So what's our best 22 next season?

Post: # 1643980Post ctqs »

Anyone want to have a crack at our starting 18 and four interchange for next season or is it too early?

Still waiting for closure ... if you get my drift.

So try this, thru rose colored glasses:-

Gilbert Brown White
Roberton Carlisle Montagna
Riewoldt Armitage Acres
Billings Bruce Weller
Freeman McCartin Membrey
Hickey Dunstan Steven
Steele Ross Newnes Gresham

Apart from Gilbert, Montagna, Riewoldt, Armitage, Steven and Newnes what stands out - and sees us (and others passing comment on us) looking to September action once again?

It would appear to me that of such a side, only Brown is a "static" player with the rest all possessing line breaking capacities and/or a capacity to dominate matches and return positive results.

Plus there is flexibility.

The only deficiency is ruck support for Hickey, because there is no one I can leave out for Longer.

We develop the likes of Goddard, McKenzie, Webster, Wright, Rice, Lonie, Stevens and Pierce at VFL level and we have reserves such as the experienced Geary and Dempster.

And, if he wants to go on, I would keep Fisher on the Rookie List as a key defensive back-up whilst Goddard develops into a player to replace Brown.

B: Geary - Brown - Dempster

HB: Roberton - Carlisle - Newnes

C: Acres - Armitage - Riewoldt

HF: Billings - Bruce - Steele

F: Weller - McCartin - Membrey

R: Hickey - Steven - Ross

INT: Dunstan, Montagna, Savage, K Stevens

EMG: Sinclair, McKenzie, Lonie

Very very tricky.

We'll be very competitive but team lacks stars.

We reallly need Billings, McCartin, Ross, Acres and Gresham to become star AFL players for us to do anything

Ruck support is surely Carlisle with Brown now in the side.

I agreed with this until I noticed no Gresham. Tricky.

Not if Carlisle plays at CHB, there is not team in the league in this day and age that rests their 2nd ruckman in defence.

Monty may be a surprise; I wonder if the match committee will keep him in our best 22?
For- lots of quality possies, penetration, leadership
Against- keeping someone out- stifling development; retaining him isn't looking to the future?
It's a tough one and I don't envy the match committee

I would much rather have Webster than Monty.
Looking to the future, and I think Webster is a bit more of a contested ball winner than Monty.
Savage can do the Monty-style breaking of lines with long kicking.
Webster more valuable as a pressure player.
(I'm still foaming at the mouth over the bowling ball strike on 2 Carlscum players :P :D )

Montagna is in our best 22 still Wellard Saint.
I like Webster, McKenzie, Sinclair, Lonie and Brandon White a lot too plus plenty of others in emergencies.
Remember this side assumes no injuries at all, so lots of people named as emergencies will see plenty of senior action next year.
The good news is on paper we seem to bat a lot deeper next year.

I think Savage makes less mistakes, Montagna is a bit of a clanger king at half back.

The really good thing is that we have about 10 players sitting outside that best 22 who can come in and play a solid role. Lots of competition for those small defender roles.

In 2016 Joey averaged 1 clanger every 11.13 disposals and Savage 1 clanger every 11.22 disposals.

And how many more possessions did Montagna have over the season than Savage?

I must admit that I am a long way from "sold" on Savage - lacks a hard edge in the contest and too much of a receiver for mine.

Depending on what (particularly) defenders are looking to do with their disposals, I cut some slack.

There are times when it is the target not the disposer who requires the education.

Montagna was played in defence to check an opponent and nullify them, gain possessions and break lines with those possessions.

Obviously he can be caught out overhead (and, to digress but as a comparison, what really impressed with White in his one game was his ability to put body on body pressure in the contest including particularly overhead so he is very difficult to out mark one on one) but the fact he has re-invented himself to the benefit of team says it all.

All of our veterans we retained have committed to team and that is a credit to each of them - and probably spoke to their characters, characters which saw Richardson retain them in the first instance.

I trust they all enjoy the fruits of their commitment in 2017 because they all deserve it.

I see a time where neither Joey or Savage is best 22. 2018.

No but personally can't see much of a future for him now.
I also left Lee, Templeton, Shenton and Murdoch out of squad.
Nothing official or ITK about this, just my opinion on the ones that are on a knifes edge of remaining on list.
Remember we have bought in 3 trades, and also a minimum of 2 draftees will be selected so there are only a certain amount of spots on the Senior list.
