Rewatching 09/10 tonight on the AFL marathon

Post: # 1583389Post Locals322 »

I swear to god if Zac Dawson and Sam Gilbert's mistakes had not been out there we win both. Add in perhaps Clarke. Our stars could not of made a bigger effort to make this team great.

So you never got the poor kicking by a couple of players at goal as any sort of reason why we lost? That is my memory but I will never watch a second of those games to confirm it.

Neither will I watch a second of them, and I agree re kicking, Milne and Schneider were main culprits from memory.

It was both in 2009, but only the backs (e.g. Gilbert) in 2010 (GF1). One crucial mis-kick. Even the best teams miss shots for goal, but they don't miss 20 metre passes that see turnovers and opposition goals. We lacked kicking skill on the back line in both years and it eventually cost us. Whoever kicks best today coming out of defence will win. If they also make the most of every shot at goal, then that will be icing on the cake.

The second game was '66. The kicking was much worse than anything from this century. When did coaches and players realise that the drop kick just didn't work?

It's not just that one turnover or that one missed shot.

We had plenty of opportunity in both 2009 and 2010 but we just made too many mistakes.

9 goals 14 to 12 goals 8 in 2009 for example.

You could argue that five of our behinds were absolutely gettable goals.

We carried too many players with dodgy foot skills in 2009/10.

Lyon's "role player" model is repeatedly getting found out in the games that matter and I really don't think that he will win a flag.

Those Grand Finals haunt me. We left far too much to our star players. Far too much.

That f****** Hawkins goal. Inept AFL again. ....

See.. these games are still bad for my health...I had to come back and edit twice.

Tuddenham goal early in the last quarter was clearly touched.

What was Tuddy thinking? Another one or two bounces before kicking a goal and Barry Breen would have been consigned to trivia nights. And John Bingley would live out his days knowing that he couldn't stop Tuddy.

They're grand finals folks. Pressure comes first and skills are secondary. Only the truly exceptional performers can overcome the pressure with their skills.

I can't bring myself to watch either 09 or 10.
My memory was of missed shots at goal and some bad luck - the toe-poke in 09 and the bounce in 10.
I think the boys gave all they could.
I'm still haunted to this day and suspect only a win in the big dance will rectify this.

They're bloody had to win.

Getting there is only half the battle as West Coast is painfully finding out.

In 09 and 10 we were not favourites. Pity we came up against such good opposition.

Things may have been different if Geelong won in 08.

No we were not. It wasn't by a lot but we were underdogs with both the bookies and the tipsters.

We were massive under dogs in 2010.

Couldn't sleep.
Switched it on.
For some reason they were showing the 3rd qtr of 2009.
Leading by 5 points.
Then BJ collided with Baker which was when I think he did his collar bone.
Quickly switched off

I seem to remember a McQualter missed tackle in 09 that was a killer.
Also shows that geary and gilbert are liabilities and should be moved on. Neither can kick or handball.

So a game where one didn't even play shows those 2 are liabilities? Yep that makes sense. Anyway I have some news for you and that is both are playing next season. Whinging every week about it wont change that. All it will do is confirm you are a whinger. Just watch them and try to enjoy their footy and look for what they do well and not focus and every error.

By 1971, when there was not one drop kick in that GF. Both Hafey and Barassi moved from the drop kick, and the flat and torpedo punt kicks, to the drop punt in 1967/68. It won them flags. We were slow to adopt. It is my firm belief that it was the sole reason we failed to capitalise on our talent in that era.

2009 the goal given to Hawkins then the next clearance the umpire gifted Ablett a free and goal. Both wrong and won Geelong the Grand Final.

2010 Gardiner going down was huge and in the end costly.

I actually thought Gardiner going down got us back into the game. Kosi did better than Gardiner when rucking and if you look at the scoring it is then when we started our comeback. This is all memory as I don't get how people could even watch a second of that crap.

I tuned in only a couple of times and for very brief periods. The first time was during the final minute of the '66 GF. The second time whilst they were showing the last minute of the 2010 drawn GF. Spooky.

torture yourself much?

We should be proud. 2004-2011 was a great stkilda era. If anything to blame, moreso admin and lack of facilities meant collingwood geelong get over the line. I dare say given the same facilities and admin we wouldve won 4 flags.

Re the game. 2009: i actually blame reiwoldt for his overzealous jump at the ball when Blake clearly had the mark.
Of course never can or would blame our greatest captain and heart but ... Have a look 5 mins to go scores equal. We were away.

Anyway its done. Much to be proud of. Only bloght on rooeys game is that he tries too hard sometimes where he shouldnt. How can you hate that though??

To be fair 2010 the pies became a great team. And the cats well they are stars. But yes we were just as good and couldve pinched them both. Suks.

Dawson did the right thing not his fault.
Gilbo in draw was a god and kosi in the draw almost became a cult hero he was amazing. Gardiner off i think was a blessing.

We had the grand final moment in goddards mark, the injury that changed things that all flag teams have but we still lost. Typical.

Maxwells mark in he last quarter cost us the flag. That bloody mark. We needed to hit the target. What a shame.

Needed a bigger effort from the key forwards to win those games, but sadly it's all in the past

You contradict yourself. One second you say we should be proud of 2004-11 and next minute say with today's admin we'd win 4 flags. That is nothing to be proud of. Makes it even more galling how our pathetic admin most likely stuffed us.
