VFL review - great initiative

Post: # 1445580Post evertonfc »

Paul Hudson reviews all the Saints players' impact in the VFL for Sandringham.

Very insightful. This great stuff for the supporters. Nice work by Tom Morris.

http://www.saints.com.au/news/2014-04-0 ... -breakdown

Some really heartening development taking place with players we need to improve.
- Seb Ross had 33 touches
- Jack Billings had 19 touches
- Tom Simpkin had 19 touches, also went forward and kicked a goal.
- Milera kicked three and had "excellent" around the stoppages.
- Shenton: "It’s fantastic to see him so confident...He’s had three weeks of really good footy now. Unfortunately he’s a rookie but he’s forcing the issue."
- TDL arrived at half-time after coming from Etihad with no warm-up and had 10 touches and 5 tackles and was "fantastic" with his forward pressure.

Some worries...Tom Lee, for example. But at least the club is aware of it and keen to iron it out.

Hoping this is a weekly update.

I wonder if the Simpkin move forward is the beginning of a remodeling? I think it's worth a try, in fact a great idea, seeing as there just doesn't appear to be any opportunity in our backline at the moment.

Shenton is also an interesting one, because he always seems to play very well at Sandy but he is well down the pecking order in his position.

A great initiative however you're always going to get a positive spin out of the coaches on a public website.
From the comments from Hudson you'd be excused thinking Sandy had won convincingly on the weekend.

Good point - I thought they won! A nice idea though - at least some feedback is better than none at all, even if it's a bit biased.

I thought it was quite measured. "Serviceable" is code for a bad game.

Some pretty critical ones there.

Maybe it's just me but all of those criticisms were tempered to the point of reading a little awkwardly, almost as if the coach wasn't
allowed to say what he really thought. Each time a criticism was made there was an equal or greater positive spin to come out of
another aspect of their game.

Don't get me wrong though, I enjoy reading anything remotely "inside" from the club, was just saying that the lens we view it through is
very pro st kilda. It's what you'd expect from this site it we weren't such a critical bunch!

2010 your point is valid but it's still better than nothing.

Last year we got lots of nothing.

Farewell Westaway and Netters!

I would think it was the mindset of the football department over several years ( don't mention the bubble) rather than the board and admin.

Anyone who has worked in coaching knows that you need to temper your criticism's with a positive focus. Otherwise the person will lose not only confidence but the want to improve. It's also directed at the members so a positive slant will always be used. At this time of the year it would not be useful to come out and say "player A is slow, terrible decision maker who will never make it". Leave that for the trolls on the internet.

Everton it has been a constant since the start of sandy practice matches, great idea and works well with the other online media they have created.

Thats exactly right. Any negatives will come in the player revue not to the public. glad they do it. maybe they could do it for senior players as well for those who donjt see games or understand what some players were required to do during a game.

Couple that concern me... It felt like Huddo was trying to hide his thoughts

Definitely Spencer... Not sure his review made since, faint praise and contradictory?!

Tom Lee... Not getting to the ball enough

Pointed out actual faults in
Siposs ... Defence
Weller.... Balance between offence and defence
Minch... Inconsistent

Shenton, Simpkin, Dunnell, Even Milera and TDL are very good at VFL level consistently

Markworth a bolter for mine

Seems to me that most of the players have got problems / weaknesses and are not AFL ready players.

Glowing rap for Dunnel I thought that seems to have gone unnoticed in this thread

Good to see Ross put his hand back up and Murdoch return

Fair point.

Undoubtedly, it looks more towards the potential "upside" than the obvious "downside".

Thought the praise was met with constructive criticism, within reason, without hanging anyone out to dry.

Maybe a bit more on the "honest" critique would be nice.

Either way, I reckon it was insightful and fairly detailed, something we hardly ever see on an official club website.

Yes, it's good to get a club view on how these guys are going. Seb Ross sounded impressive and I'm looking forward to seeing Spencer White once he puts it all together.

Shenton has been unlucky not to play a fair bit of seniors last year. He is probably just playing in a position we have plenty of options in.
