So what did Bakes actually do to Farmer?

Post: # 1181054Post The Redeemer »

5 score years ago a few posters on here stated that they would reveal what Baker did to Farmer once he had retired.

Now it is time to reveal....

Baker took Farmer's wheat to Miller who made it into flour.
Then Baker took the flour and made it into bread.

Baker refused to share the bread with Demetriou so he was suspended.
Demetriou said "I am God. Everyone should share bread with me"

From this point on, Baker was toast.

On game eve Stevie B dined heartily on Burger Lounge's jalapeno heavy Ring of Fire offering.

The outcome was inevitable.

Farmer was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The rest is history.

I spoke to Bakes on the Gold Coast in December '08..Saints were up for a training camp/meet & greet (Saint Bev and the SEQ Saints did a great job of organising the Fan function).....

I asked Bakes if he felt hard done by over the penalty dished out to him after the "Farmer Incident".....

... He said, "Mate, I was lucky. If there'd been any video, I'd have never played again"

Make of that what you will........ but Bakes would be my 1st choice beside me in the trenches.

Did anyone actually see it? I was sitting behind the goals on level two and had a pefect view if I was looking.

Someone in high places obviously saw it. Was fortunate to only get the 7,but they wacked him with the Stevie J farce to make up for it 3 years down the track...

The reason I brought this up was that a few forum members knew exactly what had happened and were sworn to secrecy somehow. Hence why I am asking now considering Baker is no longer at the football club.

I guessed what had happened however I didn't want to rush to a conclusion despite kind of knowing what he did.

In an aside he really was screwed over by the Tribunal in 09 for the Stevie J smackfest. Considering Johnson received 4 weeks with minimal (if any) loading it makes sense due to Baker's previous history and subsequent loading.

I was at the game and I saw it (admittedly from the third level)

I argued his innocence very strongly at the time because I saw him run, then stop and Farmer ran into the back of him. It looked to me as Farmer was trying to belt Baker and didn't expect him to stop so quickly.

Very surprised to hear that Baker said he thought he'd get suspended for life, there must have been a more pronounced headbutt than it seemed lke from the third level.

It's surely possible that Bakes was being a bit facetious. The guy was given a ridiculously hard time by the tribunal.

I doubt that a video would show all that much. If both players were running at speed and Bakes stopped suddenly and backward headbutted Farmer, it still wouldn't look as bad as punch to the head.

All the media insinuations at the time (eg, bloody Tim Lane) were rlthat Bakes had deliberately hit an unsuspecting Farmer in the face behind play. The absence of a video made it seem all the more sinister.

The AFL had it in for Baker because of his (mostly) legal, highly effective tagging. And possibly even because he was close to GT (Demetriou's hatred of GT is childish in the extreme and belies the concept that Demetriou is a good administrator).

Bakes was terribly hard done by.

He should never have even been before the Tribunal for this one.

The whole tribunal case was called on teh statement given to the AFL investigator by a Freo trainer.

When questioned by Bakes' counsel he admitted that he actually didn't see the incident.

Insted of stopping questioning the trainer and demanding the hearing be immediately thrown out, the counsel mistakenly (imo) continued trying to defend Bakes.
The case should have stopped there and then because it was convened on a falsehood - the eyewiness testimony of the Freo trainer who admitted he didn't see the incident.
A technicality of course, but that's the right of all accused.

I have absolutely no idea what treanspired out on the field - I didn't see it.
But Bakes' version, whilst it may well be true, always sounded implausible to me.
Unless it was Kosi who was running behind him and didn't see him stop. :)

Ask the then footy club manager. He was the one who tipped the bucket on baker at the tribunal.
