think it was a pick after the National Draft and before the Pre-season draft - Shannon Motlop

Port got nothing for John McCarthy in way of compensation after his unfortunate passing

Now of course dying is a little different than retiring however his career has effectively been ended by a non-rehabable (if that's a word) affliction unlike an ACL

Actually we have no chance but no harm in asking

Can you list anymore examples

You are like an attack dog

We are just spit balling ideas

Can you tell me how many players have retired in the peak of their career or early in their career from concussion issues - Justin Clarke?

Should serious concussion which have long term health implications be regarded differently than muscular skeletal injuries which can usually be rehabbed?

As I said just spit balling - sure it is unfortunate but anymore unfortunate retirements and the AFL just might start to reconsider ....... very unlikely though

We have no chance as we were meant to be knocking on the finals door this season. We have had a mare of a season and that is it. We are not as bad as Carlton or Suns for that matter and if the Blues don't want one then we sure as hell wont get one.

So Carlton have Cripps, Murphy, Kreuzer, Curnow and Pick 1 this year, and are 18th.....and are getting a Priority Pick. Carlton have publicly state that their list is good, and it just needs time.

We have.....pick 5 this year, and are 15th. We have publicly stated that our list is rubbish.

Right now, I know who I'd rather be.

We have more justification than Carlton.
It would be an absolute farce if Carlton were awarded one (I love the FB page dedicated to demanding the club request a pick, champagne comedy, quite literally)...watch them get it. I'd be embarrassed if we did.

PS: Their last finals appearance was 2013.
