In your opinion who do we need for a flag
With Jake and Nathan looking to be ours. Heres the team we have so far capable of a flag in 4+ years
Roberton .Goddard. Webster
Savage. Carlisle. Newnes
Billings. Freeman. McKenzie
Sinclair. Bruce. ----------
------ McCartin. Lonie
Longer. Steven, Armitage
------- . ------- Dunstan. Weller
??
Acres
Templeton
Minchington
Membrey
Hickey
Delaney
Lee
Those players may improve and be good enough as they all have something ... But for now I see we need another 6 guns at least.
Another gun ruck/forward. Another tall defenders. And speedy goalkickers.
But all in all what a change weve made in 3 years. Fantastic!!
The team is taking great shape!

Good team for the future. We'll be able to add a couple of players through future drafts, a couple of which will have good talent that we will fit into the line-up. And to be a bit pedantic I'd swap Carlisle and Goddard around as they are more suited to those positions. I'd put Membrey in the pocket and Minch on the flank for now. Acres and Templeton on the bench. I do reckon we need more guns; putting my faith in the recruiters to deal with that.
Re: In your opinion who do we need for a flag
We need at least 8 more in out 22. We are at least that short but realistically maybe even 10 players short of having a top 4 side.

Re: In your opinion who do we need for a flag
We don't need any particular player to win a flag. We need to have a process and structure in place that will demand results. As a club we need to focus on being a champion team and not a team with champions.
I'm fairly happy with the structures that have been put in place from 2015 for the future. As the young players mature and work on their foot skills the only way is up.
How many champion players do Hawthorn have? It's all about structures and game style.
Keep going to the draft and build a strong sustainable future.

Agree with what you have put forward SMS but would not lock in Carlisle or Freeman, still a long way from being signed sealed and delivered

Building a team with class in the midfield plus a strong and balanced backline should be a priority. I guess a good start would be one quality mid with excellent footskills, and a strong bodied, strong marking backman.. and keep recruiting from there.
Re: In your opinion who do we need for a flag
Goalkicking mid on that fwd flank, dusty / robbie gray type. Hoping membrey becomes the safe hands / straight kicking medium fwd.

Re: In your opinion who do we need for a flag
Collingwood really improved from getting in a team of around 5 mid field drivers in Swan, Pendles, Beams, Sidebottom and Daisy. We have Steven and Armo that are comparable. Then it's day light. We need strong improvement from Ross and Dustan and possibly 2 clean quick mids on top of that. Freeman possibly one. If Acres or Mc Kenzie can step up it will help too.

What about Billings? He could be an elite mid.gringo wrote:Collingwood really improved from getting in a team of around 5 mid field drivers in Swan, Pendles, Beams, Sidebottom and Daisy. Billings, according to Richo, is going to be a diamond. I agree, and can see him holding the cup aloft as a pivotal member of the team.saint-stu wrote:What about Billings? Roberton- he's been great in some games, like the big Bombers win; but other games where we got belted and needed some hardness, he was very poor and couldn't do a thing in defence.
I'm referring to the Swans game in particular, where he cost 2 easy goals with silly unforced errors. Might be a Blakey type, but he will not be in our best 22.
A real Sainter will pledge allegiance to the ❤ and despise the Pies, the Blues, and the Injectors.

Cool, Freeman hasn't played an AFL game but is in our premiership team of the future!

Could be, I imagine he might get played like Schnieder this year long term. He is a gun and we could do with a couple more of his quality.saint-stu wrote:What about Billings? Re: In your opinion who do we need for a flag
Add to that a tall, large bodied and skilful midfielder in the Fyffe mold. The elephant in the room as far as our list strategy is concerned is the imminent departure of Roo. Depending on where we are at as a team, and where he's at personally at the end of the year, he may pull the pin. That would leave a gigantic hole in our team and club. A once in a generation player and clubman.spert wrote:Building a team with class in the midfield plus a strong and balanced backline should be a priority. No one on the list currently looks a likely replacement, with Goddard and McCartin as our best key position prospects. It's why we need a Carlisle type sooner rather than later, as well as the best available KP type through free agency next year. Sharing the load in his absence seems the only realistic answer, unless by some miracle, an absolute gun falls into our lap.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Re: In your opinion who do we need for a flag
Given Roberton finished 6th in the B & F and the 5 ahead of him were all older than him - it is fair to say he is going to be in our best 22 for a few years to come. Unless we can find 12 new players who are better than him in the next 5 years. I don't think we are that far off the pace but we need about 5 new A grade players to come in to the side.

i see roberton in our best 22 until he is 30. he was very good in a number of games, 20 games at an average of 20 disposals & 6 marks, 24 years old, 194 cm, all good.

The OP asks WHO
Loris answers what we need, probably an answer for a different thread rather than the end of this one.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?
