Sam Gilbert
Sam Gilbert should make it to 200 games and that is a hugely successful AFL career if you recruit a player and he makes that milestone. I have marvelled at his form of recent times. He has been excellent. Under his knees, running through lines, overhead marks and even some decent kicking he has been a top performing player. It wasn't always the case with him but an unsung hero in this team. His contract runs out at 31 his form though suggests he will go on.

My opinion of Gilbert keeps getting higher and higher. Unsung hero is a good term for him.

Re: Sam Gilbert
Following his 2008-2011 form I was a really huge fan of his but was equally disappointed with his performances over the 2012-2016 era...
Over that time IMO he was barely playing better than a GOP with a few excellent games now and then.
Really lost respect for him... in s playing sense. Pbly wouldn't have minded if he got cut last year.
Enter 2017 and he's almost back to his very best. Have been sooooooo impressed by his season to date. Close to our best player over 13 odd games. If not for Ross I'd say leading the B&F.
True utility who is basically playing as a link man and helping us win every contest he gets near.

Re: Sam Gilbert
He certainly plays better when he does not have to guard a 200cm monster.
Plenty of seasons left in him.
Will get even better when he learns to kick straight in a few years time !

Re: Sam Gilbert
Well Sam only had one out of bounds on the full, and one superb pass to an opponent, last night - so that's fantastic -I didn't even groan when he did that, because his great efforts this season makes those stuff ups pale into significance.
Go Sammy!!!

Re: Sam Gilbert
Even when he wasn't playing at his best I believe he was overly criticised it was clear to me he had the potential to do better and was certainly not the worst on ground during this time as some made out. At the end of the day great see any player fulfill his potential. Well done gilbo

Re: Sam Gilbert
I was stood behind the Saints race last night, and the bloke next me, and a couple of others put WAY more energy into bitching and whinging about Gilbert, Weller, and a couple of others than actually barracking FOR their OWN side! Hey, each to their own I guess, but it does sort of seem such a waste of energy. Sam does some fairly ordinary things during a game, but I'm in the same camp as saint6709 & Loris on this one. Gilbo has plenty of heart and his effort couldnt be faulted last evening.

Re: Sam Gilbert
He has height and agility which have been his strengths. His skills have been the problem. Skills against inferior teams always look better - I guess pressure may have something to do with that. As far as Mav is concerned, I'm afraid his tenaciousness does not make up for his deficiencies.thejiggingsaint wrote:I was stood behind the Saints race last night, and the bloke next me, and a couple of others put WAY more energy into bitching and whinging about Gilbert, Weller, and a couple of others than actually barracking FOR their OWN side! Re: Sam Gilbert
When he is at a contest you just know we are in with a good chance.
Whether it's on the ground, in a contested situation or a foot race or a one v one marking contest he is excellent.
Can't ask for too much from a player.

Re: Sam Gilbert
He and Roberton have both benefited hugely from having Brown and Carlisle in the team. They can play more attacking roles which they do so well.
An earlier response in this thread mentioned his ability to break lines. I think he does this as well as anyone on our list. If you break lines you create the extra number, or the overlap player, and in the era of zones it is one of the most important abilities a player can have.

He played well last night with only one out on full, magnifisaint wrote:And WellardsThe Fireman wrote:He's got cons vote ,:)
but he does that.
Second n 3rd efforts always outstanding, and if Skunk was half as competitive,
he'd have a massive impact.
Gilbo did well n always has a decent crack

He's a human wrecking ball. Leaves nothing out there and gives his heart and soul to our club. He's limitid in ability but you can never question his effort. Been outstanding this year and is judged too harshly imo.

Re: Sam Gilbert
I disagree with you that he is limited in ability... he may never have had elite disposal but his marking, ball winning, and run are potetnially in the elite category...8856brother wrote:He's a human wrecking ball. Re: Sam Gilbert
Not sure about unsung hero. He's more of a flawed player with a big heart for my liking. Very serviceable player who's capable of stoking the fire in the engine room. 200 AFL games is indeed a great achievement for any player. I think the first Saints 200 game milestone I saw was Trevor Barker in 1987. I thought that was phenomenal at the time.
