Re: The Heat!
yeah, i think so...they looked stuffed...didn't help that they played a less experienced side in the second game against a full list of fresh port players......besides the umpiring was utter crap...Cairnsman wrote:Did the heat really play a big part in the Saints poor showing during the Port game?
SW seems to be going on with it.
.everybody still loves lenny....and we always will

Re: The Heat!
There was a whisper that the club were concerned a couple of guys would end up in hospital, so yeah I think two games back to back in 38 degrees was an issue....

Be very interesting to see what the AFL will do if its hot for the Collingwood v West Coast game in Perth in a fortnight. Lets see if the same treatment is given to the AFL franchise Collingwood.

Re: The Heat!
Id say so but the second side was also very young compared to the first. Does it matter now. No. Does the result matter. No. Did we injuries. No. That is all that matters now.

What about the effect it had on the players that played? Weight loss, reduced game time and so on?

SW said it would take 2 days to recover so they would train as normal this week.

I'd expect all that to have been taken into account by the coaching/medical staff.
I'm with Plugger ... no injuries == good result. The actuall score is pretty much irrelevent in a practice match.

Re: The Heat!
Happy with the first game. The second was lethargic. I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. Got full sun, port at least had almost half shade by their second half v the crows.
Liked what I saw early given their first hit out - mind you the crows were pathetic - not a good show by their irregulars - worrying signs for their depth.

Re: The Heat!
I was thinking it shouldn't affect them too much, being professional athletes and whatnot...but after training for my club last night in a stuffy 35 degrees I've realised that there's no way it wouldn't have a huge impact, regardless of fitness. I've been getting through training comfortably over the pre season and then last night in the heat I absolutely blew up after less than an hour just going through the usual drills and exercises. Plenty of blokes felt physically unwell and needed to take a breather every now and then. I can imagine the running intensity of the saints boys combined with a lack of match conditioning and the absurd heat would have made for a seriously uncomfortable and painful experience.

No excuse huh Cairnsman, let's hope this attitude doesn't spread through the club, and they don't put the cue in the rack mentally for the season.

All true. Maybe we were just lucky the heat didn't adversely effect our players.St DAC wrote:I'd expect all that to have been taken into account by the coaching/medical staff.

At least Lenny, Roo, Dumpster, Schneids, Fisher and Joey missed both matches.

Re: The Heat!
I thought we looked similar to last year...lack of legs.
The oppo gets the ball and they have all the space in the world, we get it and we are jumped on quicker than a looker at a cheap brothel....it ain't rocket science.
OR
We have legs but no coach.
(second game in hot conditions taken into account)

Re: The Heat!
Don't worry CURLY, if fat ed doesn't change the rules, then the AFLPA will surely step in to protect the players interests just like they did on....oh wait..CURLY wrote:Be very interesting to see what the AFL will do if its hot for the Collingwood v West Coast game in Perth in a fortnight. Collingwood will sook and carry on and the AFL will say "on reflection" the heat rule should have be invoked, so we better do it for this game even thought it's only going to be 26c.

Re: The Heat!
the AFL is probably trying to run the NAB into the ground. The AFLPA has pushed to scrap it for ages. If they make it boring, irrelevant and as cheap as possible no one will care when they dump it. The whole 3 game round robin is just an economy exercise- 1 stadium hire is cheaper than 2. If they get an injury to a star they will be even happier when the journos and coaches suggest it's scrapped.
Re: The Heat!
SW has good reason to query heat rule and use it as a factor??
Ridiculous to think a team running around fresh is not going to annihilate a team that has been subjected to 38 degree heat for 40 minutes at full intensity??
Not that it really matters, except that flagrant lack of duty of care to the players which has been highlighted by 4 senior coaches since...
