Post: # 1634225Post bigcarl »

Thought he competed really well at the hit outs. He's got a good leap on him and a good tank.

Obviously is no Tom Hickey around the ground, but I thought he played his part in getting us first use.

Thought that was the best game he's played for the club. His tap work was superb, but also did a few things at ground level that were quite useful.

Definitely think he's earned a one-year extension, provides good back-up if Hickey goes down. Stoked that he was able to grab a couple of wins this year too.

Tony74 said he came in to compete against Hampson of Tigers, hit-outs broke even so maybe he's staying as back-up for Hickey.

as the game went on he got better and better. he still has a mountain of work to do... but by the 3rd and 4th i thought he started to look like he was right in the game and not a fish out of water during the 1st.

We have already signed Longer and Pierce for the next two years.

My guess is the last two games were to see if he's up to it. Broke even with Martin in the ruck, but only had 2 possessions, Martin had 20+.

Will be delisted and if he's not picked up (which he won't be), we'll probably re-rookie him again.

If he was 20 and playing like he is he'd be worth persisting with but he is about to turn 27 and he is the fourth best ruckman. Two possessions is not AFL standard. It's barely VFL standard.
It's a shame because he is an athletic and competitive beast and a good tap ruckman. But the days of being a pure tap ruckman are long gone. It's why Hickey is being played over Longer and why Pierce is ahead of Holmes.
I'd rather give another rookie spot to someone who has more upside and we've committed our international rookie spots to the two Irish guys for next season.
Can't see where Holmes adds value on our list now.

Agree with the consensus, not enough benefit around the ground. You need a ruckman who can take overhead marks on the bailout kicks and occasionally link up play and drift forward to keep the opposition honest.

That and his age leaves little time to improve.

He's promising, but a long way off. If he'd come to the game younger, he would have been quite a player.

With Ruck stocks including Hickey, Longer & Pierce and given that we'd be looking at finals from next year on, I don't know that we have the time to put into him.

A club starting a development/rebuliding path, such as Carlton or Brisbane, could do a lot worse than recruiting Holmes.

Experiment over in my book.

Tap work was good, not great.

But.......2 possessions, no marks. So basically one player on the team who contributes nothing apart from competing for hit outs at stoppages. Too inflexible. I think a ruckman needs to contribute more than that.

If only he knew how to contest for marks and have better instincts of reading the play. Unfortunately these are qualities which can't be taught and come from playing the game for a long time. Jim Stynes and Sean White are two examples of international players having a great ability to cotton on to those types of nuances. I can't think of any more.

Oh well, in having him at the club may provide for more American interest. Seemed like he's was really liked amongst the players. All the best to him, if he does in fact part ways with the club.

His age is the problem .
In 2 or 3 three years he could be good .
by then he's thirty .

You would like to think that the saints could use him as a potential talent spotter in the states .( that's if he goes back , maybe he likes it out here !)
If we were to get someone of his ability at an earlier age , they could be worth the investment .

Were we kicking it to him though?? I saw him wide open in the middle of the ground...we ended up kicking along the wing!

Tom Hickey is our No 1 ruck and Billy Longer our No 2. However, it will be unlikely that they play in the same team. Jason Holmes has the body to contest hard, but can't do too much else other than the odd spoil. Lewis Pierce has played one game, so who knows but that is why he is No 4. We probably need 3 talls on our list and can afford to have one rookie. My guess is that all four will be there in 2017.

Sounds just like McEvoy only he could not get a hit out either.
Hawthorn taught McEvoy not to waddle like a duck.
Geelong taught Stanley to catch the ball.
All we have to do is teach Homeboy to catch and kick, simples.

Holmes should be upgraded to the senior list. He is the perfect number 3 ruckman/backup ruckman. Then we can trade Hickey for pick 15 or better. We then use this pick at the draft on the best midfielder possible. This will leave Longer as the number 1 ruckman, Pierce as the number 2 and Holmes as the number 3 ruckman/backup ruckman.

It is that time - he has been an international rookie for 3 years now.
He must either be put on the senior list or sent into the main draft and failing that into the rookie draft - anyone can take him.

That means St Kilda must either put him on the senior list or hope to pick him back up in the rookie draft as a rookie type A (not international).

Trade Hickey. One of your worst posts yet and that's saying something. You just love taking the piss, don't you? :roll

So you want to effectively trade Hickey, who is potentially an all time great ruckman, for an untried top 10 or 15 draftee? Should we also consider Ty Vickery?

Trade Hickey for pick 15?
Dear oh dear. He is 25 and top 3 in this year's B & F.
Lets trade Jack Steven for a pick 20 as well then.

Tom's been good in 2016

But he's not an 'all time great'

That's as silly as City Wests comment to trade him...

I would also suggest Tom would be worth Pick 10-15 as Brad Ottens was at Geelong many years ago (pick 12)

I would trade Longer in a heart beat. He would get overs... He is actually no better than Holmes, neither can get a kick.
Holmes has no currency and is cheap.
