Fear is the only emotion that can be taught
Based on our past 9 games I've come to the conclusion that fear is a common attribute we possess as St Kilda supporters. And from what I understand fear is the only emotion that can be taught. This means that most of us St Kilda supporters have had this basic emotion instilled in us from previous generations. What I want to know is how can the St Kilda football club turn this debilitating culture around.
Theories?

Fear is innate and exists to keep us safe from harm.
Funny thing is, being St Kilda supporters, fear should have kept us away from footy, yet for some reason we keep returning for more of it.
Can you name something else in the world you're afraid of, something you know is going to cause you pain, yet you continue to expose yourself to it?

Firstly: You're confusing fear with insanity (doing the same thing over and over again... and expecting a different result).OLB wrote:Fear is innate and exists to keep us safe from harm.

Secondly: Marriage
Hotel De Los Muertos: Your room is ready... Care to step inside?
Firstly, do you not fear the inevitable heartbreak which is associated with September? Knowing the way you're going to be feeling after coming so close, yet again, only to taste bitter, agonising defeat, yet again? It's painful.
I've been a St Kilda supporter for around 20 years and the overwhelming emotion I will experience if we win a flag, more than jubilation, more than anything else, is relief.
I will be glad it's all over.
And secondly, ROFL.

If there is one thing I will take from Grant Thomas and Rod Buttress, it is this.
Culture is not endemic. It can be changed. It is what you want it to be. That is, of course, if you are strong enough.
It's a principle that has stuck true with our football club. We've missed the finals once since missing out in 2003. We need to take the final steps and I believe there is an underlying belief now that failure is not tolerated at St Kilda.
Sure, there has been no flags. But winning is the only approach and I think most supportrs who get footy understand this. There cannot be fear - I've got no time for fear and neither should our players. What is there to fear? Failure?
Well, failure is a waste of time, so don't think about it. Success is not a waste of time. Think about that - and how you're going to make success happen.
Creating winning structures and industry-leading performance as the norm; not a far-fetched ideal.
The various emotions that surround "culture" and the like are irrelevant. Create a winning culture. Chose your destiny. Own it.
Don't believe it can be done? Reckon it can't be changed?
Bull****.
Ask this bloke.
And this bloke.
And this bloke.
They took supposed 'loser' cultures and created winners. There was no fear. Only a hunger - an insatiable one - to win.
Fear? Fear is for wimps. Besides, the only thing worth fearing is...fear itself.
So **** fear. Toss it out with choking. We don't need it. Unless, of course, we choose to be a substandard club, as we have chosen to be for so long.

Firstly and secondly... you learn to tune out and not let it affect you.OLB wrote:Firstly, do you not fear the inevitable heartbreak which is associated with September? Seriously though, fear is really centred on ignorance and a lack of informarion. People fear what they don't know. Once you understand something, you're no longer afraid (except for skydiving).
Having said that, I am fully aware of what can happen so I'm not afraid.
TIP: After 40 years as a supporter, I've realized that it's not worth worrying over things you cannot control. And I no longer do.

Yeah - nothing to fear but fear itself ....
And Lethal did it to two "cultures" .... it is about our time.
Let's take this opportunity and strangle every ounce of energy out of it.
Like strangling a CAT!
Go Sanits!

Lance or James??
There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. On several levels.

Re: Fear is the only emotion that can be taught
I think we should add 'desperate' to the list. The emotions of desperation and fear are what st kilda people feel most.saintly wrote:ype it will do for me as well ... for a start.bigcarl wrote:well, one will do me for a start.

All came ahead when the Rod B and Grant T fall out happened..
Seriously that's where the current board is kicking ass in the right way. A low key professional approach. Attracting corp support(St George a good example) while feeding our football dept.
Finally things working in harmony with on field and off field.. A good operation beats fear and uncertainty in uncertain times.. Just ask any good business at the moment..
