A great effort but....

Post: # 1603322Post BigMart »

How can we explain a fade out like that...

Why are Port with one less player able to run over us so easy

Couple of reasons imo

Slow in the midfield, and back half.... And could not run the ball from defence in the last.... When Jack and Joey are not involved we are slow... Armo, Seb, Dunstan, Acres are slow over the ground and don't carry the ball... Our defenders are slow with the ball.

Hickey tired and could no longer dominate

We had a few passengers... Who had no real impact
Inc
Nick R... Was one of his more average games, was not an Ariel threat....
Gresham, Eli had long periods of nothing
Jack Newnes and Jack Billings were pretty average
Fisher was eventually overwhelmed through amount of i50's... He was manful

Having said that
It was a tremendous effort for three quarters
Whilst the players were fresh... We were great.... But as soon as our pressure dropped due to tiredness our offensive weakness was exposed
All our goals are basically through pressure, and we get out the back....new need to be able to create goals ourselves too

When you take Roo, Montagna and Fisher out of the side, it's a very young list.
A lot of these blokes are in only their second or third years.
They don't have the same pre-season schedule as the 5 year players. You have to build up to it.
We will fade out of a lot of games this year.

People need to be realistic. If we win 6-8 games this year it's a good result.

The real measuring stick are how the young guys come on.
Ross, Acres, Dunstan, Billings, Lonie & Co.

If they all show improvement, if the effort & desperation is up, I'm happy to have fade out games, because with another 1 or 2 pre season in them we'll have a very good squad.

One less NAB cup match makes us underprepared, don't expect us to catch up till about round three. 33% less hardened game practice would take its toll... Looked underdone to me.

f*** I hate the AFL. A proper preparation and we MAY have run the game out. Fuckers!

Do we have anyone of the class of Robbie Gray, Wingard, Wines?

Maybe Billings will prove to be in that class, but can't think of any others in the under 26 age bracket....

I hope at the end of the year, we hold our top 5 pick and take the best available midfielder....we have guts and effort, we desperately need class.

One practice game in 5 weeks. We were always gonna run out of legs near the end of the match. Great effort for three quarters.

Please, please stop blaming a missed practice march for our loss. What round do you think we will be back on level terms with the rest of the comp. Not ideal but spare me.

This. We did WAY better than I had expected for 3 quarters and ran out of legs. Way too early to call the season one way or another.

What are you on about? Our performance for 2.5 qtrs was great. Since you are a fitness expert answer the question. What round will we be back on level terms. Or is our season ruined due to a missed practice match. They have been training for months ffs.

mate you have no understanding of preparing for athletic contests

there is a huge difference between running around at seaford and playing in a match situation

listen to any footballer and they will tell you how important it is

Ok I give up. It was the cause of that 10 goal turn around and cost us the game. Our season is also probably rooted. How does one less player to rotate affect a side? What would footballers tell me about that?

Port outmatched us in the end with their bigger and more mature bodied players. It's just a matter of sports science. Even in the third quarter after they came back after our mini rampage, you could tell we were always going to be hard pressed to keep up the same intensity. The expressions of fatigue shown by our boys in the last quarter told the story.

On a brighter note, sports science also suggests that it is only a matter of time before our players will have a level of fitness and strength that Port demonstrated in that final quarter.

Well i can tell you this

You gave votes to Ross who absolutley epitomised our fade out in the last quarter. dropped marks, tuened it over etc etc and I am not having a go at him he was great early but simply ran out of fitness.

Yes they all did. Ross included. It was 22 v 21 for most of the match. I'm wondering why this wasn't a factor.

Really enjoyed the game, apart from the final 15 minutes. Great to see the Port throng put in their box, especially in the third.

I thought we looked a tad under-done, but also put the result down to the difference between a team in their prime versus a team deep in development...there was a level of composure and hardness with the Port boys that we lacked. It will come during the season. Having said that, there were a few 'kicks in hope' to the forward line late in the first/early in the second, where better options were available and we really burnt the chance to be a further 3-4 goals up mid way through the second term.

Roo was a tad average by his lofty standards, yes, but was double teamed a few times and not awarded a great mark deep in the forward line at one stage, which should have resulted in a goal.

All in all, encouraging, if disappointing.

The clear lack of match fitness was alarming.

Actually stopping for the three quarter time break hurt us. They couldn't get moving.

What can you say but hopefully they will be better for the run...

It started before 3qtr time... Bad signs 10 to go in the third

We ran out of legs, not because we missed one praccie game... We are not as fit as port.

Btw
Why does everyone think we put a team of kids on the park???

We hard plenty of match hardened players
