St Kilda vows to cure interstate record
Mark Stevens | April 03, 2009 12:00am

NEAR enough is no longer good enough as St Kilda tonight embarks on a mission to improve its horror record in Adelaide.
The Saints have won only four games in 18 years at AAMI Stadium - the least of any club.

Despite an emotional qualifying-final win against the Crows in 2005, the Saints have saluted in only two of their past 12 at the ground. It mirrors a poor 28 per cent strike rate at all interstate venues since the start of 2002.

But star midfielder Brendon Goddard said the days of accepting "honourable losses" on the road were over.

"It's easy to go interstate and lose. Lose and lose well," Goddard said.

"Have a close loss, an honourable loss, and accept that. I guess we were in that frame of mind early in my career."

But Goddard said the Saints had the maturity to not use travel as an excuse.

"No loss is acceptable, no matter who it is against and where it is."

"You soon realise to be a great team you need to win interstate," Goddard said.

He said the Adelaide clash was a chance to make a statement.

"It is a chance within the group to gain confidence - go interstate and have another win," Goddard said.

"We just want to get off to a good start. In previous years we haven't started too well. We might have won Round 1, but the first 10 games have not been so good.

"We need to set a bit of a tone and an example for the rest of the year."

St Kilda's travel sickness was a worry for former coach Grant Thomas. He said in 2007 that he wanted to drop Stephen Milne from the 2005 qualifying final the week after kicking 11 goals because of his record on the road.

Thomas was over-ruled. Milne's record interstate has since improved.

While in general our interstate record is poor and AAMI's overall may not look happy it's interesting to note that the Saints have won their last 2 encounters with the Crows at AAMI stadium, and their last lost to the Crows at AAMI was in 2003.

If we look at our record v the Crows since/during the streak, it's pretty good:

They beat us in R9 2005 and R12 2006, both times at Testra Dome, but we've beat them 5 times during that stretch, including 2 games at AAMI: R4 2004 and the QF in 2005.

Take for what it's worth, which isn't very much.

Past performance counts for nothing.
Todays performance counts for 4 points.

win on the road and the confidence within the group will increase. Travelling as a group iinto enemy territory opens up the chance to build on TEAM things.

What I want to see is tackles, hard ball gets, shepards and quick decision making.

No reason why we can't bring back the points and go into the next 2 homes games on a high.

My heart hopes you are right, but my wallet receives a boost if the Crows win.

As BAM points out, we haven't lost to the Crows in Adelaide since 2003, and we're going for a hattrick of wins over there.

Our bad record over there stems pretty much from our inability to defeat Port Adelaide and some poor performances from 1992-2003 against the Crows.

Though we did defeat them over there in 1991 when Locket kicked his 100th.

Not a great result but an amazing game of the highest quality.

And it was 2004 for the record.

Fact - Adelaide Crows always a hard team to beat - very well drilled team.

Fact - I hate Crows more than any other team.

Fact - our recent record against them has been ok. We are definately a chance tonight.

I hate saying this so early in the season - but beating the Crows at home after the form they showed last week against Collingwood would be a very good sign for the rest of the year.
