How dare we recklessly sell our future?

Post: # 1749824Post Enrico_Misso »

Last year in the 2017 draft our "brains trust" traded away our second and third round picks.

So this year we get (excluding priority picks and ladder variations in the next 2 weeks)

Pick 3
....
daylight
....
more daylight
...
Pick 57
Pick 67
Pick 68

Other than that lone first round pick we don't have any scope to do anything in this draft unless we trade.

Just shows how stupid and short sighted our recruiters are to damage our future recruiting by borrowing from the future to make them look good in the present.

It's a bit like getting sucked in to buying a nice looking car without getting a roadworthy and paying for it with a high interest credit card - you wind up with a lemon, and no room to replace it with a decent one!

Would have been fine if we'd traded for some gun.

Nope.

I wouldn't call it reckless. We did get Austin & Claravino with the 2018 2nd & 3rd round picks, and they are young tall defenders who are looking OK - hopefully will shore up our backline for quite a few years.

Plenty of clubs are using future picks to get players/better their draft position. Hawthorn sold half the farm to get O'Meara - good player, but I wonder who they would have drafted with their lost draft picks? 3 young players, all under pick 36, one of whom was pick 7. Six of one half dozen the other. They have quite a few players on the list getting on a bit.

We still have options to get more footing in this year's draft if we want to, including future picks. Interesting to see what happens.

The difference is Hawthorn had a good list already, and a very good coach.

That's right, and they are after a flag before the remnant players of their 3peat are gone - so go for the likes of Mitchell & O'Meara no matter the cost. We were looking to fill gaps with younger developing players, not necessarily looking at immediate impact. That has gone back a bit this year, but we still have a lot of players just about to hit their prime years (hopefully?).

So Clavarino is looking okay is he? Have you been down to TBBO recently to have a look?

I have no idea how Oscar is going but the guy that went a few picks after him (Number 38 in last years draft) just won the nomination this week for Rising star #youcanfindgemsifyoudoyourhomework

http://www.hawthornfc.com.au/player-pro ... mes-worpel

I think we probably rated Dunstan in a similar vain in his first year. There were big raps on Luke so he was handed the number 7 jumper when Lenny retired. Hasn't improved at the rate that you'd expect but hopefully he has upside

Claravino was in the best last game. He is a pretty big kid and will take some time, but he is tracking well.

Yes, going well for a young 196cm back in his first year. As with most tall players, will probably take longer to develop than mid type players, but I think he will be a chance for the 1s next year.

Agreed. He simply needs to bulk up more and it will come.
196cm is tall. I think N. Brown and Goddard are that height too, so you get an idea of how tall he is.
He was named as FB in the U/18 AA side along with Paton in the BP and Coffield at HBF.

Disagree with this post entirely.

We traded into the second round last year but you omit that.

And we haven't traded our future away, that would be akin to trading future first rounds in previous years.

So what, we are missing a pick 20 odd. They obviously thought it would be a better year and miss a pick 30 odd. Barely being reckless oven the future system has been in place for years.

This post is completely over the top.

I agree with the post, important point everyone seems to forget about is, how low those picks have now become, they hold much more value now, the other clubs will be laughing at us now.

Huh????? why are those picks lower now and why do they hold more value?? In actual fact they may be worse. As it is GC will get an additional pick after their first pick as compensation for Lynch, plus Carlton are now open to asking for a priority pick, which if they do, will be granted.

So the club shouldn't do any trades?

Complete overreaction. They didn't just disappear - we got players for them...

My concern is it sets a dangerous precedent.

In the testosterone charged environment of trade week the worry is that our recruiters in the heat of the moment will get carried away and put multiple future picks on the table.
The danger of that is it leaves us with limited options in future years.

We should ban any use of future picks no matter how good the proposed deal may seem at the time.

So your not happy with the deal with hawthorn where we gained Hunter Clarke (a 2017 future pick back in 2016)?

One rumour was we are looking to trade Billings for North's first round pick. If North are actually keen on this, I think it would be wise to go for it.

Saints website has Goddard at 196cm and Clara at 195cm. Maybe he will grow more.

Trout traded our 2018 2nd round draft pick for a late 2017 2nd round pick but also threw away late picks to make it happen.
WHY ?
The only answer can be that he was desperate to get another pick in the top 40.
He knew that his job was on the line.
He hoped that one of his first 3 picks would be a instant gem that would save his job.
He got Clavarino who may eventually turn into a gem.
But that is who we get for an early 2018 second round pick and a few 2017 steak knives.

What are you talking about? Drafting young talent is not a fantasy trading exercise or a game based on barter. How many AFL clubs actually recruit players and then look to trade them after 1 year? Especially with Oscar who was picked up through the national draft.

The whole point of drafting 18 year olds is to play them not to re-trade them before they've had a chance to develop.

What was Paddy Dangerfield worth after his first year at Adelaide? I bet they didn't predict he'd be a Brownlow medalist and multiple All Australian.

What, 2013 pick 47 for pick 3.
Maybe if I threw in 2014 pick 1 Paddy McCartin.

Nah.
I still don't think that North would trade our picks 1 and 3 for their pick 47.
I doubt the Dogs would do it for their 2013 pick 4 or Carlton for their 2013 pick 13.
