Massive Merv from Moorabbin

Post: # 1611948Post Sainternist »

Who remembers the old Coodabeens Talkback character, Massive Merv?

Back in the day, I just assumed he based purely on a stereotype of the overweight Saints supporter, but apparently he was based on an actual person: a bloke named Barry from the St.Kilda CS. I remember him from years ago when I was young lad in the cheer squad: http://www.footyalmanac.com.au/people-a ... eer-squad/

What a legend!

Yes! And he kinda looked like one of Santa's helpers or one of the Seven Dwarfs (the one with the beard).

Yep, but far from a dwarf. Ginormous man, reminded me more of Dr Frankenstien's Saint helper (Igor).

Good question, ST.

In all honesty, I hope he is very much alive and well.

Hey Massive...I mean Barry, give us a sign, mate!

I remember him too from a stint I had in the cheer squad in the 70s. I see there has been some questioning of the current cheer squad on this forum , but geez it was hard work in those days behind the goals at Windy Hill or Victoria Park or particularly at Carlton ( where Hawthorn also played) , in the rain as we got flogged by 10 goals. The stalwarts in those days were brilliant supporters.

He wasn't the biggest bloke in the CS though. There was another guy. I saw him working in a post office at Caulfield or somewhere round there. He was bigger than Barry.

I reckon the really big bloke was called Bill. From memory there was a girl, probably now an old lady called Rhonda who was a stalward in the cheer squad in the 1970's with Barry & Bill.

Saw Barry last year outside docklands and he was not well then. Knew big Bill and Barry since the early 70's. Still see one or two guys from the old grog squad days.
