Half way through the year- The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Post: # 1621007Post stkfc1 »

Be interested in peoples opinion

Good- Ross, Hickey, Membrey, Steven, Roo, Savage, Mav all having great seasons.
Going with a new look forward line.
Gresham looks a player.
Paddy showing some great signs.

Bad- Still too much reliance on the old warriors in games but think this is slowly changing.
Lonie and Sinclair having no impact this year.
Expected more from Newnes, Webster and Billings this year. I was expecting Newnes to be having a similar breakout season to Ross for us. Webster showed some good signs last week so hope it continues.
Armo not as good as last year but still been pretty good.
Our aging backline (who have not disgraced themselves by any means) but its lack of run and inconsistent disposal is glaring compared to the top teams.

Ugly- Still having blowouts.
Our forward 50 entries and kicking skills in general.
Still haven't seen a really good 4 quarters of footy from us.

Ugly - the difference between our best and worst. The inconsistency within and between games. Bewildering. I hope they sort this out over the rest of the season.

Bit harsh on Newnes.

He's only averaging three touches a game less than Ross but spends significantly less time in the midfield.

His career average was 16.9 disposals a game prior to this season. This year it's 23.5. Pretty solid improvement.

Agree. I think that Newnes is having his best year ever. And not just his numbers, but just in how he has gone about his game and the quality of it.

He does tend to be a bit of a quiet achiever that often goes unnoticed.

Yeah probably am being a bit harsh . Guess I was expecting him to really stamp himself on games this year. A couple of BOGs for example would have been good. Understand his role can mean he's not always in the thick of it but was really hoping for him to tear a few games apart as I think he has it in him.

We need good clean ball use from half back...Along with Savage, he provides that and is a good link player in the transition from defence to attack.

THE GOOD
- Development of Ross, Gresham, Hickey, Acres, Paddy, Membrey
- Pushing North and Hawks right to the end
- Good responses after bad losses. Seems to be good team harmony and purpose
- Richo is good media performer and very even temperement win or loss
- Club very good with info and fan engagement
- Sandy's form shows we have depth
- Steven going to another level of leadership
- Win/loss pretty much on track where we should be

THE BAD

- Poor rotation of the squad. Fringe guys not getting a chance and overplaying some guys like Dempster, Gilbo, Lonie etc.
- Back line not being regenerated. Richo being very conservative here.
- Our rebound from the back is very poor. We would be one of the most static backlines in the AFL
- Our midfield can get done over big time. Need more depth and even peformances not just relying on ARmo and Steven
- Lonie looking toasted playing the big boys. Want to see him get his x-factor back - setting up his forwards with clever kicks, kicking those great goals
- Armo being a bit down from his outstanding form last year where he added some great outside run to his inside beast mode
- Too many players good at jumping on the bandwagon when a game goes our way but not yet capable of doing the heayy pushing to get it started or change the momentum when its against us
- Paddy's concussion - watch that precious melon of yours Macca
- Longers decline and concussion. He's young for a ruck though. Need him to keep developing his around the ground game
- I thought it was important that Freeman gets some footy under his belt this year. VFL, even devs, would be fine. He needs to be learning his craft on the field and feeling like a footy player again. I'm not panicing but if he can't get at least a few games under his belt for the rest of the season, my Freeman worry meter goes up to "Pretty Worried"

THE UGLY

- Those two huge losses interstate. A worry. Our defensive system should bend with inexperienced personal, but not break. We should be able to clog things up when the momentum is going against us to keep them to 60-70 point losses. Bigger than that is a huge worry.
- Goddard

Overall it's been an encouraging first half of 2016 barring a couple of disastrous trips interstate and an embarrassing performance against the Bulldogs.

Very happy with the development of a new forward line. Membrey. McCartin and Bruce looks potent and dangerous and we've a number of good crumbers.

The midfield, as Bluthy and others point out, needs more depth and less reliance on Hickey and Steven. We lack a big-bodied, explosive A-grader. I'm hoping Acres can be that player, but he's obviously a work in progress.

We also need someone who can give Hickey a significant chop out in the ruck. Not little cameos here and there. I mean, say, 30-40 per cent of the game. Our relatively tall forward line makes it difficult to play two ruckmen, so that makes it problematic.

The backline ... Well Fisher won't be around for ever and nor will Dempster. I haven't entirely given up on Delaney. He looked solid last round on Casboult. There's a real chance for him and Lee to push their claims in coming weeks.

The biggest disappointment is playing the old man's backline. Dempster, Fisher, Geary, Gilbert and Joey all down there together at times. Thank God Blake has retired otherwise he's keep getting picked too. They need to rotate all these old blokes out of the team to give others a go. We are lucky fish and dempster are injured otherwise we'd still be selecting them every week.

The biggest disappointment this year is that I haven't won Tattslotto..now on with the footy:

Plus:
Hickey, Ross, Gresham, Membrey, Steven
Solid efforts against the Hawks and Roos
Lee shows glimpses of being a solid defender if the coach would just leave him there to settle

Minus:
Richo needs to address defensive structures
Midfield erratic- sometimes good, sometimes really bad
Not winning against Hawks and Roos
Rolling over in PA game final quarter (see midfield erratic)
Reliance on older players

Neutral:
Paddy- shows a few glimpses, but I am yet to be convinced, seems a long way from getting his body right
Sinclair and Acres need as much game time as possible

Good: Hickey, Steven, Ross, Membrey, McCartin, Savage, no player controversies, very few injuries. Competent and respected CEO and coach.

Bad: Longer not getting on the park. Acres, Billings, and Sinclair's up and down form. Templeton's apparent stagnation stagnation. Tom Lee's shaky future

Ugly: Goddard's injury. Two shocking blowouts interstate. Carlisle's ban.

Underwhelmed by Roberton; he seems to be a downhill skier, and can't impose himself on a game or do anything valuable unless we're winning.

he had a pretty good game against the scummers and I was watching him fairly closely.

summary in inside footy stated that he took soe good intercept marks down back and played his part.

I would agree with that.

Love the Sergio Leone themed thread title! I agree with all from OP, except for Jack Newnes. Perhaps he's enduring a bit of a flat patch, but he'll start to show more what he's made of as the season progresses further.

The backline is most certainly our greatest concern. It'll be fascinating to see what progress will be made in amending by the end of the year.
