Our 3rd largest comeback ever!

Post: # 1736864Post perfectionist »

Overcoming a thirty-one point at three quarter time, is our third largest comeback of all time. This means that I have now 'seen' the top three (two via TV and one live).

In order, there was the "Mother's Day" comeback at the SCG, R7 1994, when we were 38 points behind at three-quarter time and won by a point. Sydney actually kicked the first 7 points of the last quarter, so we "came back" from 45 points down. The game was famous for a few other reasons - all involving Tony Lockett. He kicked 11 goals. He also had a slight collision with Peter Craven. Craven was out for 14 weeks - Tony missed 9. The other thing about the game was that Sydney coach Ron Barassi made up his mind that he had to get Plugger to Sydney and so it came to pass.

The second biggest comeback also involved the Swans, but this time as South Melbourne. It was round 13 , 1962 at the Lake Oval. I was at that game. At three quarter time the scores were 9 goals 9 behinds to 3 goals 9 behinds - we were 6 goals down. I said some Hail Marys (I was 10). Allan Jeans moved state fullback Verdun Howell to full forward. He kicked three goals and we won by 17 points, keeping them scoreless. It was the last time religion delivered for me!

And then there is tonight's win at number 3.

Thought we were down by 48 against the Swans in the Sydney game.

We were 48 points down in the last quarter of that SCG match, not 45.

48 points down with about 12 minutes to go.

This is why the "deficit at 3-qtr-time" record is so misleading.

From memory we got as far as 51 points down in the third quarter and kicked the last two goals of that quarter. The lead got out to 48 points in the last.

We have been 55 points down at half time twice and won - Against Hawks way back in the olden days and the Bulldogs in 2015.
I was at a match at VFL Park when I was a kid in 1975 I think it was, and we were 45 points down at one stage, against Richmond (I'm pretty sure), and won.
And against Sydney in 1994 were 51 points behind at one stage and got up.
Tonight's win was great - to play most of the game 2 players down on the bench and to come back from 39 points to win was a great effort.

Third week in a row we've given up massive leads ( and come back in two of them) is something the coaching team and players will need to address, but for now enjoy the win.

Do you remember Round 6, 2015, Saints vs Bulldogs? We were 55 points down and won by 7. It's the 5th greatest comeback in AFL history; 3rd greatest comeback in a second half.

Also we did the same numbers, 55 point comeback against the Hawks in Round 2, 1937.

So this would be our 6th greatest comeback? Can anyone add any more?

Great comeback but let’s remember this was against a side at the start of the season many penciled us in to comfortably beat not scrape home against after being 40 down at some stages.....

It’s pretty difficult to have a great comeback without being significantly behind at some stage.

1985 Round 10 at Moorabbin v Essendon we were 44pts down (6.8) at 3 quarter time and staged a huge comeback against the reigning and eventual Premiers

We kicked 9.2 for the quarter and got within 3 pts before ther kicked the final 4 goals in the final 5 mins of the game (they kicked 6.2 for the quarter) - so 15.4 all up in a quarter of footy

It was a breathless comeback and an incredible quarter of footy but we just fell short of taking the lead before we ran out of steam - Plugger kicked 7 that day.

Who said the 80s were shiteful

Interesting to see that G Ablett had 27 disposals for us that day, and Morwood 23

Best comeback I ever saw live was at Princes Park in 1976 against Hawthorn. We were over 7 goals down in 3rd quarter, when ( I think ) Paul Callery got knocked out. I think it was friendly fire ( Cat Colling's knee? ) but we fired up and absolutely ran all over a pretty good team to win by 25 points.

I was at all three games. And it was 48 points.
