Gold Coast to target Riewoldt

Post: # 716490Post saintwill66 »

From today's Realfooty.com:

"St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt remains the Gold Coast's dream inaugural skipper now it is officially an AFL club, not just an ambitious concept."

This will send all of this forum's Roo-lovers into a frenzy of sweat and fury, and just to show that I don't mind getting more hate-mail (my earlier post was "Riewoldt to CHB" - the "stupidest post ever"!!) I would like to pour a little more fuel on this fire.

There is little doubt that Nick Riewoldt will become the franchise player for the new Gold Coast team - forget his protestations and proclamations from our Club that Riewoldt is a "Saint for Life". The AFL needs Riewoldt on the Gold Coast and will do whatever it takes to get him there. Make no mistake, Riewoldt on the Gold Coast will be bigger than Ben Hur, he will be marketed as a local hero, a home-grown one at that who will ensure the new team will receive mass-market publicity both at home and in the AFL states.

The upside for St Kilda is that they stand to make a very tidy profit from any deal engineered by the AFL - rest assured that there will be considerable "under the table" incentives offered by the AFL to the Saints to smooth the way.

I am totally in favour of this proposal because unlike a vast majority of supporters I don't rate Riewoldt in the top 10 in the AFL, and consider that his greatest legacy to the Saints may well be what we can get for him to move north.

I like to think that Riewoldt will remain a saint for the rest of his playing days but the GC team will be desperate to ensure him and the Saints can't compete with what will be thrown his way.

I believe the only way we will ensure his loyalty is if we win a premiership this year or next. I doubt he will be willing to leave if he has captained a squad capable of that- afterall, why deliberately put yourself at the bottom of the ladder with a team struggling their way into the competition after tasting success.

Fair enough.

On the other hand Roo has won 4 out of our last 5 B&Fs during one of the most successful periods in the Saints history. With a premiership he may well go down as our greatest.

I would prefer going for the premiership now to draft picks for the future(none of the drafts are going to be as good as Roo anyway) .

He was born in Tasmania and moved to Qld when he was 9 years old.
We drafted him at age 18 and he then moved to Melbourne.
Given that he will have been in Melbourne for 10 years by the end of 2010 (when his current cosntract runs out) he will in fact have lived longer in Melbourne than anywhere else.

What makes him a Banana-Bender?
If anything he has more family in Tasmania than in Qld and given that his parents have plans on selling up and moving the family to Melbourne, I might humbly suggest that there is the appearance of moving away from Qld rather than desparately trying to get back there.

I wouldn't worry at all. The Club will make his management the offer they feel they can and if it's not enough then he can decide to go wherever he wants to (even Qld). This same scenario happens every time his contract is up for renewal.

By then he will be 28.
Goldcoast will have a heap of kids.
Will be looking for a leader.
Riewoldt would be perfect for them.
So they might be prepared to offer one of their (many) high picks for him.

I can't believe I am saying this because I love the man.
But if you could swap a 28 year old Riewoldt for a number 1 draft pick you would be stupid not to do so.

Obviously they wont offer pick 1.
But what about pick 3 or pick 5.

At what point would it make sense to do a deal that could be Win - Win ?

IMO it would be stupid. You must look at our list. In 3 years time we are still premiership contenders. In 7 years no. Better to max when its your time and bottom out when its not IMO the way the AFL drafts work.

I would like to put on record I can't believe how many people on here (over several posts now and last year), are even entertaining the thought of trading Roo.

Roo is unlike, say, Plugger.......both freakish players, but unlike Plugger, Roo, as a person is a true leader and the face of our club.

Harvs jointly held that mantle up until this year, but now it's all about Roo as our centrepiece.....HE is the one the kids are looking up to as the "God", so to speak.....every club needs their icon.

"Trade" your icon player at your peril.

Sheesh.....is 28 years over the hill for a champion?

I think not.

Roo could well have 3 to 5 years of top class footy left in him from 2011 onwards.

They can want him all they like, he may suit them down to a tee, but the club sure as hell won't let him go, and from all indications, HE doesn't want to go. So...how's it gonna happen? Granted, circumstances change, so it's a chance, but I'd have to say it's a bloody slim chance at best.

Plenty of clubs wanted Harv's too remember. As for ol' chestnuts like Plugger, Hall and Everitt, they (of course) wanted to go, which made the whole process light years easier.

I agree with your signature Wayno.... But could we not say the same for a 28 yo...?? So I guess we should trade him shouldnt we...

But will it win them a flag?

Frankly, I reckon we cross the bridge when we get there.

I rember the famous words from my grandfather... "what bus?".

Seriously: Worry is the interest you pay in advance for problems which may never eventuate.

My personal view is that Roo will stay, and people underestimate his values system at their own peril.

Does anyone seriously reckon he hasn't already had million dollar offers from other clubs?

Idiot quote number 1:

You people need to stop doing whatever you have been doing lately, because its affected your ability to reason.

To claim Roo is not an elite player, or that at 28 he would be losing his value is incredibly stupid.

I said this elsewhere:

One:

- What guarantee is there that top ten draft picks will turn into superstars (like Roo)? There are many top 10 picks that have turned out to be average players, or constantly struck down with injuries & never develop into anything special.

Two:

- Even if we do something this stupid, and even if the picks turn out to be very good players, it would take at least 4 to 5 years before they reach their full potential & the club gets the benefit. You want to blow another 4 or 5 years?

Finally:

- Where is it written in law that Roo needs to go to the gold coast? Too many supporters think we are always doomed to lose our good players to bigger/richer clubs. Back in 2003 many thought we would lose at least two of Dal, Roo, Kosi, Ball, BJ, etc, because the powerful clubs would offer them big contracts and they would go.....none of that happend.

Good call Kaos.

X and Kosi come to mind when I read your point "one" about top 10 draft picks.

Add to that caydan betham (9), fiora (originally 3), Barry Brooks (traded pick 6)....that's just at our club, there are many examples across all clubs....

Absolutely so let's shorten the odds ....say Riewoldt for picks 1 to 5. That should do it. Surely we can find a gem with the first 5 draft picks - how desperate do they want him? Make us an offer we can't refuse.

Bollocks.

Who's going to be in draft? JUst for starters.

Next: Where we will be placed in 2 years from now?

If we're still in the hunt, why would you let him go?

Not sure what chrystal ball you're using to make these calls, PJ.

Gold Coast to Target......hmmm perhaps it's some kind of celebrity fun run Roo's involved in. I'm all for charity especially for organisations that have no concept of reality.
