Essendon & Giants in talks over pick 1

Post: # 1640249Post sainters85 »

GREATER Western Sydney has met with Essendon to discuss what it might take to secure the Bombers No.1 draft pick, ramping up negotiations as trade period nears.

The two clubs met on Friday with the Giants keen to get their hands on the first pick in the NAB AFL Draft, as speculation continues that it wants to secure highly rated defender Andy McGrath.

The athletic McGrath was Vic Metro co-captain and could bolster the Giants' defensive stocks as Heath Shaw enters his twilight years and Joel Patfull considers his future.

Who's on the move? Nick Bowen tracks 2016's free agents

Securing the No.1 pick would enable the Giants to draft a player before using its draft points to secure academy prospects Will Setterfield and Harry Perryman, although the Giants remain hopeful rather than optimistic of gaining pole position.

AFL.com.au understands the Bombers are attracted to the prospect of turning their No.1 into two high draft picks to potentially replicate their draft strategy of the past two years and bring more talented youngsters into the club.

In the 2015 draft the Bombers chose Darcy Parish at pick No.5 and Aaron Francis at pick No.6, and in 2014 they added Kyle Langford at pick No.17 and Jayden Laverde at No.20.

The Giants hold picks 7, 15 and 16 but remain hopeful of gaining pick No.5 for Caleb Marchbank after he decided to join Carlton

Question is... should we also be going for the first pick, or a higher draft pick or are we going to primarily be focusing on maturer players?

We don't have anything to give for pick 1.... Wouldn't invest in a young defender....No need at our stage of development on our list....

Agreed.

We'd have to give Billings and 10 which makes zero sense. Only club who would benefit from trading into 1 is one with early academy boys.

If Taranto lasts until 10, he could be just as good as McGrath anyway.

Just a disgrace if GWS get pick 1.

AFL needs to stop it happening.
It is NOT what the academy rules were intended for...
GWS already get free hit at 2 top 10 rated players, Setterffled and Perryman... even though they only have pick 16+pick 7 (from pies)
So the rules, intended to help them get academy kids, already favour them

Now they manipulate the rules to get NON academy kids by trading down those picks and still getting Setterffled and Perryman.

Just a another AFL cluster-f^&ck.. when you write laws, you want them to achieve certain outcomes... it cant be that hard to write laws that allow GWS access to acedmy kids without them being able manipulate them so that they ALSO get pick 1

Oh.. and why are the media not highlighting this?? They are just so damn AFL compliant

This will push our pick down a spot.. maybe even two.. could very likley cost us our target player
Our club should be protesting vehemently and getting this stopped... AFL makes laws on the run all the time... it is time for some intervention.

So it's a possibility that GWS could trade say 7 and 15 for pick 1, get 5 from Carlton for Marchbank and end up with 1, 5, 16 and two academy kids. Is that a possibility?

Or 7 and even 5 for pick 1 and end up with 1, 15, 16 and two academy kids who are top ten selections.

Clearly, they don't have enough first round picks on their books and need another 5 this year to balance up their list deficiencies. With the loss of Marchbank, that would take them to only 24 first round picks on their list, plus Mumford, Griffen et al.....Poor buggers, they're having a rough trot getting themselves established.

this is the one being mooted, assuming Blues cough up 5 for Marchbank... of course they would need to use 15 and 16 for the two top 10 picks but they end with 3 top ten picks including pick 1, when the rules are only intended to help them get their academy kids...

Blues would need to be crazy to give pick 5 considreing their list IMO.... oh, that is right.... done deal

AFl will change the rule at some stage.. they mooted a change this year, revolving around number of list spots compared to number of draft picks... but backed out... if they get pick 1 + the academy players this year, there will be backlash and the rules will change to prevent these manipulations... we should be pushing to stop it now..

Meeting was on Friday. Friday was a Public Holiday in Victoria. Were ESS FC staff paid double time to attend the meeting?

USELESS FACT: The WADA case against Essendon (in Sydney as well) is exactly 10 years to the day that Australia qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
