Draft: Rankine v Rozee v Smith v King

Post: # 1756963Post BenLong#21 »

Safe to assume we end up with Pick 4 and Lukosius and Walsh are already gone.

Should we go the solid looking local lad Bailey Smith or someone with X factor like Conor Rozee who might carry a 'go home factor' risk?

Smith looks solid enough. Plays similar to Jack Steele. A straight ahead at the ball kind of player.

Rozee has already dominated at senior SANFL level and looks to have the physique, athleticism and tricks to make it at AFL level.

Safe to assume that 3 of King, Rankine, Smith and Rozee will be available.

We can only choose 1.

Chances are we will get Pick 4 and Rankine is quite likely to still be available.
GC will get a compensation pick for Lynch giving them 2 & 3. Carlton have pick 1 and even if they are given a priority pick it won't be pick 2.

I am working on the theory May leaves and GC get 2, 3 & 4.

Update:
Foxsports is reporting that the Suns are considering using pick 3 on Rozee which makes my discussion moot.
If May stays at GC - we could end up with Rankine.

Con I agree Rozee is coming along nicely , not sure he will go this high though.

May leaving has no bearing on the draft. He is still under contract, meaning no compensation. It would be a trade.

Good call.

Ok yes I see. So pick 4 it is!

Seems like Walsh and Lukosius will be gone for sure.

Then GC will look at Rankine, King or Rozee (if you believe the foxsports article).

Three of the following 4 will be available when our pick comes along - King, Rankine, Smith and Rozee.....

Most importantly...

What shape are their bedrooms in?

Do they have very solid characters?

The May thing is GC trying to con the AFL into giving them a top-5 pick because they know they aren't going to get that in trade. They're more likely looking at another late first round pick and possibly some steak knives. They know that there are people at the AFL who want to give them a priority pick and are trying to exploit that. I'll be genuinely annoyed if the AFL move our pick down any more than the expected Lynch compo.

What is unexplained is why we traded away our 2nd & 3rd picks in what is widely regarded as 2018 being a strong draft. Not sure what we have to trade without throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Not that my opinion is of any relevance but I want Rankine. Our drafting has been safe and boring so it’s time for some X-factor.
Regards May and compensation I believe the AFL won’t want the Suns to be without May and Lynch next year so they will make it obvious to the Suns that if they break May’s contract with a year to run they won’t be getting a early first round pick for both, hence we should have pick 4 after the suns get Lynch compensation

Actually I disagree with this statement entirely.
Our drafting has not been safe at all and I think that has been one of our problems.
Paddy was a high risk/high return punt where Petracca was a far safer bet.
Billings was seen as a silk and X-factor player but he has not come on as well as we had hoped (I am not going to go into why because it has been done to death on here).
I think a high risk player is the last thing we need (I am opposed to trading for Hannerbery for that reason).
We cannot afford another bust and Rankine could be anything or nothing, in my opinion of course.

Billings was seen to come from a good safe and nice family with a good character.
I think the recruiters fell in love with his parents to be honest.

You are right.
I had forgotten that.
Yes the theory was the GC could 'rip up' his contract to artificially make him a fee agent - so they could then manufacture pick 4 compo.
Cant see that being allowed. Would create a troubling precedent.

Is it a lottery?
If so why do all 18 clubs bother to hire and pay for recruiting staff?
Why not just read the phantom drafts published online and follow those?

Rankine and Smith are the standouts... I think Rankine is brilliant but Smith strikes me as one of those good at everything, consistently great mids.

I want both.

Worth nothing that SA were the best team in the U18 Champs by an absolute mile this year

Must pick the best player. I think that is the golden rule. Forget nice parents, clean bedrooms and whether he likes a good night out here and there. As long as he is not 5' 9" tall or under. Just would'nt be able to handle another Lonie.

Smith looks like a goer. Is he 'great'?

To compare:
Rankine kicked 12 goals in 4 games in the U18 champs.
Smith 3 from 4 games

If we get Rankine I am going to do a 180 degree from negative to positive.
Would be a good get.

I don’t know how anyone can say it’s a strong draft. 18 year olds play against other 18 year olds. They might look good now, but what happens when they play against men?

And how well does this “strong draft” extend to picks in the 2nd and 3rd round?

We desperately need quality midfielders so I went with Smith, but wouldnt be unhappy with Rankine.
