Joyce debuting

Post: # 1738654Post parkeysainter »

Below snippet from saints website. Good words from Richo. It sounds like the Irish fella has really deserved it.

---------------

Upon revealing to Joyce that he was to make his debut, senior coach Alan Richardson reassured him that his captivating story had nothing to do with his senior selection.

“I’ve been involved with a few Irish boys over the years, and you came in as green as anyone that I’ve worked with, so it’s a real credit to you,” Richardson said.

“You’re in because you’ve earnt it. It’s not a novelty thing, it’s not a ‘righto, we haven’t quite had the results we’re after, so let’s just have a look at the list’…that’s not the case.

“You’ve worked your backside off, you know, first in, last to leave, that sort of attitude, and it’s certainly got you this opportunity.”

Richardson also drew on Joyce’s exemplary work ethic both on and off the field.

“You’ve earnt the respect of your teammates, and that’s what I want,” he said.

“By the time we’ve finished on the MCG on Sunday, (I want) your teammates to look you in eye at the end of the game and know they can trust you.”

Darragh Joyce becomes just the third Irish-born player to represent St Kilda in VFL/AFL history, following Dermot McNicholl (3 games, 1990) and Colm Begley (1 game, 2009).

Assuming this is Richo's office...anyone else notice the large 66 team pic right next to him?

Congratulations to the lad.
About to become our second most successful Irish import in club history.

Thought Tommy Walsh would make it for a while, may well have if he rode out the journey.

Given there were several games Tommy starred for Sandy - he could quite easily have got a game. Ross Lyon had other ideas however. As it is Dermot McNicoll played 3 more games for the Saints than him.

Ross Lyon wouldn't play him until he learned to read the bounce of the ball, he never did.

Was super impressed with this kid when I saw him at Sandy a few weeks back.

Really took the game on and backed himself...

Zippy, disposal was reasonable. Hope he takes his chance... if he gets a fair chance at development including a few chances if he’s not up to scratch right away... ala the Mav Weller treatment, I reckon he’d be ok.

One joy this season has been our debutants (plus those who only previously had very few games like Long and Battle) both in the number we have blooded and in the quality of football they have shown.

Congratulations Darragh!

I'm surprised Ray Connellan hasn't played yet. He has pace to burn and can kick a goal.

Thought he did ok. Couple of stuff ups but to be expected. Got himself in some nice positions to intercept so he can read the play ok. Also couple of nice field kicks. Well done young fella. Luck of the Irish also helps.

With that sort of logic he shouldn't have ever played Milne after the GF draw

Apparently he's the great-great grandson of the brilliant modernist writer, James Joyce.

OK for a debut. He will now go back to Sandy much better for the experience and work harder to get back up. Ray Connelan may get a gig soon.

I don’t think that’s true.

But maybe we have links to John Gresham, Dan Brown and Mary Higgins Clark.

Just looking through some books in my bookcases, there could be links to many, great, great grandies, and grand pops and ma’s, also, aunties, uncles & cousins

Pulitzer Prizer recipient Robert Vance Bruce? The delightful Australian writer Mary Grant Bruce, could Josh claim her as a G G
Grand ma, ma?

Is Armo a cousin of British writer, poet & playwright Simon Robert Armitage.......... maybe DWOODROW could clear this query up?

Was Jack Sinclair’s form a little off at the beginning of this season as he was in mourning at the death of Unca, Clive John Sinclair? (I was in the UK in March and can recall reading of his passing!)

Did Caryl Phillips’ stirring writings on slavery and marginalised races inspire young Ed to do his off season travelling to undeveloped countries to help the underprivileged?

I wonder if Logan Austin is always having to explain that his GG grandma, is NOT Jane Austen the British novelist, but Jane Goodwin Austin, of the good ole USA?

Oh we can only dream that in the future Brandon White’s name will be as famous in annuls of AFL history as Great Great grand pop Patrick White’s name is to Australian Literature!

Now, was Great Auntie Ann Rice (famous for her novels The Vampire Chronicles) instrumental in young Bailey choosing the Saints over Carlton, because he loved her book (and tv show), The Feast of All Saints?

Douglas Freeman has been awarded 2 Pulitzer Prizes, can young Nathan out do this rellie with 2 Norm Smith Medal 🥈 in 2 winning Saint’s Grand Finals ? We can but dream.

I just hope Robert William Goddard is not the granddaddy of our luckless Goddard? A novel by R.W. Goddard may be a bad omen......... it’s titled ‘Beyond Recall’.
