Best ever saints quarter of football

Post: # 1435403Post bbm »

My favorite-ess v saints mid 80's. We are 48 points down at 3/4time against the top team. We play grant and someone who are half forwards running off the back flank at the centre bounce. We win clearance after clearance and move it to plugger with great efficiency. The goals start accumulating, Moorabbin becomes electric like only it can. Could it be true can we overrun them in one of the most sensational comebacks of all time. We kick 8 straight in 13 mins of football. We are level - the game becomes an epic battle as the sainters are alive with belief against a team who are now shocked and in awe. The ball goes into the dons forward line and van der Haar takes a mark six inches off the ground running with the flight of the ball. He kicks truly and we end up losing. But that was the moment I realized that we could be completive after years of misery. The feeling was amazing and it's been a much better ride ever since

Didn't rate that last quarter against Swans where Lockett went mad?

1992 round 4 at Moorabbin for mine. Playing the reigning premiers, looking at going 1-3 if we lost,we came out and played a ridiculous opening quarter,8.3-1.0 for memory. We needed that start, the hawks came back within 3 points in the dying stages of the game before Plugger sealed it sending Linton street into chaos

Round 14 2009 Last quarter. If he hadn't already Lenny Hayes went from a star player that everyone thought was a very good player to the top of the tree in a midfield sense, when he took on a Geelong midfield boasting multiple all Australians, brownlows, premiership....... and Won!

Final Quarter - Us vs North 97 Prelim - without doubt.

And anyone under 50 who says any different wasn't there.

Second quarter of 1991 Elimination final stands out in my memory. Think Plugger kicked 5 or 6 for the quarter, most of them on the end of lace out Winmar and Harvey passes.

Was St Kildas first final since 1973 which added to the excitement, unfortunately lost in one of the great finals games.

This was in 1987. Plugger kicked 9 and Nicky took the Mark of the Century in it

The last quarter 0f the 1966 GF was the best result but I agree with Stephen Theodore - I think the second quarter of the 1991 final was the best quarter of football I have seen from the Saints even though the final result was wretched.

3rd quarter 2010 Prelim was pretty special.

A seven goal to one quarter after being a goal down at half time.

I had tears in my eyes with a few minutes to go. Burkey and the Cookiemonster and that Mc Kernan tackle were amazing. It was like it was read from a script.

One of my favourite quarters was a first quarter against Adelaide at Moorabbin around May of the 1991 season. It was the comeback game for both Plugger and Nicky. One of the first plays of the game was a perfect pass from Nicky to Plugger to set up the first goal of the match. Plugger had 10 goals at half-time and we ended up obliterating the Crows by over 20 goals. It really felt like we made a statement to the league that day that we were a genuine contender. The first time in my lifetime that St Kilda was becoming a powerhouse club.

Was that game in 1987? I think Nicky plucked an awesome mark in that one over Simon Madden. Yes, a ripping final quarter of football from our boys. I agree, that match did feel like a bit of a turning point for the club. Kevin Sheedy said in his post-match presser that Plugger Lockett was the best full forward he had seen.

Also, final quarter of the drawn 2010 GF was remarkable. Still get goosebumps recalling BJ's Jesaulenko-esque grab and Lenny's incredible endevours to get us up and then take the Norm Smith. It just makes me sick to the stomach that that guy will never play in a premiership team. Absolute horseshit

Agreed bro. Oh, and that 1991 game? The first kick of the game was Banger to Plugger for the first of 12. Most enjoyable.

Well it was not the second one of today's NAB challenge match.

For atmosphere the last of the 97 preliminary final, best played first against Hawthorn at Moorabbin in 1992 .

Some good nominations above.

But technically the answer is 73 points.
Our highest ever score in any quarter.

2nd quarter Round 10 2004 vs Caaarlton at Docklands
12.1 73 to 2.1 13
On our way to our second highest ever score (31.10 196) in our biggest ever win over Carlton (108 points).
What an enjoyable win that was against the Scumbags of the competition.
Only sour note was G-train not getting to 10 goals and the win was the last of the glorious 10 in a row 2004 Dreamtime.

They were separate games. We kicked eight in 11 minutes against the drug cheats when they were at the height of their powers in 1985. The game where Winmar took one of the great marks was in 87.

Still waiting for closure ... if you get my drift.

I don't know, i would guess the last quarter of the 66 GF, what i do know is you won't see a best quarter this year.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

The other "mathematical" way of looking at the question is what is the greatest incremental margin in a quarter?

3rd best quarter margin = 60
E.g. in the above example we outscored Caaaaaarlscum by 60 points.

But there are two better examples

2nd best margin = 68
1963 R14 Junction Oval vs Fitzroy 4th quarter 10.8 68 vs 0.0 0

But the winner is margin = 69
1956 R12 Junction Oval vs North 4th quarter 11.4 70 vs 0.1 1

Agreed it wasn't 1987. We were in that game all day and got overrun at the death. IIRC, the 80's comeback game saw us cut a 45 point deficit to just 3 in an 11 minute burst in the last quarter. Terry Smith gave a dubious free kick, from which they goaled, and subsequently hung on. I'll never forget a supporter getting into his face and screaming at Terry Smith as he came off at the end, "you're a f*cking disgrace Smith." (Please don't ban me or warn me for swearing. It is factual reporting!)

Yes, unforgettable day. For my girlfriend at the time, it was the first footy match she'd attended. She didn't care for football before, but was sold after that experience.
