Dustin Fletcher

Post: # 1589481Post Sanctorum »

I haven't seen any news about the make up of the coaching panel for 2016, however I have a suggestion, perhaps not acceptable to everyone, that the Saints recruit the recently retired Dustin Fletcher as Defensive Coach. There are several factors that come into this proposal: not only is Fletcher the most experienced and respected defender in the AFL in the past 20 years, but he could well be the key to ensuring St Kilda gets the best out of new star defender Jake Carlisle. It is possible that it will be a difficult start for Carlisle next year, but he is one of the best defenders in the competition, and the potential for him to transform the team's defence, which is why he was recruited in the first place, is phenomenal. Having Fletcher in his corner will go a long way to helping Carlisle get his career back on track.

Really? Are you saying that the minute that Carlisle is away from Fletcher that he starts misbehaving?
If that's the case, then we've really recruited a dud.

The fewer Essendon players and officials that come near our club, the better.
Fletcher, as an experienced player, being one of the Essendon 34 was totally complicit in the drugs scandal at Essendon.

Fletcher was a club leader.
What did he do during the drug program?
Did he ask questions or request information?
No, he just went with it.
He is exactly the sort of person we don't need.

And we don't need Carlisle either.
The baggage this drug riddled fool brings far outweighs any possible benefits.
He has already trashed our brand and made us a laughing stock even before his first training session.

This idea is batshit crazy. So I expect it will happen.

I reckon Spud Frawley will get more out of Carlisle in five minutes than anyone at Essendon did in 5 years.

Fletcher might have played for a long time, but anyone who has dealt with him will know that playing footy for a long time is about as far as it goes.

All Essendon got out of their whole list over the past 4 years was bunch of pin cushions.

Danny is already working with the team I believe and I'd like to see him continue working with the back-line as long as the brains trust feel he has something that he can pass on to this generation of Saints.
Danny has experienced the life of being an AFL coach as well and he strikes me as being very able to help Carlisle settle in and work constructively with an emerging back-line.
Danny always seemed to get close to the maximum out of himself as a key defender - regularly making it into the Victorian state of origin side.

Danny was great for the Saints as a player and he can continue his positive influence as a mentor working with AR. :D

I'm not against recruiting other club legends but there's something about Dustin that inherently off putting... He's so Essendon through and through. I feel like if he gets into the coaching game, he'll inevitably go back to the Bombers after a season or two and our info with him.
Naturally assistants move around... But generally opportunity and experience dictate where they go. Not the case with Dustin IMO

Would be handy if our backline tactics were to trip the opposition at every opportune moment

I think our backline's coming along nicely without Dustin, might be an idea to look further ahead to retaining one of our veterans as a coach post-career. The last time we recruited an Essendon legend to coaching staff...worked out marvellously, didn't it?

I don't understand it either but I also don't understand why he is a dick. Seems like a guy who loves a beer qand who happens to be good at footy who also seems to have little interest in coaching.

Then we also had The Gambler, Dean Wallis. Not only does he bet on AFL games as an assistant at Essendope but he can't keep keep computerised stats of drug taking amongst the players, tends to lose things. He's a bit of dead loss too !
